I find homemade skin care recipes to be a fantastic way to take care of the skin and save money. An added benefit are organic ingredients that provide the best nourishment.

My all time favorite is brown sugar scrub because it is cheap to make, it is a great moisturizer, and removes the dead skin cells leaving the skin smooth. Here's my favorite recipe:

Almond oil sugary scrub

Ingredients

* 2/3 cup Brown Sugar
* 1/2 Cup Sweet Almond Oil
* 10 Drops Vitamin E
* 10 Drops Essential oil/Fragrance Oil

Preparation

Mix oil, vitamin E and essential oil or fragrance oil in a bowl. Add sugar and mix well. Divide into containers.

An easy, 5-minute investment for great, lasting results. It doesn't get easier than this!

For dry skin I make a salve with olive oil, an infusion of chickweed, and beeswax. the chickweed helps heal the skin and it works to stop itching. I put a half once of chickweed into two pints of olive oil and warm mixture at about 150 degress for three hours. I drain out the chickweed leaves and put enough beeswax in to harden the mixture to about an ointment state. This is the only thing that works for my dry skin. The Dermatologists didn't help at all, in fact when I went to them my dry skin was only the size of a silver dollar. What they gave me gave me a rash that covered a quarter of my body. Only by stopping their treatment and using this salve was I able to get it under control.

One thing to be aware of with DIY home made beauty products (which work BEAUTIFULLY for the record if you think through your needs appropriately), is that there is an environmental impact of what you use.

If you live in upstate NY and are using lemon, or bananas (both very popular in home made beauty recipes) they have to be produced and shipped from a long way. Replace your lemon with a locally made (or home made!) vinegar if you need something acidic, and banana with a locally grown pumpkin base. (buy and cook down your pumpkin in the fall, then freeze it in muffin tins so you have handy smaller amounts to work with.. One large pumpkin makes plenty of base for the year).

:)
(disclaimer, this link is my website, natural home made beauty products are a topic near and dear to my heart, but I don't make money off it) More things to think about and use can also be seen here: www.damnedsexyhippy.com
