Prospective buyers of The Boston Globe faced a Friday deadline for submitting firm bids, but it remained unclear what would happen next -- or even whether The New York Times Company would go ahead with a sale.
Bids were expected from two contenders that had made preliminary offers: a group of local investors led by Stephen E. Taylor, a former Globe executive whose family owned the paper until 1993, and Platinum Equity, a private equity firm based in Beverly Hills that recently bought The San Diego Union-Tribune.
