Anita Dunn: Fox News An Outlet For GOP Propaganda

First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 03:20 PM ET

Anita Dunn

The White House's communications staff announced this week that it was charting out a new, more aggressive strategy this past week, defined largely by a pledge to push back hard against news stories that are either inaccurate or unflattering.

On Sunday, the strategy was on full display as communications director Anita Dunn gave a lengthy and brutal denunciation of Fox News, calling the cable outlet a vehicle for Republican Party propaganda and an ideological opponent of the president.

Here are just a few choice nuggets from Dunn's appearance on CNN's Reliable Sources

"If we went back a year ago to the fall of 2008, to the campaign, that was a time this country was in two wars that we had a financial collapse probably more significant than any financial collapse since the Great Depression. If you were a Fox News viewer in the fall election what you would have seen were that the biggest stories and the biggest threats facing America were a guy named Bill Ayers and a something called ACORN."
"The reality of it is that Fox News often operates almost as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party. And it is not ideological... what I think is fair to say about Fox, and the way we view it, is that it is more of a wing of the Republican Party."
"Obviously [the President] will go on Fox because he engages with ideological opponents. He has done that before and he will do it again... when he goes on Fox he understands he is not going on it as a news network at this point. He is going on it to debate the opposition."
"[Fox is] widely viewed as a part of the Republican Party: take their talking points and put them on the air, take their opposition research and put it on the air. And that's fine. But let's not pretend they're a news organization like CNN is."

Dunn's remarks are notably blunt and direct, especially from a White House that has received a large amount of flattering coverage and, when it doesn't, usually airs its grievances in private. They also are a bit misleading, as both the president's staff and its campaign arms at the DNC have cultivated favored members of the media of their own to which they routinely feed access and opposition research. It's a fact of politics and press, regardless of which party is in power.

In response, Senior Vice President of News for FOX News Michael Clemente defended the network in the following statement to CNN's Reliable Sources:

An increasing number of viewers are relying on FOX News for both news and opinion. And the average news consumer can certainly distinguish between the A section of the newspaper and the editorial page, which is what our programming represents. So, with all due respect to anyone who still might be confused about the difference between news reporting and vibrant opinion, my suggestion would be to talk about the stories and the facts rather than attack the messenger...which over time, has never worked.

All told, the Obama administration clearly is pursuing a strategy of direct engagement when it comes to the fourth estate - one in which even the most trivial of unflattering stores do not go unanswered. Earlier in the week, Dunn told Time Magazine that she and her team were no longer going to "just sit back and defend ourselves, because [conservative media] will say anything. They will take any small thing and distort it."

The next day, the DNC ripped apart a short but rather absurd article in Politico that revealed Obama's presidential campaign had received $34,000 from defenders of troubled filmmaker Roman Polanski.

I find it particularly interesting that their main concern is to not air any information that could be "unflattering" to the white house, and if that is the biggest problem people like Dunn have with news sources like Fox, it makes me wonder if the freedom of press is even part of our bill of rights. Whether or not you choose Fox as a top source of news, they have still established credibility through the years and are the choice news source for many people. In order for America to remain a land of liberty and equality, officials cannot pick and choose what rights people can still retain in order to make themselves look good. I think it is ridiculous that people are targeting one news source because they don't agree with its reports, even if they are true. Yes they have bias, but so do countless other news sources. You can't condemn another source for having bias, when the source you support has equally biased report.

First, you are deluded (like millions of others) if you truly believe FOX is a "news" source. It is an opinion source. And Second, just so you, and all the others out there, who would criticize Obama for his stance, know--he has invited and given interviews to real Right wing writers and news people. George W. Bush NEVER admitted MSNBC's reporters for an interview, so it is the usual hypocrisy of the right--again! Get all the facts--you will NOT get them at FOX , precisely because it is NOT a real news channel.
Howard Kurtz of the Washington Post wrote:
"Obama's a man who has demonstrated he is interested in hearing other views," said syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer, citing his post-election graciousness toward John McCain. "I guess he wanted to continue that -- as well as co-opting the vast right-wing conspiracy."

"Besides Krauthammer and Kudlow, Will's guests were Weekly Standard Editor Bill Kristol, New York Times columnist David Brooks, Wall Street Journal Editorial Page Editor Paul Gigot, Journal columnist Peggy Noonan and Fox News commentator Michael Barone."

You need to watch and listen to numerous sources and draw your own conclusions.

Now we have Anita Dunn, who sings the praises of the great philosopher Mao Tse-tung, in the White House. I didn't think the government would have a pay czar taking salaries back from people he doesn't approve of. But thats the Obama administration.

Time Magazine has listed Chairman Mao as one of the 100 most important people of the 20th century.

Why would anyone be a fan of Chairman Mao?

One of Chairman Mao's quotes...
[quote]War can only be abolished through war, and in order to get rid of the gun it is necessary to take up the gun.[/quote]

In this age, where much improvement is needed in the relationship between the U.S. and middle eastern countries... Why are people are still looking to Chairman Mao for answers?

Look at Chairman Mao's accomplishments...

Doesn't anyone remember the protests at Beijing's Tiananmen Square on June 5, 1989?

Look at all of the people that he misled. Do your own research. Were people really better off under Chairman Mao's leadership?

It could be argued that Chairman Mao was the greatest failure of the 20th century. If not, then it could be easily argued that he was the greatest mass-murderer... more so than Hitler... more so than Stalin.

How come the progressives here distrust Beck's wild eyed distortions on everything EXCEPT his lies about Mao and communism? Set aside Dunn for a minute, Mao DID NOT kill millions. Watch this video with Raymond Lotta where he refutes one of these many distortions (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ms99-3Nj81I)

Even the Wall Street Journal had to admit healthcare in China under Mao made "significant public-health strides."

