FORT COLLINS, Colo. — By all accounts, Richard Heene is an unapologetic self-promoter who would pursue all sorts of off-the-wall stunts to get media attention. Flying saucers, mountaintop helicopter stunts, storm chasing, reality TV shows – no gag was beyond his limits.

But would he go so far as to hide his 6-year-old son in the rafters of his garage for five hours and make it seem like the boy floated away in a helium balloon?

It was a question being asked everywhere Friday, one day after the balloon drama unfolded live on television during a frenzied search before little Falcon Heene was found.

The sheriff's office said it does not believe at this point that the balloon episode was a stunt, but investigators planned to question the family again Saturday. Richard Heene denies that the events were a hoax, dismissing such allegations as "extremely pathetic."

Doubts surfaced after a series of bizarre TV interviews, including one on CNN in which Falcon Heene told his parents "you said we did this for a show" when asked why he did not come down from the garage rafters during the search.

The family made the rounds on the morning talk shows Friday, and little Falcon threw up during two separate interviews when asked why he hid.

Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden acknowledged that Falcon's comments on CNN had clearly "raised everybody's level of skepticism." But, he said, investigators had no reason to believe the whole thing was a hoax.

Alderden said the family seemed genuine during the panic, and he believed events could have unfolded just as they described: Falcon got frightened when his father scolded him for playing inside the balloon, and hid in the garage out of fear.

The sheriff said his office has been flooded with calls and e-mails about the matter. He added that officials "have to operate on what we can prove as a fact and not what people want to be done."

The sheriff was also asked about the sequence of events when the Heenes reported their child's disappearance to authorities. The Heenes called the FAA first, followed by a local TV station with a news helicopter, and then dialed 911. The sheriff said the TV station call made sense because the helicopter could have provided immediate assistance.

In the 911 call, the boy's mother, Mayumi Heene, told a dispatcher in a panicked voice that her child was in "a flying saucer." She sobbed and said, "We've got to get my son."

It was not the first time someone from the Heenes' home has dialed 911. A Colorado sheriff's deputy responded to a 911 hang-up in February at the home, hearing a man yelling and noticing Mayumi Heene had a mark on her cheek and broken blood vessels in her left eye. She said it was because of a problem with her contacts.

Richard Heene said he had been yelling because his children stayed up past their bedtime. The husband and wife said nothing had happened, and the deputy concluded he did not have probable cause to make an arrest.

If the balloon ordeal was a hoax, the parents could be charged with making a false report to authorities, a low-level misdemeanor, Alderden said.

He said authorities would need to bring a criminal case before attempting to recoup restitution costs for the thousands of dollars spent to search for the boy, an effort that involved military helicopters, a ground rescue and even a mounted posse. Officials also rerouted planes around the balloon's flight path and briefly shut down Denver International Airport.

Deputies searched the family's home and considered going into the attic, but they "just didn't think it was possible that 6-year-old boy would be able to get up to that space, so they didn't look there," Alderden said.

While the balloon was in the air, the sheriff's department reached out to a university professor who determined that a balloon of that size would support a child the size of Falcon, Alderden said. The balloon could probably handle a payload of about 80 pounds. The child weighed 37 pounds.

A video of the balloon launch shows the family counting down in unison, "3,2,1," before Richard Heene pulls a cord, setting the silvery craft into the air.

"Whoa!" one of the boys exclaims. Then his father says in disbelief, "Oh, my God!" He then says to someone, "You didn't put the (expletive) tether down!" And he kicks the wood frame that had held the balloon.

Richard Heene's actions have drawn scrutiny and puzzlement on many occasions in recent years. He has worked as a storm chaser, a handyman and a contractor, and an aspiring reality-TV star.

He and his family appeared on the ABC reality show "Wife Swap," receiving no more than a few thousand dollars for each show, according to a person familiar with the production. The person requested anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak publicly.

In addition, the producer of "Wife Swap" said that it had a show in development with the Heenes but that the deal is now off. The producer did not provide specifics. TLC also said Heene had pitched a reality show to the network months ago, but it passed on the offer.

Barb Slusser Adams, who along with Heene and another man worked on a proposed show called "The Science Detectives," said she became used to his relentless attempts to get media attention for the program, which never aired. Heene described the show on his MySpace page as a documentary series "to investigate the mysteries of science."

Slusser said one of Heene's publicity ideas involved going at dawn to the top of a mountain with her and an associate from the show. They would be clad in black attire similar to that worn by characters in the "Matrix" movies, "and the helicopter would come by and strafe us or whatever," Slusser said. She and the associate said "absolutely not."

