STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — An autumn storm brought snow to parts of Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey, the earliest snow on record in some towns used to harsh winters.

Cornell University weather scientists say the snow that started Thursday set records for the earliest date with an inch of snow in Binghamton, Ithaca and Olean in New York and Altoona and State College in Pennsylvania.

The National Weather Service says there's 4.5 inches of snow in State College, Pa., and 2 more inches are possible through Saturday morning.

Port Allegany in northwestern Pennsylvania and Perrysburg in western New York both got more than 3 inches of snow. Most areas east of Lake Erie and parts of northwestern New Jersey got 2 inches or less.

Many other places got only rain.

Yesterday, October 17, we tied the record high in Phoenix of 102 degrees. Here, the temperature is well into the 90s until the first week of November.

In what may seem counterintuitive, I can't wait until I retire so I can get out of here.

about 15 years ago, snow on October 3 devastated the trees here in Columbia county NY. So, there are always early snows. Actually, it can snow when it is warmer than a cold snap. Snow is not an indicator of [global] cooling. The ice caps are melting; the glaciers are disappearing worldwide. and the trend lines for fall tree changing go up in altitude due to warming on a large scale. Plotting temperatures show a consistent slope upward, given the yearly variations. Sorry, global warming is sadly a fact. and those that deny it and prevent planning to deal with it are going to cause tremendous suffering for our children and grandchildren - all for some short turn [maybe] profit.

Global warming is causing this. If not for global warming, we wouldn't be getting the cold so soon. because Global warming causes cold temperatures and such.

It was exactly a year ago that a high hill in Califon, NJ got 16 inches of very heavy snow, falling on the trees that still had all of their leaves. I was there, and watched it happen. So many trees came down that it took me 4 hours to drive 20 minutes to get home.
