Actors Playing Strippers: Who Takes Their Clothes Off Like A Pro? (PHOTOS)

Onscreen stripteases are generally memorable, whether they are worthy of an Oscar nod (Marisa Tomei in 'The Wrestler') or become the stuff of mockery ('Showgirls').

The latest actress to take it off in the name of her craft is Susan Sarandon's daughter Eva Amurri, whose role as a stripper has had her naked on Showtime's 'Californication' the past two Sundays.

Who has the best stripper performances and who should have just kept his or her clothes on? You decide.

No love for Lolita Davidovich in "Blaze"? Not only was she great, but the film told a classic story of sex and politics with Paul Newman (RIP) as LA Governor Earl Long.

For n old fashioned strip no one beats Natalie Wood in "Gypsy". Of course, there's always Rita Hayworth and her "Put The Blame On Mame" number from "Gilda". She didn't have to strip all the way way even if they couldn't have filmed that when the film was made. Just tossing off that glove and that zipper bit at the end of the number was enough.

Footnote: There's a story about the making of that scene. When Hayworth had a a difficult time getting into the number the director took her aside and said, "Just take off that glove as if you're peeling off a condom Rita", and did she ever!!!!!!­!!!!!!!!!!­!!!!!!

Marissa Tomei was the most convincing, but I'd vote for Vivica A. Fox in Independence Day. No nudity, but incredibly hot!

And Sheila Kelly for Blue Iguana (she taught the other actresses how it's done).

Eva Amurri is the only reason I have Showtime. When I heard she was going to appear nude in Californication, I became a subscriber!

Otherwise, this is a pretty weak list, since Eva, Elizabeth Berkeley, and Jessica Biel are the only actresses who actually whip 'em out. For an actress to play a stripper without taking off her top is like someone playing a cowboy without riding a horse or firing a gun. What is the point?

I have to agree with that. The worst offender is Demi Moore. I mean a lot of these examples are actresses playing strippers in movies that have nothing to do with stripping, so who really cares. But I don't know where anyone gets off making an R rated movie about stripping that involves no actual stripping. That should be considered false advertising.

I have seen less than half these films. And, of those I have seen the scenes where the actors stripped didn't strike me as either memorable or realistic.

A long time ago Shirley Maclaine appeared in a movie where she worked in a sex bar, "Sweet Charity".

Much of that film is not memorable. But there is one performance in it -- "Hey big spender" -- which is very memorable. The dancers are all lined up, wearing stage make-up that seen up close is kind of frightening. They were directed to look as bored, joyless, and alienated as possible. The camera dollies slowly past each blank face as they funerally chant,

"How's about a few .... laughs"
"How about a little .... fun"

I think this brief scene is the most accurate at conveying how most sex workers really feel about their jobs.

Well, it wasn't a sex bar but a dance club, at least in the show the film was based on. The original story though was filmed as "The Nights Of Cabiria", an italian film and I don't remember if the Sweet Charity character was a prostitute or not. These were dancehall girls, used up with very little to look forward to. The film was lousy., The stage production was something else thoygh and Gwen Verdon (Bob Fosse's former wife) was brilliant in the role of Charity, although Chita Rivera who was a far better dancer also played in the musical on stage and film and even played the Charity part when Verdon was out sick in the stage version.) You paid for example 25 cents to dance with one of these women but the sexual content and highlight of the "Big Spender" number was very apparent because the choreographer was Bob Fosse, who grew up working in strippetease theaters. Most of his dances were very sexually oriented, even in 'Little Me". When I worked worked summer stock years ago a road show company of "Little Me" played at the theater and although everything was supposed to have been worked out beforehand, a few of the chorus girls blushed like crazy whenever they had to perform a number where they held their arms straight out and bumped in a straight line behind each other from one end of the stage to the other.
