GlobalPost:

NEW DELHI, India: For years, India has been trumpeting the advent of revolutionary new films that turn the cliches of Bollywood on their head; twins separated at birth, "Six Million Dollar Man"-type special effects, ludicrous fight scenes and, of course, the songs. But most of the films that the industry hailed as creative were lifted from Hollywood, like "Kaante," a 2002 rip-off of "Reservoir Dogs" that somehow managed to be utterly terrible despite copying Tarantino almost shot for shot.

*ollywood. B or a H, it's stull G. Garbage. I miss intellectual media. Even what's being churned out by the BBC is a pale parody of what they used to make. :(

That was unfair to Kaante, if for no other reason than that Ishq Samundar was the superior song IMHO

Company, made the same year, was far stronger though in all respects.

This is a true shame, cultural piracy in its highest form. If I wanted to see an American movie, I'd turn on my TV. When I watch a Bollywood movie, it's because I want to see something Indian, not this nouveau "modernized" half English garbage. Bollywood died after the 90's.

Really, I think it died before then. The early days of Hindi cinema had coherent story lines, were original, and pushed the envelope, too.

I will agree though, that part of the fun of much masala Bollywood is accepting it on its own terms, shutting off your brain for three hours and just immersing yourself in the escapism.

For better or worse globalization has put an end to purist fantasies and authentic identities.

Half-English or half-American? English (to me) implies "BBC" and they've regrettably "Americanized" themselves too, with glossy garbage. :(

Cultural piracy indeed.
