What's Your Reaction?

Jude Law's 'Hamlet' opened on Broadway Tuesday night, and the new father is killing it in the title role. Will Jude become the second Hamlet (after Ralph Fiennes in 1995) to win a tony? Here are some pics from the performance and the red carpet. Scroll down for links to a few rave reviews of the play.

In related news, Mr. Law impregnated three women during intermission.

My father-in-law was a well known film critic for many years for a national magazine, and I never once witnessed him raving.

When will the words "critic" and "rave" finally be torn apart? It is so very tiresome.

Maybe they were talking about the reviews he recieved in London. He did get RAVE reviews in London and several Brit friends who saw this, also raved.

The headline writer here has obviously never read an actual "rave" review. This production did not receive any.

Actually, the reviews are decidedly mixed. Among the three reviews linked above, the Ben Brantley one hardly qualifies as a rave.

Art, like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To say he got rave reviews completely dismisses the subjectivity of each observer's experience. The truth is, I don't read reviews. I make up my mind for myself. And having seen Jude on Charlie Rose last week and seen clips of this modern minimalist interpretation makes me wish I could be in NYC to see this play.

It's just too bad that this performance wont ever likely be released on DVD because the production values alone make it worth at least a look-see

Yea too bad that NONE of the photos showed anything about the production. Who cares about Westwick's shoes.

There's no telling how he did without seeing it, really. Broadway critics have had their brains turned to mush from a decade of watching insufferable treacle produced to pull in tourists. They can no longer discern a silk purse from a sow's ear. Plus they're used to all the broadway actors being mic'd so their ears aren't attuned to actual stage actor 'declaiming'. Maybe the performance was great, maybe it was awful, but I wouldn't trust a NY theater critic to walk my dog for me.

I saw it and I think the NYT review is accurate. He was mainly "Hamlet on Red Bull". Not bad- respectable enough - but without much of the initial introspection that the role requires, and seemingly feeling that every phrase deserves a gesture. But his star power is getting a lot of people in to see some Shakespeare (probably mostly the young) who might be getting their first exposure to it and the play with this production, so I think it's a good thing.

Thank you, and I agree - getting more young people to experience Willy is a good thing. The psychological dilemmas of humans never really change, and once the syntax is locked onto, most of his plays really pull the audience along. I saw an off B prod of Coriolanus a few years back, and I had never heard or read it - but the conflicts and drama seemed timeless.

Well, I hope to work to work he goes and this show runs for years and years, and where he is The King And I' of this play on Broadway. Another film version with he as the star wouldn't hurt either.

The NY Times and the Washington Post panned Law's performance and it has received mixed reviews at best. Was the Huff Post headline written by Mr. Law's agent?

It's true. All of the reviews I have read thus far have been terrible. I am glad to hear something positive as I am a fan of JL's.