Slusser said Heene approached ABC to be on "Wife Swap" in an attempt to promote "The Science Detectives." She said Heene included her in his pitch to be on "Wife Swap" without her knowledge, describing her as a family friend who could be on the show.

Actor-comedian Perry Caravello said he met Heene back in the early 1990s, when Heene was struggling in Hollywood. Caravello said Heene rented out a room at the Comedy Store, and he and a handful of comedians performed, but that the event was a "total bomb."

The two worked on a couple of construction jobs before Heene approached Caravello about storm chasing. "He wanted to ride a motorcycle into the middle of a tornado. It was stupid, out-of-the-world stuff."

The sheriff said that because of the "magnitude" of the balloon event, his office contacted social workers, but investigators asked them not to speak to the Heenes until the family has talked to authorities again.

Maj. Justin Smith of the sheriff's office said social workers were asked to get involved because of concerns about the family's storm-chasing. He said authorities want to make sure the children are in a healthy environment.

On Friday, dozens of journalists were parked in front of the family home. At times, two of the boys could be seen playing in the backyard and peeking through windows at the scene on the street. One of the boys, Ryo, would occasionally crack open the door and tell journalists that the family was not talking today.

"My dad said he's tired of this show," the boy said.

I caught 3 boys IN MY GARAGE FRIDAY-looking in my CAR WINDOWS-2 more were hanging around back at the edge of the trees.....They RAN OFF as I came out my door-I'm 62 and slightly disabled....I called the 911 and it took 25 minutes to arrive and get descriptions from me...And i was told "He would check it out"...

Isn't there a "parable" about a "boy who cried Wolf?"

I'm sure these folks will feel differently WHEN-NOT IF-due to the "values" of these PARENTS.....
.....these folks TRULY do have a problem?!....

They should have to RE-PAY ALL COSTS INCURRED IN THE PERPETRATION OF THIS HOAX!!!!!!!!

I can't sit here and question if the parents are guilty of extorting their own children in this game. Because as long as the child is safe, then it's the same old news of the 21st century.

Hoax or not, we keep reciting and regurgitating the same bs about the Heenes - and this is exactly how they want us to react. They're selling and we are buying their story, hoax or not...

The media and reality shows have grown to be so blatantly naked and stupid that not a stitch of moral, ethics or decencies remain.

What's even worse, there is no accountability either...

Another thought. I don't see how he could have thought the boy was onboard at all because it is CLEAR from the takeoff video that there is NO BASKET attached to that balloon at all.

After seeing that tape, I am now of the opinion that the balloon really DID fly away by accident. The father was very angry. And I imagine that balloon cost him a pretty penny.

I think Richard was also really worried that it was going to cause a plane crash or other air disaster. Hence his first call being to the FAA and NOT 911, which would have been a more logical call for most people if their son was in trouble.

I am interested in finding out whether he mentioned his boy right away to the FAA or if the call was just about the craft.

That said I still think the part about the boy being airborne was a hoax.

I would not be surprised if Richard and the family cooked up the boy-in-the-balloon scam AFTER-the-fact as a way of potentially making some money to recoup their now lost investment and futhering their career in show business. Using a crisis to its fullest by killing two birds with one stone.

From the moment I heard about it on the radio in the car, I knew this was all a big publicity stunt. These people must be held accountable for whatever resources were used in furthering their stunt.

This police dept sounds like the Keystone Cops. All bumbling and ignorant.

a. They didn't completely search the property (How do they find their criminals?)

b. They report to the world that the child was in the balloon.

c. They did a poor job of getting info from the parents or children. (Anyone
questioning the older boy for 10 minutes probably could have got it out of
him that he was not sure if Falcon was there.,

d. They could not figure out that the balloon could not hold a 6 year
old's weight. An intelligent conversation with the dad who constructed
it, should have been able to conclude that it was not possible.

I think that they are trying to cover up their own incompetence and
ineptness by denying that it was a hoax.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:01 PM on 10/16/2009

a. the crawl space did not appear to be accessible or able to house the child - the older boys made many suggestions of where Falcon was known to play and hide, the attic space in the garage was not one of them.

b. The first call the parents made was to the media, the 3rd call they made was too police. The story hit the AP without help for law enforcement

c. Law enforcement and friends and neighbors spoke with all of the Heene's over the 5 hour ordeal and NO-ONE was able to get additional info from either of the boys.

d. After consulting a university professor and other experts, it was determined that it was possible for the aircraft to carry 80 lbs - the boys weight is 37 lbs

The police are not denying or confirming that this was a hoax and would be highly irresponsible in doing publicly without proof. It would also hinder their ability to speak with the family members again, thus hindering their investigation.

