Memorial Websites

guardian.co.uk:

Memorial websites are sites where friends and family members upload photographs, sometimes videos and favourite music tracks, with space for people to leave their memories and messages of condolence. Many sites are not private and can be viewed, and added to, by anyone.

Call me callous, I think the 'comfort' of a memorial website is the same as the roadside memorials, or the lettering on the back of pick up trucks (seems to be a new novelty in the south) - to let everyone know how much you are grieving.

My dog, Fayeroe, died unexpectedly in February, 2009. I was devastated and went online to see if there were message boards available for pet loss. I found a memorial site and over the weeks that it has taken me to create her pages, I've found a small amount of peace. Faye was only 7 and healthy and I've met other pet owners who experienced something similiar. I had felt like I was crazy until I talked to those people and realized that my feelings were normal. It is normal to have more "trauma" when you lose someone so unexpectedly.
Natually, my opinion is that, for pets, a memorial site for me is fine..more than fine...very helpful.
In the end whatever helps someone work through their grief works for me. I'm glad that that type online service is here.

I was helped by similar boards (and Facebook groups) when my dog Lucy died! It really did help. Glad I'm not the only one. I also posted about her on Facebook, and so many of my friends shared memories of her. It was touching to see how much one dog was remembered.

I am very sorry about your Faye; losing a dog or is cat is wrenching. Your feelings ARE normal; pets are members of the family and we should be able to grieve and mourn as we do for people. The pain lessens with time, though I still dream about my childhood dog. They are all just so precious and special.
