Poll: Obama's Approval Rating Jumps 6 Percent

NEW YORK — President Barack Obama's approval ratings are starting to rise after declining ever since his inauguration, new poll figures show as the country's mood begins to brighten. But concerns about the economy, health care and war persist, and support for the war in Afghanistan is falling.

An Associated Press-GfK poll says 56 percent of those surveyed in the past week approve of Obama's job performance, up from 50 percent in September. It's the first time since he took office in January that his rating has gone up.

People also feel better about his handling of the economy and his proposed health care overhaul.

But not about the war.

Support for the war in Afghanistan has declined, the poll said Tuesday. And approval of Obama's handling of it is holding steady – in contrast to his gains in other areas – as he considers a big troop increase there. Poll respondents narrowly oppose the increase.

Overall, 39 percent said they disapproved of Obama's performance in office, down from 49 percent last month.

While a majority of those surveyed remain pessimistic about the direction of the country, that number has begun to improve, too. The poll found 41 percent now believe the U.S. is headed in the right direction, compared with 37 percent in September.

But a large majority of respondents said they remain very concerned about most of the major issues facing the country. The economy was the biggest concern, with 88 percent saying they consider it extremely or very important, followed by unemployment, health care, terrorism, the budget deficit, taxes and the war in Afghanistan.

The increase in Obama's job approval rating was driven by a more positive view of his handling of nearly all of those issues.

Fifty percent of those surveyed said they approved of the president's handling of the economy, up from 44 percent in September. And 48 percent said they approved of his handling of health care, up six points and about equal to the 47 percent who said they disapproved. Obama has made health care the signature domestic issue of his presidency.

Terence Glass, a 45-year-old Milwaukee resident studying to be a teacher, said he was pleased with Obama's handling of health care and the economy, especially his decision to provide federal help to the ailing auto industry.

"We have to look at what was going on before he got in his office. The country was in pretty bad shape," Glass, a Democrat said, adding that since Obama had become president, "I look at it now and I think it's doing a little better."

The only measure that remained unchanged from September was Obama's handling of the war in Afghanistan. Forty-six percent said they approved of his handling of the conflict, while 41 percent disapproved.

Indeed, the poll found a drop in overall support for the 8-year-old war. Forty percent said they favored it, down four points from July, while 57 percent said they were opposed. Some 46 percent favor sending more U.S. troops there, while 50 percent oppose a troop increase, a major decision Obama is weighing.

Obama boosted troop levels in Afghanistan last spring by about 21,000. He and his national security team are now reviewing a warning by Gen. Stanley McChrystal, commander of U.S. forces in that country, that the war will be lost without another big increase.

Glenda Holton, 53, a retired Army sergeant from Dublin, Ga., said she strongly disapproved of Obama's performance in office – and opposed a troop increase.

"I don't feel like they need to have any of them over there," she said about U.S. troops in Afghanistan. "Because it's not doing any good, it's escalating and there hasn't been any improvement."

Holton, who did not vote for Obama in the general election and considers herself an independent, added, "It's not our fight over there."

To be sure, the poll found persistent and deep partisan divisions over Obama. While 88 percent of Democrats said they approved of his performance in office, just 18 percent of Republicans approved. But that GOP figure was up six points since September, when only 12 percent of Republicans said they approved.

Obama's job approval has also gone up among independents. Fifty-three percent said they approved of the president's job performance, a nine point increase since September. Even more strikingly, the percentage of independents who said they disapproved plunged 16 points, from 53 percent last month to 37 percent now.

The poll of 1,003 adults was conducted Oct. 1-5, using both landline and cell phone interviews, with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

First, most of us that voted for our president don't care about polls we at this time are concerned about our families, healthcare, jobs, treating people the way we want to be treated and that is affordable healthcare for all and an option to choose. Polls, actually mean absolutely nothing to flavor, I can recall early last year when there was a poll out stating this guy Obama cannot and will not beat Hillary we don't know much about him so she will win the presidential nomination. Well, like I said, polls don't have eye's and they don't have a wand, only the votes by the people will determine who will win those seats. That's why I love america, we can vote for whom we feel should be seated in those seats.

