Research In Motion's Blackberry Storm 2, an upgraded version of the infamous Blackberry Storm, has been unveiled and Verizon has announced a release date of October 28, 2009.

Early reviews of the new Storm 2 suggest that it's an improvement on its predecessor, with an enhanced touchscreen -- but it doesn't look likely to displace the iPhone or other touchscreen smartphones.

CNET says,

As is, the BlackBerry Storm 2 is certainly an improvement over its predecessor, but it wouldn't be our first choice for a touch-screen smartphone.

Laptop Magazine says it's "really more like a do-over than a sequel" and TechRadar writes that the Storm 2 is "very much an improvement over the original Storm, but it's evolutionary rather than revolutionary."

Crackberry explains that the Blackberry Storm 2 is a relatively modest update on the previous model that isn't overly ambitious:

It's clear that Research in Motion's thought process here was simply to build a better BlackBerry Storm. They weren't thinking about building an iPhone killer or worrying about what Palm is up to with their Web OS or what the next wave of Android phones might look like. RIM looked at the original BlackBerry Storm, assessed where it was great, where it was good, where it was bad and where it was ugly and they fixed it.

The touch capabilities of the phone have definitely been improved, early reviews report.

The buttons at the bottom have been changed to "soft keys" (in place of physical keys), and the phone contains new SurePress technology that makes the screen more sensitive, less "wobbly", and more responsive to multitouch pressing.

PC Magazine says:

It's capable of registering two presses at the same time, such as when holding Shift while pressing a letter key. The final result: localized haptic feedback that feels natural. The screen doesn't wiggle around in its perch anymore. Going back and forth between the two Storms, I could type more accurately and more quickly on the new screen--starting from the very first sentence. You get real physical feedback. It's still a little stiff, so prepare for cramped fingers after extended typing sessions.

The phone also comes with Wi-Fi, a camera, GPS capabilities, more memory, and the newest Blackberry OS (version 5).

However, PC Magazine reports that the Storm 2 has "unimpressive Web browsing and [an] underpowered camera."

Walt Mossberg also notes that the Blackberry Storm 2 browser is still "inferior to Apple's, Google's and Palm's," but the touchscreen is big step up from the previous Storm model:

The screen now stays still when tapped, providing tactile feedback electronically instead of mechanically. This allows for faster, smoother typing.

The Washington Post on its touchscreen:

One interesting thing to note: RIM studied the way people typed on touch keyboards, and found that, while typing quickly, they often briefly held down two keys at once. The Storm 2's keyboard mimics that by having both keys respond when you press them, thus making typing faster. And of course, the keyboard has RIM's excellent SureType predictive-text entry, which facilitates speedy typing.

According to a Verizon press release, the Blackberry Storm 2 will be selling for $179.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate.

All this iPhone envy, but where would the mobile phone industry be without it?

A: The Moto-Krzr V18. Now in fuchsia!

The Dark Ages of repackaged plastic phone technology that goes on forever. 128 x 128 pixel screens, little icons arranged in a grid that you have to toggle through--one square up, one square over. At the end of the day, all you have is a piece of plastic that cost as much or more than an iPhone today.

Thanks Apple.

Imitation, the sincerest way of saying, "You figured it out, not us."

The iPhone has no peer! It was the first "game-changer" and still the standard bearer!

Better touchscreen than iPhone. A full keyboard.

"The phone also comes with Wi-Fi, a camera, GPS capabilities, more memory, and the newest Blackberry software (version 5)."

And, to me, the convenience of removable storage--a flexibility and "consumer control" feature that control-freaks at Apple will never give us.

The genius of Apple comes from its visual designers and marketers, not its engineers.

The Storm has it all over iPhone.

You miss the point notmcCain.
The iPhone came first with the most.
a better screen and open source will overtake Apple eventually but for now, they are all imitations of life.

