The national space program is scheduled to end soon, and a vocal group of enthusiasts, businesses and cities have banded together to promote Save Space, a letter-writing campaign that asks President Obama to renew funding for the space shuttle and assorted programs.

Save Space aims to send 500,000 physical letters (not e-mails) to the President and Congress by the end of October. Follow Save Space on Twitter for updates on the campaign.

I absolutely agree we need to save our space program! NASA needs to be funded to actually make Americans the leaders in space exploration once again!

Satellite communications, microwaves, cellular phones, miniaturized computers, pacemakers, kidney dialysis, scratch-resistant lenses, medical and sports technology, adjustable smoke detectors, cordless tools, and water filters are just a few examples of the advances that have occurred through NASA space research. Not to mention the entrepreneurs, jobs, and commercial aspects of many space research spin-offs.

Don't let America's leadership in space be lost because you didn't speak up. Let President Barack Obama know that all Americans, care about our security, our economic competitiveness, and our space program.

The space program? Sure! But not the shuttle. The space shuttle has been an expensive, time-wasting boondoggle.
