AP:

ST. LOUIS (AP)--The Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson attacked the bid by Rush Limbaugh to buy the St. Louis Rams on Monday, saying the conservative radio host's track record on race should exclude him from owning an NFL team.

Sharpton sent a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, arguing that Limbaugh has been divisive and "anti-NFL" in some of his comments.

Jackson said in a telephone interview that Limbaugh had made his wealth "appealing to the fears of whites" with an unending line of insults against blacks and other minorities.

"The National Football League has set high standards for racial justice and inclusion," Jackson said. "He should not have the privilege of owning an NFL franchise--and it is a privilege." The civil rights leader said he's had contact with numerous players and ex-players concerned about the bid.

Limbaugh shot back at Sharpton on his radio show.

"Now, this saddens me as well this disappoints me," he said. "I know Rev. Sharpton. Sharpton is better than this. He knows better than this. You know, I didn't judge Al Sharpton's fitness to be in radio when he wanted to earn an honest living for once, given his well-documented past as the author of the Tawana Brawley hoax. I believe in freedom and I also don't discriminate."

Limbaugh said last week that he is teaming up with St. Louis Blues hockey team owner Dave Checketts in a bid to buy the Rams. He has declined to discuss details of the offer, citing a confidentiality agreement.

In 2003, Limbaugh worked briefly on ESPN's NFL pregame show. He resigned after saying Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb(notes) was overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed.

Transcripts posted on the radio host's Web site also say that on a January 2007 show, Limbaugh commented: "The NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it."

Asked about Limbaugh's bid to purchase the winless Rams, McNabb said: "If he's rewarded to buy them, congratulations to him. But I won't be in St. Louis any time soon."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league is aware of the concerns voiced by Sharpton and Jackson.

"It is very early in the process and no transfer of ownership of the Rams has been presented to the league for review," Aiello said.

The latest complaints came a day after executive director of the NFL Players Association, DeMaurice Smith, urged players to speak out against Limbaugh's bid.

"I have asked our players to embrace their roles not only in the game of football but also as players and partners in the business of the NFL," Smith said in a statement Sunday. "They risk everything to play this game, they understand that risk and they live with that risk and its consequences for the rest of their life.

"We also know that there is an ugly part of history and we will not risk going backwards, giving up giving in or lying down to it."

Players on the 0-5 Rams, who were routed by the Minnesota Vikings 38-10 on Sunday, tried to distance themselves from the controversy.

"I'm paying attention, but I'm not even touching that one," running back Steven Jackson said. "Because if I start touching it I might go somewhere I don't want to go."

Defensive end Chris Long(notes) said he just heard Monday that Limbaugh was part of a group seeking to purchase the team. His reaction: "Oh, is that the guy on the radio?"

Reminded of Limbaugh's statements about McNabb, Long seemed to disapprove while adding he didn't care who owned the team.

"I mean, those weren't great comments at all," Long said. "But it's not my job to really comment on that."

Defensive end Leonard Little(notes), the last remaining player from the Rams' Super Bowl championship after the 1999 season, didn't want to talk about it.

"We've got a lot more things to worry about than who's going to be our owner," he said.

Money may not buy you love nor necessarily an NFL franchise, but when you pen an inflammatory column accusing the Rev. Al Sharpton playing a "leading role" in the Crown Heights riot of 1991, it can buy you a defamation suit. Sharpton has said he will sue Limbaugh for that sentence in a Limbaugh opinion piece published Saturday in the Wall Street Journal. In a week where Limbaugh was pilloried from all quarters for his many racist statements, one would think he might learn the benefits of silence. Silence is cheap. But as Mr. Limbaugh is about to learn, opening your yap can be golden — for those you offend.

Politics aside.....why would not Rush be a good choice? People get so wrapped up in their political views/agendas.....If he were unknown and not as outspoken....there would be NO coverage on this at all!

Why would he want to own a group he called gang-bangers ? Nothing to do with politics, he has disgraced these players time and time again...He got what he deserved-nothing !

Here's a great example of limbaugh covert r@cism -

Rush calling Obama a "spade"
and referring to either Hillary or Michelle Obama as a "hoe"

(the "spade" part starts at approx 40 sec into the sound clip from his show)

It's a practical matter. The NFL owners realize that Rush Limbaugh owning a team is bad for business. He does not fit in with the way the NFL does business and would be a huge liability.

The NFL reaction has totally freaked out Limbaugh who, in his narcissistic naivete surely thought that the wealthy NFL owners would welcome him with open arms. But it ends up that Limbaugh cannot buy his way in and is left feeling like a school kid who gets picked last to be on the team. Once again, like in his younger days, he's the geek loser that no one wants on their team. And it hurts double because he's spent so much effort kissing the NFL's rear end in the last few years.

This is devastating to Limbaugh and you can hear it in his voice and his ever more desperate rantings. He has never sounded more pathetic.

He's learning an important lesson: Money can't buy you love and if you're Rush LImbaugh it can't buy you an NFL franchise either. Waahhhhhhh!

No matter what you think of Rush, it is unfortunate that the thought police now determine what investments an American citizen is allowed to make. I think that Rush has a very good lawsuit against CNN and NBC for attributing comments to him that he never made.n Comments such as "Slavery had its merits" and the NAACP/Liquor store comment. Bill Oreilly had his research team (the best in the world) try to find those comments and also asked for anyone who had these comments documented to please give them to his staff so they could verify and post them. So far there have been no submissions. Everyone claims he made racist comments but where are they? The McNabb comment wasn't racist just an observation. Surely Rush could prove damages by being dropped from the investment group. I'm not a huge Rush fan, however, I hope he goes after these people and squeezes every dime he can from them. Americans are sick and tired of being called racists if they bring up blacks in a conversation. Americans are also tired of the agenda driven, left leaning media, who believe that the rules don't apply to them. They think they can slander whoever they want in the name of political correctness. This is 1984 25 years too late. Don't have thoughts that the left doesn't agree with or it could limit where you can invest your money or where you can work.

We're sniping at one another over whether or not someone's politics should preclude them from team ownership, as though there are no conservatives presently holding an ownership interest in any NFL team. Meanwhile, has anyone checked the price of tickets lately? Unless you have a corporate connection, or a buddy who can't unload them, what used to be a really fun father-son / father-daughter weekend event is now priced so out of reach for most just-plain-folks, who really cares if another rich guy buys into the owner's club?

let Rush buy it. it is a losing franchise, so it will really cost him. think of all the patrons who will not show up because of his owning the franchise

There are loyal fans in St. Louis whom you would be selling down the river. It's not as if Limbaugh wants to buy a new car, you know. It's their team!

Al Sharpton has no credibility. Jesse Jackson on the other hand has lots of credibility & needs to be listened to.

But it would be the first time that the Pigskin would be on the owner of an NFL Team. I also wonder what the uniforms would look like for the leagues first Femenazi cheerleeding squad. Would the Commissioner make him submit to random drug tests with the team? And before my head explodes, could he reconcile for me, how someone that despises Unions. That in principle believe's that mandatory revenue sharing by owners is akin to communism, would then want to spend umpteen millions of dollars of his own money to join into this socialistic system.
