Obama Uses Facebook, Twitter To Advance Health Care Reform

President Obama used social networking to overwhelm Congress' phone lines Tuesday when he asked his thousands of followers on Facebook and Twitter to literally voice their support of health care reform by calling their representatives.

According to Obama's Web site, The Time to Deliver Event was arranged because:

After months of negotiations, the health reform debate is about to move to the full Congress for the first time. With the insurance industry lobby pulling out all the stops to derail progress, we need everyone who supports reform to weigh in.

President Obama joined an Organizing For America call party and then spoke directly to all the other events that evening via an live Webcast.

The event's goal, to set a new OFA record for calls to Congress placed or committed to in a single day was smashed easily halfway through the day as call numbers passed 100,000 and the President twittered a new target of 200,000 calls.

At 8:39 p.m. EST, @BarackObama confirmed that this goal had also been reached:
