Grayson

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL), who launched himself into the heat of the health care debate by arguing that Republican-styled health care reform encouraged the sick to die quickly, once again is using the specter of death to push for legislative action.

The Florida Democrat announced, while on the floor of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, that he was launching a new website to list the names of the nearly 45,000 Americans who die every year because they lack health insurance.

The site, called namesofthedead.com, would honor the memories of the deceased, compel Congress to act on health care reform and, ultimately, serve as a "historical artifact" of the days when there was no universal coverage, Grayson said.

"I think it dishonors all those Americans who have lost their lives because they had no health coverage, by ignoring them, by not paying attention to them, and by doing nothing to change the situation that led them to lose their lives," the congressman explained. "So I make this simple proposal. I propose that we identify them. I propose that we honor their memory by naming them. They themselves can no longer speak. But their families, the ones who love them, they can speak. And so I have established a website called namesofthedead.com."

WATCH:

By Wednesday afternoon the url was already live.

Grayson's new online venture may have the same explosive partisanship as his earlier speech from the House floor. But that might make the message a bit more effective. The Democratic Party has repeatedly used stories of people suffering from poor (or denied) insurance coverage as a means of selling the need for reform. The death toll of non-insured has really never been considered a viable political point (likely because of the sensitivities that come when referencing the dead). The fact, however, remains that 45,000 people in America do die from lack of health care insurance every year, according to a Harvard study -- and that does provide, at the very least, the most compelling argument for getting expansive reform done quickly.

UPDATE: It was easy to see this coming. TPM's Eric Kleefeld reports that the site quickly became the target of practical jokes with the names of the dead including: "Lassie Martin, 10, Kanab, UT" (aka the dog from the popular TV show), "Wile E. Coyote, 55, Sedona, Arizona," and (of course) "Hugh G. Reckshinn," age 44, from Dumas, Texas.

Grayson's office has since removed the automated list of names from the site.

Folks, I'm sorry to say that Mr. Grayson is merely trolling for campaign contributors with his plea for health care stories.

How do I know?

I instantly submitted a story to Mr. Grayson's site after learning about it on HuffPost yesterday. I told of my friend Russell, who died at age 34 of a heart attack that could've been prevented if he had adequate health care.

Today I received an email from Mr. Grayson's office asking for a campaign contribution.

I find his approach to collecting contributions very crass, especially given he didn't bother to address my friend's tragic death from lack of adequate health care, just as Mr. Grayson requested.

There are no people with a chance to get in office who are ethical, Mr. Grayson has again proven that to me. It's all about money and power, getting what you want on the backs and suffering of the public.

No thanks.

I plan to make campaign contributions for the first time. I do not want to give money to the national campaign committees, but I would like to support a progressive campaign fund. Any suggestions?

Funny how people hear a "fact" that fits their argument and run with it. Same thing with the 90% of guns in Mexico deal. Say it over and over and it becomes real. Anybody know where that 45,000 people figure comes from? It must be right because it says "Harvard Study." It couldnt be that it came from a physician group dedicated to single payer. And that they estimate that figure by asking only 9,000 if they had insurance, and somehow used those results to calculate 45,000 people die because they dont. Anybody with any evidence that this number is accurate, please provide it.

Representative Grayson is my Congressman (FL-8) I wish he would change to Independent he is to good to be a democrat and so far above repugs. The Florida repugs have to import a carpetbagger candidate from Southern Florida to run against him in 2010.

I am so impressed with this guy, as well as Howard Dean - this is my message to both of them: Please run in 2012Presidential race, Congressman Grayson - team up with Howard Dean - you two could do it!!! We need some fearless leaders who won't blink when it comes to standing up for American citizens, what's going on now is ludricous. I will not vote Democratic again if we don't get a Public Option - and not a watered down fake one either, and I will work tirelessly to get rid of the Dems we have now if we get shafted, again. If they can't do what they were elected to do, with the majority they have now, then they should leave. All the Dems should understand - they will lose a lot of support if this continues.

I admit I haven't seen the website but it might have more punch if it had a picture of the deceased to go along with the name and a short biography like age and cause of death. It would be a jolt to see that many people died from treatable ailments and conditions.

What about a website listing people who have gone bankrupt due to medical costs? Or have been turned down with "pre-existing conditions"?

I like to think that I am reasonably well-informed, but this guy has absolutely been under my radar until recently. This is the kind of elected official our party needs so many more of. I never thought I'd want to send some cash to a Florida politician, but here he is. If you're progessive and agree, please let him know we support him all across the US.

Give the man kudos for at least speaking to the issue and recognizing the problem.

It's so odd to see a Florida representative on the correct side of an issue for once. And Rep, Connie Mack can't even name how many Floridians are without health insurance. Goes to show, Republican only see what they want to see. That's no way to govern.

Grayson is a great spokesman for his collectivist, fascist idea that individuals must give up their sovereignty so that government can "take care" of them.

I respect your right to die with having health care.

Typical bully - summing everything up neatly to a "name list" on a website.

Does this guy have a thought process?

He does, yes. On the other hand you demonstrate that you do not. How is distributing a list of people who die every year for lack of health care being a "bully". It is not. Your post makes no sense, no point made. Please think before posting, especially when commenting about another persons thought process.

Do you always sign your posts (ending them with 'Tool. ')?

It's sad that you consider 10s of thousands of people dying each year for no reason other than lack of health care to be a "joke". Another right wing American hater. I invite you to leave.

The only joke is that someone could actually buy into the 'honor' ploy with such a heated debate going on. You know when you inject emotion into and argument, it shows your desperation....so do personal insults.

Rep Grayson, thank you for using your voice. You have guts. Wish more Dems learnt to have a spine like you.
