What's Your Reaction?

We're pretty sure offering the Pope "pussy" is inappropriate, but doing it in the name of solving world hunger seems a little less crazy. Sarah Silverman launched a new campaign this weekend on "Real Time with Bill Maher" in which she pleads with the Catholic Church to sell the Vatican to save the world: "You preach to live humbly, and I totally agree. So now maybe it's time for you to move out of your house that is a city." Silverman outlines her plan in the following video which may prove unpopular among Catholics and highly popular amongst Silverman fans.

$500 billion spread over 907 milion (FAO estimate of malnourished in developing countries)
would provide an additional $1.24 a day for a year. Do the math, it's not much of a solution.

What is 10% of the world's wealth? Would that feed the poor? Because that is what the Catholic church has -- 10% of the world's wealth, accrued mostly through slave labor and influence peddling. Not only is the pope's house a city, but he has prime real estate in every corner of the globe. Catholic church market makers make currency, gold, and oil prices rise and fall to make money off of money. Plus they've bought politicians everywhere to ensure nation states do not get in the way of their bread and butter shake down pyramid scheme -- 10% of any income the poor manages to earn. And then there's the tax exempt status on these scams, ...

I don't think we need to cajole the church into doing this. I think we should impose a constructive trust on all catholic property and just do this.

Sell Hollywood...or just Beverly Hills. Let's start there since that seems to be the hotbead for such great ideas. That would be a good start. Come on Sarah, set the example.

To be fair, celebrities generally don't take vows of poverty and charity.

There is one problem though; Who would buy the Vatican?
Unless you dismantle it and sell it stone by stone, statue by statue.

Sell all that stuff and the Pope and all those priests who took vows of poverty SHOULD FOLLOW THEIR VOWS.

The only priests who take vows of poverty are the ones who belong to religious orders, ie, Jesuits, Dominicans, Franciscans, etc.

Diocesan priests, most bishops (except Cardinal O'Malley of Boston...he's a Franciscan) do not take vows of poverty because they are diocesan, not religious.

It's a better idea if the one's who could afford to buy the Vatican instead spend that money on feeding the world.

I loved that skit --- because I've been saying that a variation of that for years:
sell JUST the Vatican treasures, those on display - and those still hidden - and feed the world.

Sell the treasures and feed them for a day (OK a lot of years, assuming there is enough food at any price to feed the world). Teach them that giving their money to the Church will buy them salvation and being fed no longer matters.

When Sarah is on she is effing brilliant. The Pope's wardrobe budget would probably feed a small country.

in "Shoes of the Fisherman," Pope Kiril (Anthony Quinn) proposed this ......

It was a work of fiction then, it's still fictional.

I thought the Catholic Church already had a simple plan to solve World Hunger - Give the Poor Orvis Sporting catalogs and the next thing you know they'll all be dining on fresh salmon!

Or boring us with tips on how to tie the proper fly...

Well, I'd wait awhile till they pay out compensation to all the victim's of abuse first. I'm from Ireland & that is unfinished business here...& I'm sure there are a number of other countries that are in the queue. So yes, your idea is sort of an idea, but we've all a responsibility to do our bit for those starving or malnourished....& I didn't hear you asking for all the other churches & religion's to do the same. There's a litany of them, & some even misrepresented by maniac's fighting war's & other screwball action's. So, go back & do another video & do your plea properly by adding in every church, & what about the bank's who are still handing out immoral bonuses to their employee's, bring them in too. But seriously, this is such a massive problem world-wide that it would have to be thought out properly, & don't forget another thing, there are many catholic missions & charities doing great work in this area as well. So, don't kill off the goose just yet, that lays some of the "Golden Egg"!