These polls are so flawed. Obama's approval ratings have been consistently decreasing since a month after he was put in office. The guy has a completely different agenda then what most of you think he is doing for you.

I just hope he quits focusing on implementing systems to control more of the country and starts protecting our country. In the meantime, while he is wasting time trying to get the Olympics to come to Chicago and putting in a health care system, we have REAL US armed forces dieing overseas.

Protecting our country should be priority #1. Anyone who is selfish enough to look passed that and worry about their own benefits (free health care, free stimulus checks, etc) — you have a black heart and are just leeches. Go earn your money, stop hoping the government is going to fix your problems.

Obama won because our country is driven by selfish and lazy low-income people who think the government is the answer to their problems.

Those who care about their freedom and keeping the government out of our personal lives and focused on protecting our country from terrorists vote republican. Freedom meaning, when we got to the hospital — it's not ran like the DMV (5 hour waiting lines, careless employees, etc).

In fact all the problems the president Obama faced with has noting to do with his inability to bring changes. Changes will come late but he can't create jobs that are not there because American economy has crashed when that happened the world is the causality because almost every other economy is tied to the American economy. It is difficult for America to regain the respect and the global power which once it enjoyed. George Bush sleepwalked into unwanted and stupid wars in may fronts and that has created a lot of enemies for America and some of the countries used this opportunity to strengthen politically, economically and militarily. Now America cannot and will never be able to over take those countries because most of the countries provide cheap labor for their exports. I don't think America can ever provide that cheap labor when it comes to export things goods. China and India are leading the way. Only hope is that further weakening of dollar might help American export but at the same time that also create so many other problems for America and also to the world. The world need to find a new currency or currencies to invest and to have reserves because playing with dollar is suicidal..

Other polls
Rasmussen 49% Approval
Gallup 51% Approval

Now let us look at the AP methodology
For their September poll which found that Obama had 50% approval their sample was as follows
Total Democrat: 39%
Total Republican: 33%

For this poll:
Total Democrat 43%
Total Republican 32%

Anyone with a brain can see why the president's approval rating "jumped" in this poll. Every other poll out there has shown that the gap between Dem and Rep affiliation has declined. Yet, for this poll, they sample more Dems and less Republicans. That is why there is a 6% "increase". Of course a poll that goes from a difference of 6% percentage points to one of 11% percentage points is going to show a marked increase in approval for Obama. But does anyone here, when every other poll is showing a decline, really believe that the president's approval is going to jump by six points, which is a heck of a lot, in less than a month, a month that saw an increase in unemployment as well as the Afghanistan issue brought to the fore? It is just not feasible, and the instant I saw the poll, I knew it was because they increased the sample of Dems and lowered the one for the Republicans.

People need to consider whether they're supporting a government ran health care because it benefits them or benefits the goverment. Come on people, put your selfishness aside and open your eyes. The government is not going to spend time and money of their own because they want to help people with their health care — this is about the the TRILLIONS of dollars they will receive in additional revenue as a result of a government ran health care — end of story.
12:08 AM on 10/08/2009
Why do you people latch onto one poll and ignore EVERY OTHER POLL OUT THERE SHOWING MUCH WORSE RESULTS?
12:04 AM on 10/08/2009
I hate to rain on the parade here, but when unemployment hits 10%, there isn't going to be a poll in the country that will show the president above 50%.
06:11 PM on 10/08/2009
Exactly.
12:03 AM on 10/08/2009
You have to suspend disbelief to actually believe this poll. Support for his handling of the economy increased? Really? Three days after it was announced that unemployment hit a 26 year high? As I mentioned in a previous post, the reason his numbers went up is entirely owed to the methodology used. If you look at the partisan breakdown, you will see that the percentage of Democrats sampled vs. what AP did last month changed significantly. Anyone who believes that Obama's approval ratings have increased by a huge amount in a span of four weeks, a time period in which it has been all bad news for the president, particularly on unemployment, is delusional.

