Nobel Jury Defends Obama Decision: We Disagree That He Has Done Nothing

IAN MacDOUGALL and KARL RITTER   10/13/09 10:40 PM ET   AP

Obama

OSLO — One judge noted with surprise that President Barack Obama "didn't look particularly happy" at being named the Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Another marveled at how critics could be so patronizing.

In a rare public defense of a process normally shrouded in secrecy, four of the Nobel jury's five judges spoke out Tuesday about a selection they said was both merited and unanimous.

To those who say a Nobel is too much too soon in Obama's young presidency, "We simply disagree ... He got the prize for what he has done," committee chairman Thorbjorn Jagland told The Associated Press by telephone from Strasbourg, France, where he was attending meetings of the Council of Europe.

Jagland singled out Obama's efforts to heal the divide between the West and the Muslim world and scale down a Bush-era proposal for an anti-missile shield in Europe.

"All these things have contributed to – I wouldn't say a safer world – but a world with less tension," he said.

For nine-year Nobel committee veteran Inger-Marie Ytterhorn, Obama's demeanor spoke volumes when he first acknowledged the award during a news conference Friday on the lawn of the White House Rose Garden.

"I looked at his face when he was on TV and confirmed that he would receive the prize and would come to Norway, and he didn't look particularly happy," she told the AP by telephone.

"Obama has a lot of problems internally in the United States and they seem to be increasing. Unemployment, health care reform: They are a problem for him," she said.

She acknowledged there was a risk the prize might backfire on Obama by raising expectations even higher and giving ammunition to his critics. "It might hamper him," Ytterhorn said, because it could distract from domestic issues.

Still, she added: "Whenever we award the peace prize, there is normally a big debate about it" so the Obama controversy was not unexpected.

It was unusual, however, for the Nobel jury to speak out so candidly about their selection.

Even the most seasoned Nobel watchers were surprised by Obama's Nobel – they hadn't expected the U.S. president, who took office barely two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline, to be seriously considered until at least next year.

Jagland said that was never an issue for the Nobel committee, which followed the guidelines set forth by Alfred Nobel, the Swedish industrialist and inventor of dynamite who established the prize in his 1895 will.

"Alfred Nobel wrote that the prize should go to the person who has contributed most to the development of peace in the previous year," Jagland said.

"Who has done more for that than Barack Obama?"

Aagot Valle, a left-wing Norwegian politician who joined the Nobel panel this year, also dismissed suggestions that Obama was undeserving of the honor.

"Don't you think that comments like that patronize Obama? Where do these people come from?" Valle said from the coastal city of Bergen. "Well, of course, all arguments have to be considered seriously. I'm not afraid of a debate on the Peace Prize decision. That's fine."

World leaders have reacted positively to Obama's Nobel in most cases, the committee said, with much of the criticism coming from the media and Obama's political rivals.

"I take note of it. My response is only the judgment of the committee, which was unanimous," Jagland said.

In announcing the award Friday, the committee, whose members are appointed by the Norwegian Parliament, applauded the change in global mood brought by Obama's calls for peace and cooperation. They also praised his pledges to reduce the world stock of nuclear arms, ease U.S. conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthen the U.S. role in combating climate change.

The White House declined comment on the Nobel judge's latest statements.

However, Obama expressed surprise and humility at Friday's news conference, saying the prize should be considered not a "recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations."

Nobel Peace Prize selections have often been surrounded by fierce debate. Controversial awards include the 1994 prize shared by Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli leaders Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin for Mideast peace efforts, as well as the joint prize to Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and North Vietnamese negotiator Le Duc Tho for a 1973 cease-fire agreement. The Vietnam War continued for two more years.

So the Nobel jury "expected that there would be a discussion" about Obama's award, said Kaci Kullman Five, a former Conservative Party parliamentarian and longtime Nobel committee member.

Valle said the criticism shouldn't overshadow important issues raised by Obama's Nobel.

"Of course I expected disagreement and debate on ... giving him the prize," she said. "But what I want now is that we seriously raise a discussion regarding nuclear disarmament."

Nobel prize award is consuming us, what about Afghanistan, Iraq, America?
Stop the nonsense, the decision is not yours or mine to make. Sillt time seems to be a daily habit. This isn't going to change your life or mine, however there are many important issues that we could discuss to try and come to terms with, improving our schools where the future of America is being groomed is just one, precious time is spent on such benign issues.
Pay attention to the crazies out there whose idealogy is being foisted on the public. My hope is they are preaching to the choir just like most of the fringe talking heads on air every day. They are making millions by feeding the frenzy of their gullible followers and smiling all the way to the bank. How many of these bubblehads have feed the homeless or set up medical clinics to help our down and out?
We are being over run by the religious zealots who are seeking their 15 minutes of fame & unfortunately TV stations are willing to give it to them. Of course it makes for an easy time filler.
We can do so much better, we have in the past, why not today?

I believe that this prize may help realize the potential that many of us saw in Obama; I pray that is so.
Clearly the Nobel Committee's choice makes it clear that the hateful right wing is out of step with America, the world and anyone who believes in peace, social justice and progress. I am proud that the world sees the desire views our President as a man of peace and i hope that he will truly become a peace president.

I am glad they chose our president, and i am glad why they said they chose him and I agree with it. None, of us know what the outcome will bring but I am wishing our president continual success. President Obama, had a mission to mend the gap that was produced during the last administration and I think he has done a fine job at it. Just my view.

The one judge was right, it's already backfiring, setting the bar of expectations high, and providing ammunition to critics.

But then again, I prefer that to setting the bar of expectations low, so it's easy to surpass them. Hmmmm...Wonder who that was?

Obama got elected while appealing to our better natures, not our fears and our hatreds. That alone is amazing.

