Robert Mormando Says He's Gay: Mafia Hit Man Comes Out Of The Closet At Trial

A former mob hit man surprised a Brooklyn judge Monday by renouncing the Mafia -- and declaring that he's gay.

In a scene right out of The Sopranos, Robert Mormando came out of the closet while being sentenced for his part in the shooting of bagel store owner Angelo Mugnolo, who survived the attack.

Mormando turned government informant shortly after the botched hit.

The New York Daily News reports that although "Mormando's partner has refused to enter the witness protection program," they have relocated and according to Mormando's lawyer, they "live a peaceful working life."

Does this guy think he will get off easier (ha ha) if the judge knows he's gay? Maybe he's saying he was a more compassionate mobster. Maybe he is trying to explain that if he could have been open about his sexuality, he would have never become a member of the mafia in the first place.

I'm glad to read that the shooting victim lived. I hope his recovery is complete. Also of interest was the fact that it was Mormando's first shooting and he realized that such a life wasn't for him.