This poll reminds me of the CBS poll that came out three weeks ago, in which Obama's approval rating was put at 56% also. In that poll they sampled 22% Republican and 37% Democrat, and they could still only come up with a 56% approval rating. As Real Clear Politics mockingly noted, that partisan breakdown hasn't existed in this country since 1936.

All one need to do is examine mulititudes of other polls that have been released in the same time period. This poll is an outlier. But of course, the left is extremely fond of cherry-picking polls, so the less favorable ones will be avoided. Heck, even the Daily Kos only has him at 53%.

Not surprisingly, the entirej ump, as evidenced by the poll methodology, comes from AP sampling a lot more Dems than they did las time, and less Republicans. Wow, what a surprise. Dems think Obama is doing a good job. As evidenced by every other poll, this poll is an outlier.

President Obama, is far from being like president Bush there is no comparison. President Bush, left and when he left he left us holding a bag filled with debt, a war that cost billions on top of billions, greedy banks, corporations who once was and now are overseas, companies that had been around 30 or more years gone, he started the stimulus and it stimulated only the banks & oh yea! their CEO's were at the top of the list for BIG BONUS, in which this was not stated when they were asking for the bailout, that the CEO's were going to get this money. I just wonder why? there was not an outcry from the republican party about that stimulus but oh! how they cried when President Obama, did a follow up he's gonna bankrupt the economy! hell did'nt you know we were already sinking, the american people had been crying out for a life jacket for years. Honey, the playing game of politics ain't fair but theres one thing I must say, the games are still the same, just different faces. If the rep, party had of gotten in they too people would have continued the stimulus, without a doubt.
06:34 PM on 10/08/2009
The governments ONLY job is to protect the country — not worry about greedy banks and CEO's. These are just typical democrat excuses. The difference is that Bush was actually doing his job of protecting the country while Obama is worrying about implementing systems to increase government control — this is not freedom like it should be.

Too many selfish people (many just too uneducated) drinking the kool-aid and only looking at the short-term benefits.

After reading all the positive comments on Obama I have to say my fellow democrats are as smart as their Republican counterparts. The economy is in the toilet because obama won't do anything about global free trade and his economic aid packjages like to the auto industry were for the executives, auto workers were forced to take many concessions and the car companies still said they were moving many production lines across the border.Health insurance reform is a joke,my insurance deductibles are going up $200 so lets let the corporations keep runing health insurance.Torture was moved overseas not abolished,be proud America. We still have spying on anybody in America as Obama has as little repect for our constitution as Bush.Mountain tops can still be blown up poisening water supplies and cap and trade is a former republican excuse to keep global warming going..Are 56% of Americans really braindead as this poll suggests

I agree with you that global "free" trade is the source of a lot of the job losses in the USA. But, what exactly could Obama do about it in 9 months? Any quick fix economic policy designed to pull outsourced jobs back from China, India or Southeast Asia could blow up in our faces. (Imagine if China called in all our debt.) Our best opportunity is creating new industries. Investing in research, technology development and increased education of the workforce and investments in clean energy are intended to seed this process. But they are long-term investments, not quick fixes. Guaranteed affordable health insurance would also help. Right now, the next young Bill Gates - with a startup and a great idea - will pay several fold as much to provide health care as Microsoft pays. That stacks the cards against innovative small businesses.

Headline is wrong. A jump of six points from 50 to 56 is not a six percent increase. It's a 12 percent increase. Journalists and math, same old sad story, even in the online world. :-)

Look, I could care less about a poll especially one that don't include flavor's thoughts, I voted for this intelligent man and I ain't apologizing for it. He cares about us and listens to the american people, he has stretched out his arms even to the republican party something president bush did not do often to his own party. We don't care about what polls are saying we know what we already have said, YES TO BARRACK OBAMA and NO TO THE REPUBLICANS, we are in this mess because of 8 years of drainage because they have drained the american people, we were tired of being toreup from the floorup and needing a checkup from the neckup and we wanted change even if it was 2 cents of it because the last administration left us pennieless. No, I don't care for polls every president has had their approval rating go down while in office, because we are people who can say what we like and don't like it does not mean we don't like our president, yes we should critique him he wants that but overall I think we made the right choice, no I know we did.
