Swine flu has claimed its latest victim: beer pong.

Officials at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute are warning students that the drinking game (and college past time) was responsible for the spreading of the H1N1 virus in an incident this past weekend.

The game calls for participants to throw ping pong balls into each others' cups of beer, allowing for the easy transfer of germs from players' hands and mouths to their competitors.

According to AP, the college has reported "21 cases of swine flu, including seven students who are in isolation rooms on the school's campus."

Gaaaah! This is really going to put a crimp in Beer Pong's meteoric return to glory in the pop culture universe!

Finally a factually correct article! Other articles claim that RPI has banned beer pong, and they have not. They DO discourage it. However, RPI should be far more concerned with the shared utensil serving stations (like the salad bar, etc) than they should be with beer pong. Furthermore, if the culprit was beer pong, a game played mainly in Greek Houses, a HUGE number of greek life students would be getting ill. Not just a small group of people, especially when you consider how many teams rotate on and off of a given beer pong table in one night.

from Wiki: "The losing team must consume all the beer remaining in the winning team's cups."

Well, that seems backwards. Free beers for the losers. They get blasted and go home laughing & puking, while the winners are sober and can only brag to themselves b'cuz the rest are no longer lucid. hmmm

I know kids are supposed to do dumb things, but they need to be constantly reminded of the perils of poor hygiene and transfer of bodily fluids. The world is less & less safe every generation. It's a miracle if a kid grows up without some chronic virus.

Actually origins date back to Dartmouth in the 50s, 60s, so maybe you are not old enough :)

umm. Well we play Beer Pong here and Winthrop University and we fill the cups with water, and have our beers on the side. I thought everybody did that nowadays. I guess not.

How do you determine how much beer to drink when an opponent lands a ball in one of your cups?
