What's Your Reaction?
Jackie Robinson Day

The Republican National Committee released a new website on Tuesday that goes to great lengths to depict the party as open to minority interests.

The most obvious example comes on the "Heroes" page where the RNC pinpoints 16 figures who were "Patriots: American Heroes & Famous Republicans." The list includes seven African-Americans, one Hispanic-American, and four women. Only four white men are included, three of whom had direct ties to the advancement of civil rights in America. Former President Abraham Lincoln made the list, as did former Justice Frank Johnson, who was instrumental in court decisions that helped end segregation in the South. Finally, there was former Sen. Everett Dirksen of Illinois, who helped write and pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

But the GOP may have muddled is message by including individuals who would scoff at today's Republican Party.

As pointed out by a Democratic source, the inclusion of baseball star Jackie Robinson on the list seems particularly egregious. The former Dodger, who broke baseball's color barrier, was far from a dyed-in-the-wool conservative. Robinson's ties to the GOP seemed more driven by a personal admiration for Nelson Rockefeller -- the New Yorker who would end up being vice president under Gerald Ford -- than it was core ideological convictions. In his biography, Robinson said that as the Republican Party leadership tilted towards Barry Goldwater conservatives, he began to have "a better understanding of how it must have felt to be a Jew in Hitler's Germany."

Writing on page 340 of the autobiography, "I Never Had It Made", Robinson went so far as to insist that he be called an independent, "since I've never identified myself with one party or another in politics." In 1968 he campaigned for Hubert Humphrey.

"I was not as sold on the Republican party as I was on the governor," Robinson wrote of Rockefeller. "Every chance I got, while I was campaigning, I said plainly what I thought of the right-wing Republicans and the harm they were doing. I felt the GOP was a minority party in term of numbers of registered voters and could not win unless they updated their social philosophy and sponsored candidates and principles to attract the young, the black, and the independent voter. I said this often from public, and frequently Republican, platforms. By and large Republicans had ignored blacks and sometimes handpicked a few servile leaders in the black community to be their token "niggers." How would I sound trying to go all out to sell Republicans to black people? They're not buying. They know better."

"I admit freely that I think, live, and breathe black first and foremost. That is one of the reasons I was so committed to the governor and so opposed to Senator Barry Goldwater. Early in 1964 I wrote a Speaking Out piece for The Saturday Evening Post. A Barry Goldwater victory would insure that the GOP would be completely the white man's party. What happened at San Francisco when Senator Goldwater became the Republican standard-bearer confirmed my prediction."

"I wasn't altogether caught of guard by the victory of the reactionary forces in the Republican party, but I was appalled by the tactics they used to stifle their liberal opposition," Robinson wrote of that 1964 convention. "I was a special delegate to the convention through an arrangement made by the Rockefeller office. That convention was one of the most unforgettable and frightening experiences of my life. The hatred I saw was unique to me because it was hatred directed against a white man. It embodied a revulsion for all he stood for, including his enlightened attitude toward black people."

If there is a lesson to be learned from this story, it's that the Republican party (please don't call them GOP! They're not grand at all!), like most journalists and politicians, gets their information from Wikipedia. Wikipedia says on the subject 'Jackie Robinson' that he's a Republican, even though it has no source for it, even though Robinson HIMSELF says that he's not sold on the Republican party. Of course I changed his political alignment to 'independent' but it was changed back, claiming that my source was the HuffPost, instead of ROBINSON's OWN AUTOBIOGRAPHY!!!
I can only say, the lesson is this: if HuffPost readers really care about Robinson's political alignment, they should have paid attention to this kind of nonsense on the modern-day encyclopedia beforehand. Being progressive, lefty or liberal or whatever you want to call it, asks for an awakened look around the world, it asks for awareness.

This is laughable. Shows the GOP STILL doesn't know a thing about minority issues. Many blacks were Republicans before the Civil Rights Act was passed. Duh! I have many older relatives who were registered Republicans during that time. When the Republican party turned into the Strom Thurmond's of the world, most blacks fled that party.

