LOS ANGELES — Court records show Avril Lavigne has filed for divorce from her musician husband after three years of marriage. Lavigne filed for divorce from Sum 41 singer Deryck Jason Whibley on Friday in Los Angeles.

The couple were married in July 2006 and have no children together. Lavigne cited "irreconcilable differences."

The 25-year-old punk-pop singer burst to fame with her 2002 debut album "Let's Go."

Lavigne is asking a ruling to block Whibley from receiving spousal support.

Court records show Whibley was granted a request to add Lavigne's last name to his name in December 2007.

This about the only truly punk rock thing she's ever done.

Please don't ever use the word "punk" in a sentence describing Avril Lavigne, even if you call her "punk-pop". She's about as phony a punk rocker as one can get. Manufactured rage. A fake.

Good luck blocking him from spousal support in California. It's a community property state, sweetheart.

Looks like your probate attorney will be sorting through all the 'complicated' decrees for you!

I have to laugh that she is trying to block him from spousal support. If she makes more money than him ... he deserves it. That's the way it works ... man or woman.

Somehow many women feel that when a woman gets spousal support, it's justified ... but if a guy gets spousal support, he's a bum.

spousal support exists because traditionally, the woman would stay home taking care of the house and raising the kids while the man was getting an education and/or building his career. so she in effect supported him so he could earn those wages.

in a young, dual-earner household such as this where neither one put off a career so the other could excel, there should be no spousal support.

That is making a lot of assumptions about their life. Maybe you know. I certainly don't. Who knows, maybe he changed his recording/touring/etc schedule because of their relationship and her career/albums/tours. Not saying it is the case, just stating that I don't know what their story is in details, and until then I couldn't say.

A sensible idea, but the law does not agree with you.

According to the courts, alimony has nothing to do with "traditional" roles like raising kids and caring for the home while the other partner works. It is simply a matter of handing over half your assets so that the other partner can maintain a *lifestyle* that is similar, if not equal, to the one enjoyed while they were married. Doesn't matter if they already have their own money and a well-paying job. And it doesn't matter if they were only married for a few years and had no kids. (Obviously, child support is a separate and different issue.) Unless he signed a pre-nup, this guy has every right to demand half of Lavigne's assets so he continue living in a huge house with servants or whatever luxury young, rich celebrities require these days. Anyone bothered by this should work towards changing the alimony laws in this country.

My question is why did they get married at such a young age?! Further more, they should all just fill out whatever forms they need to, to keep each other off of their money. Celebrities never learn and I'm tired of these generic stories.

they were in love and felt the overwhelming desire to protect the sactity of heterosexual marriage. Whty can't you understand that? Dont' you get that if they hadn't gotten married and subsequently divorced after their brief loveless marriage at such a young age, heterosexual marriage would be on the verge of distinctions? Oh wait...never mind.

I can't speak for Avril, but Deryck had been touring with Sum 41 since his mid-teens. If you had already had a large supply of teenage tail, you might be ready to settle down in your early 20s.