[And for those who believe in critical thinking Lotta is on a campus speaking tour, at NYU monday, oct 26, "everything you've been told about communism is wrong, capitalism is a failure, revolution is the solution" - you should come hear him and bring your hardest questions].

You are truly blind!!! You even go as far as to try to change history in the process, I did not know that was possible. Just remember that "those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it." It looks like America is headed in the direction China did. They will take away your freedom of speech, volunteering will turn into forced labor, you will have government involvement in every aspect of your life. It is so easy to love Communism from the perspective of a liberal who has been brain-washed by his/her communist professors to think that Communism is the ideal. You have to experience Communism to know that there is nothing great about it. The idea of equality does not work. You basically have a few elite government officials living the life and everyone else is equal ... only the equal part applies to equaly poor. The government controls the media, healthcare, jobs, property. You can not leave the system and move elsewhere without giving everything to the state, you have no personal property and no wealth creation. Life is dull and uninteresting. The government uses the media to brain-wash everyone and you have no form of entertainment. Why do you think millions of Cubans over the years since the famous Castro revolution continue to throw themselves and their children to the mercy of a poorly made raft that may or may not reach shore in a free country like this one?
03:34 PM on 10/16/2009
This is coming from an American that holds Mao Tse Tung as one of her favorite political philosophers? How does someone like this have America's best interest at heart? Please, those of you in the media who know this is wrong, stand up for this country for your children's sake!

Isn't there anyone left in America that has a problem with this??

If Fox News is a vehicle for the Republican Party’s propaganda and their ideological opposition to the President, then so be it. In 1776, We the People of the United States went to war against the British rule because of taxation without representation and tyranny. It is apparent that our country has gone full circle again because of the Democratic Party pushing a Marxist agenda. Our voices are not heard anymore. In a Representative Republic the majority should rule. Fifty-six percent of Americans do not want this Healthcare Bill passed. From a quote by Thomas Jefferson, “From time to time the Tree of Liberty must be watered with the blood of the tyrants as well as the blood of patriots”, it appears to be time for a modern day revolution against tyranny in this country. God Bless America.

Maybe it was not a great strategy, but some rules should apply, to not let cable stations call themselves NEWS if all they are doing is hype and propaganda. I find it shameless how Fox has been ranting this whole past year with vicious lies about everything the president in doing...come on!!!. Does he ever get credit when he does something good? NO. not by FOX. very biist indeed.

White House Communications Director Anita Dunn recently spoke to a high school group and admitted that two of the people she most turns to are Mao Tse-Tung and Mother Teresa! Does this revelation really surprise you? Let's see now, Bill Ayers, Rev. Wright, Mao Tse-Tung, and now Anita Dunn, they all seem to fit Obama's plan to revolutionize the U.S.
10:48 AM on 10/15/2009
Anita Dunn is an admitted Communist who obviously isn't capable of either ignoring or deflecting an opposing viewpoint. Communism as an ideology is in direct contradiction to the individual's right to express an opinion of dissent. Ms. Dunn apparently either struggles with the division between news and opinion, or prefers differing opinions, no matter how well-intended be left out of the equation. I have news for Ms. Dunn. This country will NOT cave in to an oppressive form of government! We won't do it for Barack Obama, we wouldn't do it for George Bush or any OTHER EMPLOYEE of WE THE PEOPLE!

Why is the Obama administration picking a fight with Fox News? MORONIC MOVE by the White House imo. First of all, in Obama's own words, Fox is a "pretty big megaphone", regularly doubling all other news outlets in viewership. To boot, a pew poll recently showed them to have the most balanced viewership, including repubs, dems, and independents. Love 'em or hate 'em, Fox is already powerful enough without further empowering them through the act of outright engagement. Why legitimize a network the White House purports as a right wing propagandist outlet by going toe to toe with them? It makes no sense. If they are indeed little more than a Republican mouthpiece, Obama wouldn't feel the need to stoop to their level. I don't get it.

"But let's not pretend they're a news organization like CNN is."

Hahahaha!

All mainstream news is misinformation and distraction from the real issues. Anyone who's paying attention will know this. Why is it her job to negate one propaganda network and promote another. This is silly. The White House has much larger, graver issues to deal with than this.

I watch FOX and CNN for about 30 minutes each day and try to find the middle ground. I rarely see these numbers from these polls on CNN.

We (The majority) don't want the health care reform
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/current_events/healthcare/september_2009/health_care_reform

We (The majority) don't think the Pres is doing a good job.

Doubt you will see those on NBC, CBS, ABC

It is odd that the parent company of NBC and MSNBC has a banner add on this site. I am sure it is just a coincidence.

Rasmussen Polls are unreliable they've been caught so many times and then when they're wrong
it tends to favor conservative positions or talking points. LOL In the world of polling and surveys they're like what Fox is to the news industry - LIARS

As Fox proved in court last year, there are no legal remedies for their lying, except to call them on it. So that is what the White House has to do.

Any body that repeats the slogan saying: FOX is the only FAIR and BALANCED news channel has already been seriously duped!

There is nothing FACTUAL, let alone Balanced, or unbiist in that clown of a show.

Beck is also a disaster that should be removed before he does more damage...by being a total goofball manufacturer of lies about the president and dems in general. Thats all he does and gets paid for, he is a totally brainless chap otherwise, that nobody would even take any notice of him. He attracts only the brainless uneducated RWNJ and by so doing,. endangers the life of the president
