Jon Stewart Takes On Fox News For Not Covering Gay Rights March (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 03:20 PM ET

Jon Stewart skewered Fox News last night for covering every tea party protest in America (no matter how small) but not sending a reporter, or even a camera crew, to cover Sunday's gay rights march which included more than 75,000 protesters. Stewart and his team at the "Daily Show" counted how much time Fox devoted to even speaking about the march on Washington and it totaled less than 4 minutes.

There wasn't enough stations covering it already?

Point #1.. How many media outlets cover the march for life in Washington DC? Every year 300,000 or more people gather to protest in D.C against abortion. Coverage is minimal.

Point #2
Most Americans don't care about the gay marriage movement. Only 1% of Americans are openly gay or lesbian. A large portion of American gays live in a handful of urban centres so many Americans don't encounter many openly gay or lesbian people in their lives . Additionally very few gays are in long term relationships. In fact in countries where gay marriage is legal, the number of gays who choose marriage is very very low. In the Netherlands only 1% to 6% of gays bother marrying, depending on the survey, in a liberal country where gay marriage has been legal about 10 years around 95% of gays say no to marriage. With few examples to support the cause ( gay marriage is rare in Canada, Spain and Massachusetts too) it is hard for gay marriage to become a major rallying cry for civil rights.

Fox news did not give much time to the gay rights movement because the Fox news viewer does not care about the gay rights movement!

My comment (in verse) about the coverage disparity :

When tens of thousands march on DC,
What is shown on TV?

On 9-12 if you were watching Fox,
You’d have seen protesters in flocks.
Fox provided coverage day and night
(They always do, for their friends on the Right).

On 10-11, Fox didn’t even bother
To send a news team the gay march to cover.
They used a few minutes of footage from ABC
But that was all Fox viewers could see.

With the Million Man March in 1995,
Fox doesn’t want you to think they’re not balanced.
Fox claims they covered it, but that would have been hard
Since they weren’t yet in existence.

Maybe it’s true in Your World, Neil Cavuto
(Sorry to refute you),
But at the same time you declare
That Fox News is so fair,
You couldn’t stop dissing the Million Man March
By snidely saying again and again
That they were “well shy” of a million men.

It was 837,000 ±20% (between 669,600 and 1,004,400)
According to a scientific study
Sponsored by ABC-TV
And conducted by Boston University.
Maybe a million, maybe not,
But a lot more than your tempest in a teapot.

When one this history reviews
We see Fox only broadcasts what they choose.
If they don’t support you, they refuse.
If they don’t agree with you, you lose.
Only one possible conclusion ensues.
The revolution won’t be televised
…on Fox News.

Probably didn't get covered by Faux because these folks really know how to tea-bag and what it really means. Faux might have been afraid that their old tea-baggers would have been upstaged by the pros, lol.

I loved how Faux kept focusing on the empty streets where the protest "was" held.

Oh Jon Stewart how I love you! You are too funny and thanks for showing how pathetic faux fox news really is. It proves their "fair and balanced" is really "unfair and unbalanced".

Yeah ok, I am really surprise by this, Fox news not covering our movements, now there's a laugh. Come on they've been dodging us every chance they get, and for good reason to, it's not so easy to keep up a conservative poster and continue the usually hate when so many people even heterosexuals are starting to see the civil relevance in Gay rights. So the only thing Fox and it's constituents can do is hope that the issues flies by them and they aren't force to discuss/debate the substance of it.

On a side note, I remember that one time where Or'ly commented on whether the DOMA briefing was legal or not-legal, I thought there was going to be an in dept analysis from him and his two female guess but instead they blow threw it so fast I thought I went to sleep and missed the whole debate. Needless the say, the whole Gay rights issues has become a fail project for conservatives so they've left it on to find better things such as socialize medicine/health reforms.

Ahhh, you must be one of those, spelling correctional officers. Well excuse me sir, next time I'll try a little harder not to offend you, seeing as how you took the time out of your most likely cluttered day to read through my all so elegant and thoughtful masterpiece of an essay and even had enough time left to comment on it.

Jon Stewart so rocks because he uses people's own words against them to display their biases and prejudice clearly. With wit and sarcasm. Go, Jon!

"Fair and Balanced" my @ss! Fox News is, and always will be, a joke.

Fox caters to its base, like any business does. Fox does not pretend to cater to gays.

Well, it's certainly base, since Fox does not cater to anything resembling the mammalian level of evolution.

I am glad that Comedy Central is there when we actually need to get news. What is wrong with this country that the Comedians provide the most reliable news?!
