DALLAS — The Dallas Police Department is investigating if more than 2,000 family violence cases stored in the garage of one of its 35-year veterans were handled properly and filed with the district attorney's office.

Detective Mickey East says he took the documents home to organize them and put files together. He has entered only about 10 of his cases into the family violence unit database since 2005.

Officials are reviewing department policies to determine which rules he violated.

Police say it could take months to sort through the files.

Dallas County First District Attorney Terri Moore says prosecutors will wait until the police department complete its internal review before deciding how to proceed.

Man, this is really scary. Like someone mentioned "who's investigating the investigators?". We need some follow up or this sad incident or it will be occurring more often.

My question is...in how many cases was a woman killed by a violent spouse when their complaints were in this guy's garage? He ought to be held accountable for every case in which that occurs.

The police are nothing more than a tool for the rich and powerful to maintain the status quo.

Most likely this guy is ADD and really needed a secretary to deal with paperwork, organization, filing and getting those tedious aspects of the job done. he really probably should have chosen another profession.

I wonder how many of those cases involved police officer's beating up on their wives and kids?

A valid point, and the first one that popped into my head: Who's he protecting?
But this is Texas we're talking about... They all try to protect each other, until the house of cards falls apart... then the feeding frenzy begins

Removal of state property should be rewarded with a firing. That's usually the law whether you are wearing a badge or not. Have other cases suffered as a result of these being at this fools home. Should a storm have destroyed them, then what...cover up?

in the military it's called dereliction of duty and you can be jailed for that

Maybe the guy didn't enter the cases into the database, in collusion with others he worked with, in order to "save the department time" to work on cases they thought were more important?

They can start by firing the guy.

As usual, Texas is a joke.

They shouldn't be too hard on the guy. There are probably just so many cases of family violence in TX that he couldn't keep up with entering them all.