It's not about party, it's about treatment, causes , fairness and treating people like you would your own family.

Had Thomas Jefferson been living today, he'd be either Independent or Democrat. He loved his Sally and their 8 kids remember.

It doesn't much matter if somebody like Jackie Robinson once supported a Republican Party or not. The point is that he wouldn't do it today. The Republican Party has been the party of racism since the late 1940's and it has remained that way. Their recent hysteria over the election of President Barack Obama has only cemented that perception in the minds of most African American's.

Well, yes. That was pretty much the point of the article, if you read the whole thing.

The thing is, you can't trust the Republicans. They always want to make something "seem" different than it is. This may be an attempt to reach out for the black vote...by a party that has ZERO BLACK SENATORS & CONGRESSMEN!!!

and a token black leader who none of them seem to really like or agree with, but they needed a band-aid on their hemorrhaging image.

This is a Fraudulent and Weak attempt to superficially Re-brand themselves. The RNC has become an Undying Mindless Zombie. It is being kept alive by the GOP Southern Strategy from 50 years ago. The GOP is a far cry from what it was 50 years ago prior to the Southern Strategy where they refused to support Civil Rights and take in all the Southern Politicians and Voters. Barry Goldwater himself admitted that the was wrong and how that the GOP had been taken over by The Religious Right. he stated that "He" was the "New Liberal" in the Republican Party.
In 1996, he told Bob Dole, whose own presidential campaign received lukewarm support from conservative Republicans: "We're the new liberals of the Republican party. Can you imagine that?"

Please Read:
That old-time "Southern strategy"

What keeps the GOP Zombie alive are the Southern Poor, Religious Charlatans, The Poorly Educated, Disenfranchised Lunatics and Bigots.

Prior to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Jackie Robinson would have been a member of the GOP and proud of it. After that, the GOP would have told Jackie Robinson to kick rocks because he wouldn't have been welcomed in the Party because of the fact that the Dixiecrats took over the GOP. It's funny how the GOP likes to pander to minorities and women. President Obama wins the election, get Michael Steele to run the RNC. Hillary Clinton was a candidate for POTUS, get Sarah Palin to be McCain's running mate. If the GOP was serious about attracting minorities and women to their party, they'd focus on fixing the reasons why minorities and women are turning away from the GOP.

Republicans changed in 1960's when they adopted the dixiecrats who abandoned the democrat party in protest over segregation and ending of the old Jim Crow laws in deep south, this was the time when the GOP got took over by racists who left the democratic party! And to this day they dominate, even though the GOP today is about 21% a dead enders club, they try to hide their racism and bigotry with the appointment of a black man Michael Steele as a token figure head, but reality is its the Rush Limbaugh's and Laura Ingrahams who are the defacto leaders of the GOP and they preach skin tone hatred 24/7 on the radio! If anyone wants to know what the GOP is simply tune to any right wing radio station, or tune to Fox & Friends which is the defacto arm of the GOP no matter how much they protest! Glenn Beck is the face of the GOP at Fox as well as Sean Hannity who seems to be unseated by Beck for most part!

For all the spin trying to make inclusion seem part of the GOP platform, there are several members of the GOP who are relegated the pup tent right behind the Big Tent who get paraded out usually right around elections.

No matter how hard the GOP tries, they will never convince blacks to join them. The attacks on President Obama reveal your true colors. Not that we didn't already know about your hatred towards minorities. The Willie Horton ads, tea party, 9/12 march racially hate signs, the monkey stimulus comic strip in the paper, the uppity comments during the election, people carrying stuffed monkey to the GOP rallies, yelling kill him, yelling terrorist, fake birth certificates, etc. Too many incidents to list. The GOP bridge to blacks is a pile of ashes. The bridge is gone. I would not look too hard at the Latinos either. You hate anything that's not white.

What they fail to mention is that a Sen. Everett Dirksen who helped write the Civil RIghts Act would not have a home in today's GOP, and would be booed off a stage by teabaggers at a so called "town hall" meeting
