New York Times:

Are high heels all about sexual advantage, since they elongate and exaggerate the female form? Or is there another explanation? What liberates women and what shackles them, when it comes to shoes?

It is a myth that All Women Love Shoes Like These. Pushed on us by the fashion and retail industries. Go to any crowded city, (perhaps outside of LA and NY) and just look at what real women are wearing, and the majority, by far are not in towering heels. Check out the clearance racks at a store like Macy's, you will see it filled with skyscraper heels that no one really wants. Yes, high heels can be fun, dressing up and for a few hours at a time. Even young fashion mavens will choose a flat cool gladiator sandal over those screaming high heels.
What is a challenge for designers is to come up with a flattering, stylish, comfortably flat or lower heeled shoe for everyday wear. For years, in the eighties, I wore a black mans oxford, because I couldn't find anything similar in womans, and I used to get tons of props and compliments on my footwear.

What is the proof that women love these shoes. No one I know or hang around wear this type of shoe. Even high heals are not as popular as once thought. The reason the designers are opting for taller shoes is the idea that they can attract a woman's attention. Those don't. If women have to compete in the world of work, to compete, she has to be able to walk. They don't hire crippled folk often. Nether do they hire people who are slowed down because they are foolish enough to wear shoes that slow them down.

My wife has worn only high heels since she was a teenager. I try to get her to buy flats, at least some sports shoes for walks in the woods. No, she will not consider anything with a heel less than 3". She swears they are comfortable to her, and they must be. I've seen her walk 12 kilometers in a day in heels, then put on even higher ones to go out to dance.

She has likely shortened the muscles in her calves by doing this and her feet will not look very good as she gets older. They're her feet though, so her choice :)

shotened the musles for sure, that's why flats are uncomfortable. seeing as how she's in her 50s I think her feet as as they will be, which is very nice.

Uh, they don't. MEN just think women love shoes like these, because men apparently love shoes like these. But it would be pretty funny if neither loved shoes like these, but each thought the other did.

Nothing liberating about inability to actually walk with confidence and purpose in those kind of shoes.

I love *some* heels, but only if they fit (read: only if they do not hurt), and only if I can walk at least a couple of blocks in them. Otherwise, forget it--and I only wear them once or twice a week, otherwise it's pumps or flats on workdays, flats or sandals on the weekend. So just because some women like to wear heels sometimes does not mean we are all brainless masochists.
(And as for the heels in the photo above--ick!)

Why does Huffpost love to put idiotic headlines on some stories?
