We love to think of ourselves as kings and queens of the jungle, but there are many dangerous and deadly animals out there who kill humans -- intentionally or not. Take a peek at these predators, many of whom have been largely misunderstood and have dangerous encounters with people because we've driven out their prey.

Vote for who you think is the scariest!

Great White Shark

A number of great white attacks happen every year in the United States. But the great white shark is largely misunderstood: the sharks do not intend to hunt people. Attacks happen accidentally when a baby great white mistakes a wet-suited surfer for a seal.

"Attacks happen accidentally when a baby great white mistakes a wet-suited surfer for a seal."

What twit wrote that? There's no evidence that great white attacks come from "babies." The 16-footer that killed the swimmer near San Diego last year was certainly no juvenile.

It might be strange, but I find great white sharks beautiful and majestic, not to mention powerful!

Humans are the only thing I really fear. Everything else operates within species appropriate behavior.

"We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate for having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein do we err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with the extension of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings: they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth." -henry beston

Anything that can eat me or poison me is definitely on my "stay away from" list.

Very interesting thread.

Man is of course the deadliest, not because of physical superiority to other predators, but because of weaponry which gives all the advantage in encounters with wild animals, many of whom are being driven to extinction. And because of man's inhumanity to man.

I don't experience fear, but more like a heightened awareness when walking in the areas here where I know there is a healthy population of Mountain Lions.

I respect ALL life, and will kill nothing except, OK, mosquitoes and ticks which carry some pretty serious diseases.

as a surfer on the west coast it has to be the shark or as he is referred to by us longboarders, "the man in the grey suit." Quint was right.
