The Independent:

They are the last survivors: all that's left of a once-vibrant civilisation which created its own religion and language, and gave special names to everything from the creatures of the rainforest to the stars of the night sky.

capitalism!

What a heart wrenching story! I have not felt so guilty in a long long time. My fine office desk may have contributed to the genocide and extinction of other humans. This is exactly what "civilization" and "civilized world" have brought us.

If there are only 5 of them left then this tribe was done a long time ago. Maybe they should have re-thought their tradition of not marrying outsiders.

Did you actually read beyond the title of the article to find out what happened for there to be only 5 survivors left?

Five people ain't a tribe, it's the GOP!

Keep eating at McDonald's and buying lumber from Home Depot and maybe we can wipe out the other 5.

Only after the last tree has been cut down;
Only after the last river has been poisoned;
Only after the last fish has been caught;
Only then will you find money can not be eaten.

This was written by a Native American of the U.S.

These Natives were destroyed by the exact same attitude that is grossly displayed here against Republicans.
02:20 PM on 10/13/2009
right... because everyone knows republicans are the party conservation.

If you were among those nearly extinct or under siege of some sort (and don't doubt that may be the condition we all find ourselves in, sooner or later), your attitude might be more serious. I believe that 'our' planet will survive the devastation that man has wreaked upon it, but I don't think that man will. Nature has its ways of eliminating that which causes major imbalance on Earth, be it by microbial plagues, physical mechanisms such as volcanism, earthquakes, tsunamis, famine, or by unnatural mechanisms such as deliberate wars and 'necessary' wars too.
Mankind has evolved either too far or not far enough. Its moral capacity has not kept up with its intellectual growth. Sad that evolution has taken that road in man's case. On the bright side, maybe we can hope that the moral side will start to expand before the species dies out.

After watching too many episodes of "Survivor" the natives began voting out the stronger, healthier members of their tribe.
