Los Angeles Times:

Days before the outcome of Afghanistan's contentious presidential vote was expected to be announced, the head of the United Nations mission in the country acknowledged Sunday that widespread electoral fraud had occurred.

But the official, Kai Eide, strongly contested allegations by his former deputy that he had engaged in a cover-up of vote-rigging by supporters of President Hamid Karzai.

When the US, and the UN were announcing that Karzai would be the winner before the elections how much credibility does a UN report that Karzai won have? Just because a bunch of politicians from Europe (NATO) decide to support the UN does not mean that the Afghan people will agree with whatever the UN decides. All this means is that Karzai will be viewed as even more of a US puppet than before the election.

“U.N. official defends Afghanistan election despite widespread fraud”

So what if there are a few irregularities. Its not as if we were trying to out do Iran. Or pretend to be a “democratic” western nation for goodness sake. And don’t bring up the subject of torture, either.

Of course they did. A nod and a wink from one of the most corrupt organizations on the planet to a sham election.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. In some places any government is better than no government. True democracy only works from the bottom up.

The UN, like the US is concerned with stability most of all and preventing the Taliban from regaining power.

Forcing the same standards of democracy (which are not even that great in the US remember) on places like Afghanistan is simply naive.
