Dyson Air Multiplier: Bladeless Fan Keeps You Cool (VIDEO)

Dyson Fan

An electric fan with no blades? It's possible.

Dyson's new bladeless fan looks more like an over-sized magnifying glass than something that'll keep you cool.

But it does! Wired explains,

Air is drawn up through the base of the unit and forced out through the blue loop amplifier that sits atop the rig. As the air jets through to the front it draws even more air from behind and to the sides which amplifies the resulting airflow. Dyson claims the Multiplier increases pressure 15-fold and spews 405 litres of air every second.

This (rather vague) Dyson marketing diagram doesn't clarify a whole lot and suggests something much simpler could be behind it all: multicolor blue arrows.

Priced at about $300, you'd better hope you love the look.

I can imagine the power consumption for this is probably higher than an average fan and as "Jetson-esk" this fan might be, I won't be spending 300 bucks plus tax to move air around. Not even cooled air either.
I can get a really nice $150.00 ceiling fan from Lamps Plus, increase my home value and keep that "300 dollars for this, are you nuts!?!?" look off my wife's face all at the same time.

dyson makes cool products.. this one seems even cooler than usual... (hah)

really though.. i have to wonder how effective it is.. it uses an impeller and supposedly 'amplifies' air flow.. i suppose it is possible that it is slightly more effective than a pocket fan, but i wonder how it compares to a $15 box fan... it just couldnt...

but then a 50$ vacuum cannot come close to a $300 dyson.. not without infringing dyson IP...

how much electricity does it use? if it'l pay for itself with a drop in monthly juice charges, i'd buy one. there is always at least one fan going in in my house.

Well I like toys but when the Dyson name came up I knew it'd be out of reach. The price will drop but it'll not get even close to a practical 50 dollar range.

Then there must be fan blades in the base to draw up the air at the bottom, not really bladeless, more like 'hidden fan blades'.

It uses an impeller, so yes, there are blades in the device, but they are not fan blades.

For $300 dollars, I think I will stick with an old fashion fan.

Yup you can buy one for probably less than $30. For $300 I'd buy a fan that has collectible value (yup there are fan fan clubs-google it)