If my child is ever in peril, I hope that the police put all their efforts into the safe recovery of my child and ask questions about how and why after she's safe.

Why don't you try reading the whole article before commenting on it? Just a thought.

But only as far as 20-30 ft off the ground. NOT 1000s of feet.

This story struck me as fishy the second I heard he was hiding in the attic the whole time. Any parent who honestly thought their child was missing would tear that house apart searching for them, even if his brother said he was somehow in the balloon. Now that we know for a fact that his dad is the one who released the balloon just makes it worse. A lot more is gonna come out over the next few days.

Btw is this bad parenting week or something? That mom who let her stroller roll onto train tracks while she was primping is giving balloon dad a run for the money. I think I need to call my parents and thank them for being normal. :)

2 reasons why child services should get involved

1) This child is terrified of his father.
2) the child is extremely underweight if that is reported correctly

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:44 PM on 10/16/2009

Seriously, how afraid of parents to you have to be to hide in small dark crawl space for 5 hours. I ran away when I was about his age to get out trouble, made 3 blocks, got hungry, bored then scared and came home. I think I was gone 30 minutes. It seemed like forever.

A 3rd reason for SS to get involved is the storm chasing with the kids. Scary stuff -

I'm no expert, but isn't 37 lbs a pretty average weight for a six year old?

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:46 PM on 10/16/2009

My daughter just turned 7 in Sep and she's 55 lbs and most of her pants need a belt or some altering - she's a skinny minnie -

That said he didn't look too thin - even after throwing up twice on the tele

My goodness, Richard Heene is the new Kate Gosselin. He's more than willing to exploit his kids for $$$ and he really, really wants his own reality TV show, just like Kate and Jon - grifters both.

C'mon, TLC honchos --- give Mr. Heene a chance! He'll be a tabloid sensation!

As the day has gone on and more news outlets have reported on the Life & Times of Richard Heene, it's difficult not to conclude that something doesn't seem right about this entire incident. If Heene was interested in this 'flying saucer' stuff as a hobby, his denials (and the accompanying faux outrage) would be plausible. But this guy apparently can't get a real job, so he's been beating the bushes for a fast-track to stardom and easy money. The multiple videos at YouTube (check out his monologue about Brittany Spears' boobs, ha!) show a no-talent egotist; the clips from "Wife Swap" show a lazy, controlling bully; and the boys aren't three little shrinking violets either. And while this may be a petty observation, how come Richard has the styled haircut and Mayumi obviously hasn't seen the inside of a salon in years? Richard Heene has CREEP all over him and I wouldn't believe a word that comes out of his mouth. As for the initial 911 call, these parents met at an acting school. They're ACTING!

"He seems self-centered and controlling" Hehehe! You do realize that all parents are human and many are self-centered and controlling? hehe! I can't stop laughing at your ignorance.

I also saw the father break down and hug him tighter with Falcon in his arms as he was speaking to the media after the boy was found. You must have missed that one.

Good. The authorities need to do a more thorough investigation. And I couldn't disagree with you more about this father. He seems self-centered and controlling. He kids are merely pawns that he uses to fulfill his own selfish ambitions. Watch Falcon during the interview with Wolff Blitzer on CNN. He could hardly sit still. You mean to tell me that he hid for 3 hours in the attic despite everyone calling his name (allegedly). That was planned. They probably had food and games up there. What a joke and how sad for these kids.

This is one strange family. One point yesterday we were trying to decide if the boy had some sort of developmental issue. Anyway, the sheriff is being nice about the whole thing but I do think that the even if it wasn't a deliberate hoax the parents were irresponsible in making sure that their son wasn't hiding before calling authorities. The dad made no safe guards to keep his children away from that ridiculous floating UFO. At this point, enough with this story. I've hit overload.

Or, possibly, Falcon really was hiding up there for three hours because he's just that scared of his dad. Either way, it doesn't speak well of the man.

continued...

Falcon said, "We did this for a show." He's six years old and makes this statement as he's being filmed and interviewed for television. Those who have children themselves or have worked with children understand how he could imagine this.

Arianna Huffington was right. This family needs to be LEFT ALONE! They asked for help for something that they thought was extremely dangerous and life threatening for their son. Everyone behaved as they should. But now, it's time for the rest of the world, especially the media, to do the same.

He explores science with his sons!!! Does anyone realize know how cool that is?

Oh please, chasing tornadoes with his six-year-old in tow--without any formal degree or training--is not "cool" or being a good parent, it's *reckless*. He isn't a scientist, he trained to be an actor, and failed.

Taking his kids to chase storms is NOT cool.

But TEACHING THEM ABOUT SCIENCE IS COOL!

Read it loud!!
