WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama and his family attended Sunday services at St. John's Church, an Episcopal church on Lafayette Square just across the street from the White House.

Obama, first lady Michelle and daughters Sasha and Malia listened to a sermon about how Christianity has consequences.

Mike Angell, a seminarian of the church, told the parishioners that the consequences vary, whether it's making a hard decision at work or deciding to give more time to God.

Angell told the worshippers they don't face these consequences alone. "We are given each other as a source of boldness," he said.

The Obamas shook hands with those around them as the parishioners were told to show each other a sign of peace. The worshippers prayed for all people, including "Barack, our president, the leaders of Congress, the Supreme Court and all who are in authority."

The family took a quick ride to the services, but opted to stroll back together to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Obama, who also worshipped at the pale yellow church on Easter Sunday and on Inauguration Day, hasn't settled on a new permanent congregation for the first family since the Obamas came to Washington.

St. John's is a popular pick for presidents – both because it's near the White House and because it's familiar to the Secret Service.

A pew nine rows back from the altar carries a small brass plaque designating it as "The President's Pew." Former President George W. Bush often attended services, and church history claims that every president since James Madison, the nation's fourth chief executive, has visited.

The first service in the landmark church was held in 1816 and many former presidents have worshipped there.

As an atheist, it's good to see the Obamas going to the quasi-libber-al church of Henry the Eighth. Bishop Spong is one of my favorites. And what's the matter with this Post-Bushie wacko ? He/she/it sounds full of fear and hate, and probably armed and dangerous.

The Obamas go to church. Not a big story, but a big opportunity for people to assemble here and deliver their back-and-forth.

I did think it funny that on some threads church-going Christians are ridiculed but when it is the Obamas it is just wonderful! LOL!!! That tells you something, doesn't it? But nothing we didn't already know.

I especially liked the comment about their home church being "stolen" from them and hoping they could find one like they had planned to fly to Chicago from DC every Sunday to church. And maybe they did. You never know. They would have been praised for it! LOL!!!

By the way, Michaeleen, these people are not libs. They are 'bots. They don't know the meaning of liberal...not socially...maybe fiscally.

Who ridicules church-going Christians? No, just the hypocrites who condemn others for actions they do themselves. Get over your constant state of victimhood.

And, please tell the class again about selective outrage. Please. I want to know about exploding debt over the last eight years that you all have suddenly discovered in the last eight months. Tell us all again about naughty government contractors like ACORN and then explain your silence on Haliburton (whose subcontracting work likely lead to the death of U.S. soldiers).

Perhaps it's because you weren't instructed to be outraged by the those things until fairly recently.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:51 AM on 10/12/2009

I didn't realize ridiculing church goers was such a wide spread problem. You would think God would've kicked the crap out of the ridiculers by now. In any case, the one thing the ridiculed church goers have going for them is they have something to do Sunday morning. The ridiculers have to stay in bed, watch TV, read the papers, drink coffee, eat danish -- and of course ridicule the churchees.

There's a distinct difference between attending church for one's own personal or family-based spiritual guidance and using fundamentalist, evangelical religious dogma to reshape political policy or to tell others how to procreate, live, breath and die. If I am correct, President Obama is not beating the evangelical ReTHUG/neo-con pulpit trying to dictate to others how to live or what god to worship.

Sometimes family also have only a father or only a mother...sometimes only grandparents...sometimes 2 fathers or 2 mothers...this is ONE example of a family. You need to broaden your horizons. There are all kinds of families out there. Just because they don't have one father, one mother, and 2 children does not mean they are less of a family.

Yeah why don't they just hop on Airforce-1 and head straight to the Vatican for early morning mass? Does that make more sense to you? Do you have a good suggestion as far as a church they could attend? Maybe yours? Or did you just have a need to nitpick or tickle the keyboard?

It's so sad that the right-wingers have used this President's middle name to create division and hatred among a select few in America. So it's understandable that you don't want his middle name used. However, while a middle name does not make the man, it is a part of who he is. When those of us who support this President can accept this when we see it in print or hear it spoken without a sense of dread or apprehension we demonstrate to others that we find nothing wrong with the name “Hussein”. By doing this, we signify to them that the only thing wrong is their wrong way of thinking. We can positively influence the mindsets of others by not allowing the ploy of the haters to dictate what is fitting or not. When I read DnDCfromChi-town’s comments all I got out of them was those of an American citizen who was proud of the POTUS and unashamed to include his full name. When more of us who support this President can do likewise, “Hussein” will be just another common name that happens to be attached to an uncommon president.

Its the same tactic they used to destroy Howard Dean. They played the Dean excitement scream over and over and looped it for weeks. MSM always jumps on the right wing talking points without thinking. That cost Dean the president cause he was a much better candidate than Kerry.

So true. It wasn't until much later that one or two members of the press "owned up" to the fact that there was audio difficulty in the room/arena where Dean was speaking, and that because of that, he was forced to scream. It was irresponsible of the press not to report this "tiny" detail.

Ain't THAT the truth! I think everyone would be shocked at how different that sermon was if they had heard the whole thing, which is available online for anyone interested. I did that by just doing a search for Rev. Jeremiah Wright entire sermon. BTW, I really don't think President Obama had ever heard that sermon when he gave his race speech. If he had, he might have changed what he said. Oh well, water under the bridge. It didn't hurt his chances of winning, but I think it still has damaged his reputation among people who are not inclined to like him anyway. A shame the media can't get to the truth of these situations instead of just going with the gossip and the sound bites.