From the point of view of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee, what Obama has done is the equivalent of the Phoenix rising from the ashes. The Bush/Cheney years signaled the end of America's constructive role in international affairs, while Obama represents America returning to its core principles.

Of course the neo-cons are protesting, and yelling and screaming, but the rest of the world is breathing a big, long, sincere sigh of relief that a decent American is now in the White House. Succeeding against the hate-filled and lie-filled right-wing propaganda machine is a major accomplishment in itself, and for nine long months Obama has been working, not only to right the ship of state, but to rebuild the international framework for solving problems multilaterally and, hopefully, peacefully.

You use the lists at politifact.com to try to make the case the Obama has "done something," and that he has kept more promises than he has broken. OK...

Tell us now, which one of those "promises kept" earned Obama the Nobel? Or take any ten of them together. Which ones qualify him for the prize? Unless you want to make claims about the promises he fulfilled toward the International Space Station program, I don't see a single item on that list which pertains to foreign policy.

I must point out to you that politifact.com is not keeping track of every politician's favorite list -- the one entitled "promises deferred." You don't know when, or whether, they will be kept. For many Bush Adminstration policies, keeping the status quo is equivalent to a broken promise for many people. Why haven't we at least sorted out Guantanamo in time for the Nobel Peace Prize? Why are we continuing to use the practice of extraordinary rendition?

Politifact.com is also ignoring every politician's second-favorite list: "emergencies." To take a domestic example: many analysts suspect that the TARP will eventually be shown to be a $1 trillion extortion payment to big banks. Are we investigating the TARP decisions? No. Whose responsibility is that? Which of Obama's promises will not be fulfilled because TARP emptied the Treasury?

You are too quick to sing Obama's praises. Wait and see. The Nobel Committee should have done likewise.

Yea, fulfilling that promise will surely change the world.

"But what I want now is that we seriously raise a discussion regarding nuclear disarmament."
ehhh....
According to Izvestia, Russians offered the Peace Prize winner a deal to reduce the nuclear arsenal down to 500 units each..
The Peace Prize winner declined and countered that 1,100 units was more appropriate.

I would agree. People act like such an undertaking is a simple matter. The problem is cost, how to do it. The Republicans will not go along with such a costly enterprise and will block such an action in the Senate.

Some (I'd call them "people," but veracity forbids) will claim that the very fact that the Nobel Committee is defending its decision is evidence that President Obama does not deserve the prize. These, uh, in-duh-vi(dious)duals ignore the defense of the Prize when it was awarded to Teddy Roosevelt and Willi Brandt.

The article itself states that much of the criticism comes from the (shill) media and the President's political rivals. Well, that says everything we need to know. Rare indeed is the man who will praise his rival for winning an honour he might have desired for himself. And clearly, the President's rivals do not rise to that high standard. As for the media, they have degenerated into a shameless bunch of hacks who live by the motto, "If it bleeds, it leads."

Many world leaders are pleased that the American President took this honour. The President himself, being a man of modesty and humility, accepted the award with his customary grace. His detractors are simply embarrassing themselves with their frothing fury. Bad cess to them all.

Cramer on those who opposed bailouts: "Did they ever read any history about what this country did wrong between 1929 and 1932? ... What these pundits are calling for is exactly what created a multi-year depression. No, I mean -- Bernanke, Obama, Geithner, they got it right."

Yeah, just more dopey, lost Republicans who think up is down still. Obama won because he kicked them all to the curb just in time to save us. If he didn't do that and they still had power, just imagine how things would be right now. Give the man a prize!

The fact that he is a man of modesty and humility argues even more strongly in his favour. When I remember that posturing f 00 / Bouche yelling "Bring it on!" and the resulting losses suffered by our troops ... that arrogance and those bullying tactics employed by both Bouche and Mc Ancient ... the complete lack of humility in Sairy Failin' with her "gotcha questions" when she couldn't cite a single publication that she read regularly ... I am overwhelmed with gratitude that my fellow Americans voted this man in.

For eight years, the world has trembled as it watches us edge ever closer to all-encompassing war. Just over the past year, a tremendous change has occurred. Turkey and Armenia are talking. We're talking to the Iranians. The North Koreans released two American journalists, with no demands and fairly mild bluster. We're no longer at the edge of a precipice.

Yes, My President deserves the Nobel. And I'm very proud of him, and of all the Americans who trudged to the voting booths to make sure that he led us away from war and towards peace and the healing of the nation and the world.

Well, there is a headline on this site saying TAX DODGER CRACKDOWN SHELVED BY OBAMA ADMINISTRATION.

Maybe this Nobel Committee should award prizes to a U.S. president for doing what is right which is closing offshore loopholes, hunting down tax dodgers and straitening out that woefully corrupted income tax code!

The Committee said Mr. Obama was humble. Well his speech writer, who wrote the acceptance speech, was anything but humble for he declared that this prize was a CALL FOR ACTION.

So far in this Administration, Holder, the attorney general, has not investigated a g*d d*amn thing when there was 8 years of unbridled government and corporate crime to work on!

No more prizes for INSPIRATION,until the recipient has DONE SIGNIFICANT ACTION.

Excuse me - you may not have noticed but the GOP no longer are in charge. Who made that happen? Who is beating down the GOP day after day? You think that isn't an accomplishment? Obama beat the most violent, ignorant, and corrupt people on the planet. You think the world, who suffered greatly because of GOP policies and violence, doesn't appreciate that just because you don't?

The world despises the GOP so much, they gave the Nobel Prize to the one man who took power from them and put them in check. Of course they're going to give him the Nobel Peace Prize for that. That was the best thing anyone in the world could have done.
