How can I degrade you - Let me count the ways.

Our dog loved the attention my kids gave her when they played with her. Sure, she tolerated some embarrassing moments, but nothing and no one hurt her ever.

Please direct your "cruel to animals" energy to the homeless pets who wander the streets, the sheltered pets who NEED good homes AND to the organizations such as circuses, who use and exploit innocent animals for profit.

We never dressed our dog up, but if you put a bow around her neck, she shimmied around the room as if she were the prom queen. (She only wore the bow in the house and never for very long.)

Lighten up, folks. These animals are not suffering. Also it's highly unlikely they'll be sent out on their own in costumes to trick or treat. People who put their animals in costumes tend to be very loving owners in my experience working for a vet. I'd bet not one of these animals is left in the backyard without human contact for days on end. If you want to be outraged, even mildly, be outraged at the real abuse and neglect that's out there. Oh, and by the way. That little face of my avatar is my dog Candy and she LOVES to dress up. If she thinks you're going to put clothes on her, she gets all happy. The dangerous part is taking them off - she might snap. So let's all have some fun with the cute pics. These dogs are well loved. Save the outrage for the starving, abused and neglected ones.

I love my cats. They are an absolute treasure in my life. Only one of them would consent to wear a costume, because she likes attention. I wouldn't force the others into one. My grey tabby, however, would climb into it herself if it got her more attention and treats :).

The dogs in this picture are like my tabby. Most of them are pugs and chihuahuas. They are an extremely friendly breed of dog, and *want* to be noticed. Intelligent breeds get into everything and practically insist on being part of the show.

Dear Huff Post:

I understand it's almost Halloween and many are getting in the holiday spirit. Yet..... Dogs and cats do not like to wear costumes. They are uncomfortable, constrain their movements, and sometimes get tangled or accidentally ingest small bits of the costume.

If you really love your pet, please keep them at home on Halloween, au natural.

And please, Huff Post, no more "cute" costumed pets.

Most don't like to wear costumes, and you don't force them into one.

Some *do* though, because they like being the center of attention as much as some people do. You know if your furry friend is the type to enjoy it. Mine is a cat. She's the type who participates whether I want her to or not :).

I tried to put a red nose on my cat for red nose day when I was a kid...lets just say the only thing that was red after that was my arms.
