Despite Obama's Thompson Endorsement, President Still Talks Bloomberg In Weekly Address (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 03:20 PM ET

President Obama may have tepidly endorsed Bill Thompson in the New York City mayoral race, but it was his opponent that got all the attention in last week's weekly address.

Obama name-checked Bloomberg as one of a handful of "distinguished leaders [who] understand that health insurance reform isn't a Democratic issue or a Republican issue, but an American issue that demands a solution."

Obama has publicly praised Bloomberg in the past as well.

Regardless, as Politicker NY points out, in the end, Thompson "gets to say something Bloomberg can't: 'endorsed by Obama.'"

Thompson reacts to Obama's Friday endorsement:

The gap between the two are too wide for the president to step in.

Really Disgusting when Obama should sent the FBI to investigate the back door dealings of term limits extensions and all the non-contract bids that when to Bloomberg's friend and family. Not to mention the slush fund scandals that he and Quinn were involved. disgusting

Barrick Obama won the presidency purely on luck and his friendly corporate donors, he would have never survived GOP attacks if Hillary Clinton didn't take em for him. If Barrick fails his first term, looks like he will based on his performance in the past 10 months, get ready for Hillary in 2012.

For the next 3 years it will be: Obama Inc. VS. American working families, chances are working families will lose to the former lawyer, unless they'll get up do what Tea partiers did on 9/12/2009, and do it everyday.

Barrick's friendly top donors include:

Goldman Sachs & Co. , JP Morgan, Citigroup, UBS AG, Google, Lehman Brothers, National Amusements

Jeez, New Yorkers are absolutely ruthless. These reporters are treating Bill Thompson with as much disdain as a child trying to be elected Mayor of New York City.

A lot of people don't think he can win, but that is not a good reason for the tone of disdain from the press. This is not a primary. It would be one thing if he were still in a primary, but he's the Democratic candidate and he's been endorsed by President Obama.

President Obama's lack of confidence in the Governor didn't change much, so maybe Barack just doesn't have much sway in New York politics. He's doing pretty well internationally and nationally, so a it's alright.

Bloomberg is a billionaire D-bag who thinks he's above the rules. He completely ignored TWO referendums by NYC voters FOR term limits and instead did an 'end run' around the people so he could a third vanity run at Mayor. He's little better than a criminal!
12:46 PM on 10/12/2009
Just more proof of Obama's corruption.

"the guy insulted the voters by saying event ho they voted for tem limits he's running for a 3rd term anyway? BAD MA..wait he has HOW much money?

Bloomberg is awesome!"

Our president is a sellout, this isn't surprising.

And the times for NYC get sadder and sadder. It is just amazing that people are so "fed up with Bloomberg" but will not see through Bloomberg's BS and throw him out on Election Day. Is the Bloomberg camp working to intimidate voters?

big bucks = our gov't

certainly, some portion of Bloomberg's billions help Obama purchase his election.
his half-arsed "endorsement" of the dem in the race was a nod to his party....hardly.

True, but I don't understand why Bill Thompson isn't hitting the mayor harder on this disconnect between hard working New Yorkers and the fat cats. The MTA workers learnt their lesson, played by the rules, and now even a paltry 11% over three years is being challenged by a mayor who thinks that the CEO's of HMO's don't really make a huge salary. This as so many New Yorkers spend their days in unemployment offices and job hunting. I don't even want to touch the term limits thing, it's so nauseating.

I admire the President greatly, but he is gushing with praise about a mayor who recently stated that the top people at HMO's are not really paid that much, but then lent his support to plans by the MTA to deny transit workers an 11 % raise spread over three years. Is that really the sort of bed-fellow this President should have?
11:51 AM on 10/12/2009
Exactly! If Mr. Bloomberg wants to serve our city, he can volunteer, start a foundation, there are a lot of ways he can help New York besides running for a term we never said he could run for.

Right? That's sooooo angering to me that he and a majority of weasels on the City Council decided they wanted another run! They should NOT be re-elected!
10:04 AM on 10/12/2009
He is Preesident but he is also a Democrat. It's obvious he would endorse the Dem but it's also obvious who he wants to win.
12:39 PM on 10/12/2009
No what's obvious is that Obama doesn't care who wins. Neither thompson or bloomberg are a threat to his agenda.