They need to be fired. Why would you demonstrate a new product that doesn't work? But on the story, I wish to god these phone makers would do as the expression goes, "DO YOU". With all this need to best the iPhone, there is not a lot of innovation going on. The iphone is done. Not even Apple can do anything more with it which is why with every breath the focus on selling stuff you don't need from that app store. Dang it, just do you Blackberry, Samsung, Microsoft etc. Do you! sheesh.

And this just in: The iPhone still can't touch the G1/Mytouch! Oh wait, that's a bad story, cause it'll set the Apple zom.bies off.

JOOOBBBBSSSSS!!!!!!!

IIIIPPPPOOOOODDDDDSSSSS!!!!!

Actually, I am a fan of Apple products.

Frankly, I am glad to see more of these phones coming out, regardless of the manufacturer. It is good for the industry, good for competition, and good for the consumer. If phones like the G1, iPhone, and Storm make other companies build a better telephone, then more power to them.

I have an iPhone. My co-worker just got the Mytouch. He is still jealous of me.

Apple has always had an intuitive nature that just makes their products easier to use.

HA HA HA................Very funny..............I could use the $'s..................... but I really do love this phone.

It just takes some patience when you first get it. I never have to reboot it which I have heard is a problem. My Storm just works very very well.

Very very funny BUT I have the Storm I and absolutely love it. Have had mine since July and would not trade it for any other phone. Took some time to set up email accounts, added my music, downloaded free ringtones from Crackberry, and added photos. Could not do without it now..................

Yo, Blackberry Storm I'm really happy for you, and I'm going to let you finish but a Jailbroken iphone is the greatest phone ever.

Why do Blackberry phones take so long to boot? My Blackberry Pearl takes about 2 minutes. The Storm 2 in this video took about 2 minutes. In sharp contrast, my Macbook running Sabayon Linux takes about 30 seconds to boot from a mechanical disk drive. That is one of my main gripes against Blackberry, and it seems to still be there.

It is due to hardware, and memory. Blackberries also do not have to rebooted as often as other phones.

The iPhone has become the Sarah Palin of cell phones, all hype and no substance. The most overrated phone in history. I'd admit the first Storm was a disaster but this phone is legit. It does everything and more than what the iPhone can do. All you iPhone fanboys wouldnt be so quick to judge if you weren't so threaten.

Threatened? Not me. I have both, one issued by the company, one I bought. I have the Curve, not the Storm, which I thought was junk. The Curve is nice for email, but not as much fun to use as the iPhone. I'd much rather watch videos on the iPhone; same with the music.

I have Verizon with the Curve, AT&T for the iPhone, and I don't notice much difference, but I am almost always near an urban area so I can't comment on rural areas and in the Rocky Mountain states.

Apple got it right the first time, RIM did not, with the Storm anyway. But, go ahead, enjoy your Blackberry. I'm not saying that sarcastically, either.

Funny thing is, everyone I know that has a Blackberry, has the Curve, not the Storm.

You "Berries" are STILL on the OUTSIDE when it comes to APPLE!!!.
Apple, HISTORICALLY, has created a SYSTEM that works, IMac, , IPod, iPhone, iLife, ITunes etc, etc, etc.

Translation: Apple constricts user flexibility in order to continue to grossly overcharge for products whose functions can be obtained elsewhere at a significantly lower price (and often with larger storage capacity)..

I am sure you never used iLife 08. iTunes is incredibly buggy on Windows, iPods used to have the most ridiculous failure rate ever, iPod touches can occasionally explode, white Macbooks have a design flaw where the front starts to crack off, and a lot of other issues. Oh yeah, guest accounts on Snow Leopard also like to cannibalize its own data... Learn about computers babe.

The world shouldn't have had to wait for Apple to change the game with a superior device and an App store, but Blackberry, with its massive head start, rested on its fat corporate behind. Lets face it, as lame as it is, you Blackberry users still wouldn't have your app store if it wasn't for Apple.

Credit where credit is due. Apple changed everything. And even the Blackberry users benefited.

That's when you know Apple hit one out of the park.
