Shouting from 30 feet away hardly qualifies as 'assailed'.

That's a good way to win friends and influence people on the world stage.

Regardless of what you all may think about Blair, he is still a world leader and deserves to be treated with respect. I can't imagine the ordinary British people are okay with this.

Okay, I get you.
It is all about acting on a stage.
We can all just go along with his act in pretending he was not a partner in extinguishing the lives of 1 million Iragi civilians.

It's not like I entirely disagree with you, but you know what the funny this is about democracies? Our leaders aren't kings, and the ordinary people are responsible for them as they are responsible for us. As easy and convenient as it is to simply dump all of the blame for the actions of the US and Britain onto one or two leaders...those one or two leaders could not have done it by themselves.

Sure, when a war turns bad we'll quickly turn on them and fuel all our anger and rage onto them. And they probably deserve it. But at the beginning there was a coalition, both among the nations who participated and among their citizens, was there not?

It's not like Blair did this all be himself. And when we start "assailing" people for taking actions that we disagree with, where does it end?

How many millions of innocent people in India, China, Africa (and many other areas of the world) were murdered by the British over the last 300-400 years?

You people tell me who are the real terrorists, thieves, and criminals.

With regards to the crown that Queen Elizabeth "proudly" wears, where did all that gold and diamonds and rubys come from?

The world knows the truth.

Like Bush and Cheney, Tony Blair should be charged with war crimes for his full support in the illegal invasion of the sovereign state of Iraq.

When there is real justice in this world, thats when there will be a real peace.

Um, if you're going to be getting on Britain's case for their actions of the past (which at this point none of the people alive were involved with), should we be throwing shoes at Germany's president because of the Holocaust? Or the leaders of Italy, Austria, Japan and the Palestinians because of their complicity with the Germans?

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:58 AM on 10/21/2009

“at this point none of the people alive were involved with”

When you find treasures belonging to the Anglo-Saxon era – as was the case recently --, you show it to the world as evidence of your civilization, but when you are presented with evidence of your past atrocities, the usual response is: “none of the people alive were involved with it”. I suppose the history of Britain starts with the date of your choosing.

To: Concerned USA citizen:
The British Empire will live in infamy among most if not nearly all peoples of the world; it is long gone & no one misses it. Even the British public was ill served by it as the Victorian Age fostered great disparities of incomes & standards of living. Just as the American public likewise has not been well served by the war-making, one-sided foreign policy of our leaders. Bush, & Cheny, Blair may hope to repair their reputations, but the general public is not so easily fooled. In the case of Blair, his continuing partisanship toward the Israelis will insure that the mess created so long ago will continue. Blair won't be the first leader to have his hopes dashed in Palestine by backing the familiar vested interests.

The great disparities of income came through the industrial revolution, rather than the Empire, luckily as the first industrialised nation (something that were far more proud of than the empire, which is never mentioned) others were able to learn from our mistakes, and to all those Americans whining about the empire, you are the greatest colonialists, living in the
largest tract of stolen land on Earth.

Tony Blair is a great statemen's as PM and as a negotiator in the ME........it is obvious they cannot stop fighting amongst themselves in the disputed territories so they shout down and criticize the leader of a great country........hmmm, maybe they had better get their act in gear if they want to be a civilized state.

the British public would not agree with you at all Albert . . . he was the most unpopular PM in British modern history . .. he has been publicly rebuked by the Archbishop of Canterbury . . a soldier's father refused to shake his hand because he has blood all over it .. . and he sold the UK down the river when he backed the illegal invasion of Iraq . . . and he only got authorisation to do that by crawling to the Tories . . . Labour didn't give him enough support and the Lib Dems to a man voted against it . . . get your facts straight

Tony Blair parading himself as the Middle East peace envoy should be more insulting to Arabs than being thrown a shoe at. Here is the “Yo Tony” who stood side by side with President George Bush; refused to call on Israel to halt its air strikes against the Palestinians – he instead delayed things to give Israel enough time to complete its campaign against them, and Palestinian leaders are shaking hands with him?

