The country was riveted yesterday as cable news networks cut away from the president's discussion of rebuilding New Orleans to cover the "balloon boy"--a 6-year-old who was thought to have been aboard a run-away helium balloon. Of course, it turns out the boy was not aboard the balloon at all, but instead hiding inside a cardboard box in his family's attic. This bizarre series of events led to a lot of late night humor, and quicky Web jokes.

You know what is crazier than the media spending a day on the boy who wasn't in the balloon? The alternative media spending the next 3 days talking about the media talking about this.

It's not like this isn't the way the media has always been - going back to Floyd Collins, continuing on through Baby Jessica in the well.

1. The balloon/craft/spaceship/extra-terrestrial did fly

2. The family isn't saying much; seem to be 'spewing more' than talking

3. The children seem dazed and confused

4. The dad was involved with questionable youtube vids concerning mars anomalies

5. BARACK Obama was in the middle of 'Fired up, Ready to Go' - and taking questions from the audience. One concerned child is famous now for asking why 'are you hated so much?' of the president. His answer is was charming, in my opinion.

6. The major networks and this site could be more concerned about facts and journalism but that does not sell ad revenue. Boys who are 'different' and have 'out there' dads with kinky sexual bedroom desires do.

7. Barack Obama is meeting with George Herbert Walker Bush and Jr. Bush today in Texas - the 'balloon boy' (such derogatory terms fly from the mouths of teabaggers and such) will not be attending.

8. The sun did shine again today. That is all.

Seriously I don't understand 1/2 the garbage you print in your 'newspaper' sometimes. We have a picture of a balloon with a large red FAIL across the face. The doggone thing went 50 miles with nothing really to generate reconstituted or piped in air and you call that a failure? Where exactly are you establishing or setting the bar when it comes to editorial review or acuracy. By what guidelines do you use to deem something worthy in your eyes? When you can answer that for the audeince I will comment with a little bit more clarity and actually compliment you when you do well.

I love portabella mushrooms properly sauteed in a non stick plan and add them to my Paul Newman Sockarooni spaghetti sauce all the time - but this is taking things too far.

The worrying thing is not whether it was a planned hoax, but that the media reported it as a flying boy story despite obvious live video evidence to the contrary.

Thanks. I turned this one off when they reported the reality show angle. Note to advertizers: I turn the channel every time it comes on.

Everybody else please do the same. We can't be this stupid, surely.

You are all kidding, right? Pulling a stunt like this as a hoax would probably be a federal crime, could have gotten someone ki lled in some sort of rescue attempt, and would make the family potentially liable for hundreds of thousands of dollars in diverted air resources and rescue personnel.

I'm not sure anyone is that dumb. But here on HP we have what seem to be the usual con dullards who pretend to see through it all. They couldn't see through Bush's Iraq scam, of course, but now we're supposed to believe they are these perceptive, coldly realistic types, when they have nary two brain cells to rub together.

Hey dullards. You know nothing about this.
