Google Building Maker: Build In 3D On Google Earth (VIDEO)
Google's latest tool, the Building Maker, promises to make Google Earth even more realistic -- and potentially revolutionize "sightseeing."
The modeling tool, which Google describes as a "cross between Google Maps and a gigantic bin of building blocks," allows users to build 3D structures on Google Earth by overlaying squares or rectangles on photos of buildings using Google's SketchUp software.
If it catches on, the already detailed satellite imagery on Google Earth would get even more realistic: users would be able to virtually explore 3D streetscapes of entire towns and cities, becoming virtual tourists in an online model of the world.
Google is hoping to take advantage of the "wisdom of crowds" with this program, the company explained on its official blog:
Some of us here at Google spend almost all of our time thinking about one thing: How do we create a three-dimensional model of every built structure on Earth? How do we make sure it's accurate, that it stays current and that it's useful to everyone who might want to use it?
One of the best ways to get a big project done -- and done well -- is to open it up to the world.
See how it works in the video below.