He did nothing for peace in the Middle East when he was the British Prime Minister and had the power and influence (with President George Bush). And now with only an illusion of power, authority and and influence, these welcoming Arab leaders expect him to bring peace to the Middle East? Pigs will fly!

For a long time, Britain has gotten away with enormous crimes.

For example, it imposed opium addiction on China and fought a war to keep the Chinese addicted. Yet I'd bet that few people know about that, they've been much more successful with their PR efforts than Germany or Russia.

It's fallen on hard times now that its Empire evaporated, and serves as toady to its replacement oppressor, the US. Yes, fellow Americans, that's the role we're playing in the world.

Britain is responsible for, among, other things, the infamous Balfour Declaration that unilaterally declared that Palestine would host an imposed Jewish state, against the will of the inhabitants. So Blair is just carrying forward his predecessors' mission, cloaked in the garb of "peacemaker."

Retch.

"fallen on hard times" We've all fallen on hard times, including the US, and the UK still has the fourth, fith or sixth largest economy in the world (it keeps changing), with a population far smaller than those ahead of it, and after the decimation of the banking system.

As for the empire, it's gone, nobody mentions it, because nobody cares, except perhaps a few right wingers old enough to remember it.

Britain's loss of power is proportionately much more than what the US has lost so far. But give us time, Afghanistan beckons, Wall Street goes on unregulated, other nations run much more soberly are already setting up their alliances in anticipation of our shrinkage.

We'll end up like that diminutive twerp that runs France, a Rumpelstiltskin state shouting and waving its nuclear weapons as our people are reduced to Third World status by our elites.

Thats funny, People who have been invaded and occupied for decades, and who's land is being gradually stolen from them are called terrorists for fighting back, by people who's entire country was once invaded and occupied by the same country Tony Blair once led and were themselves denounced as "terrorists" by the red coats.

A prime minister who during his tenure took Britain into 4 conflicts, and was jointly responsible for the mess in Iraq and Afghanistan, a man who during his ten years on the world stage failed to achieve in the Occupied Territories. I think terrorist is not necessarily too strong a word.

Blair has yet to call out the IDF for its vicious attack on Gaza. He was notably silent about the '06 Israeli attack on Lebanon. His actions to safeguard the vested interests in the region do not speak to any real success he may achieve in the future. When you underwrite state terror by NOT speaking against its most egregious examples, you are not going to be respected by anyone in the region EXCEPT your best friend.

Blair did "call out" those responsible for both the Gaza and Lebanon war. That would be the totalitarians called Hezbollah and Hamas. His attempt to "safeguard the vested interests" of democracy, tolerance, and freedom is something I admire.

Hey jerry - got a few more funnies for you - you'll love 'em!
The father of a son killed in Iraq refused to shake Blair's hand at a service in London last week telling Blair 'you have my son's blood on your hands'.
He took the Uk to a highly contentious war - at the behest of others and fake intelligence - in Iraq. Nearly forgot the punchline - it was against the wishes of the British people.
Great eh? Oooops - and funny!!!!!!
And then there was the moment of pure comical genius whn - after 2 years in the job as ME Peace envoy - he visited Gaza because he had to!!!!!
But what about the 1 million dollar award for Peace from the Israeli Government!!!!!!
And he wants to be President of the EU -but not if a growing number of humourless individuals get their way. Booo.
I know jerry - my sides are splitting too!!!

let me use the language of 10 year olds.

there are 3 religions that reside within historical palestine (the river to the sea).

one of these religious groups controls the other 2 religious groups by force using racist apartheid tactics in clear violation of international laws.

Your patient negotiation is allowing Israel to steal Palestine. Perhaps you should ask your Israeli friends to finally make concessions, instead of allowing the country you helped to continue with the terrorism they began with. And Blair, didn't your mother ever tel you that you will be identified by who your friends are? If you hang around with Israel then you will be a terrorist just like them.
