PHILADELPHIA — Powered by Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth and all those other big bats, the Philadelphia Phillies are headed back to the World Series.

Werth hit two home runs, Shane Victorino and Pedro Feliz also connected and the defending champions beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-4 in Game 5 on Wednesday night to win their second straight NL pennant.

Brad Lidge closed it out and the Phillies became the first team to reach consecutive World Series since the New York Yankees in 2000-01.

Now, Jimmy Rollins and crew wait for their next opponent. They'll go for their third World Series title beginning next Wednesday night at New York or Los Angeles. The Yankees lead the Angels 3-1 in the ALCS, which resumes Thursday night at Angel Stadium.

Philadelphia overcame another shaky outing by 2008 NLCS and World Series MVP Cole Hamels.

Meanwhile, slugger Manny Ramirez, manager Joe Torre and the rest of the Dodgers go home after leading the NL with 95 wins in the regular season and sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals in the division series.

Los Angeles closed to 9-4 in the eighth, but Ryan Madson escaped a bases-loaded jam by striking out Russell Martin and retiring Casey Blake on a grounder to shortstop.

After beating Tampa Bay in last year's World Series, the Phillies are trying to become the first repeat champions from the NL since the Cincinnati Reds in 1975-76. The Yankees were the last team to win consecutive titles when they captured three in a row from 1998-2000.

Andre Ethier, James Loney and pinch-hitter Orlando Hudson hit solo homers for the Dodgers, who also lost to the Phillies in five games in last year's NLCS.

Five pitchers tossed 4 2-3 strong innings in relief of an ineffective Hamels, who hasn't been the dominant ace he was last postseason. Chad Durbin earned the win by retiring all four batters he faced, including Ramirez representing the tying run in the fifth.

Lidge, who has bounced back from a rough season with a 0.00 ERA during the playoffs, worked a scoreless ninth.

Hamels allowed three runs and five hits in 4 1-3 innings. Still, he got a standing ovation on his way to the dugout.

Vicente Padilla, the former Phillie who was excellent in his first two playoff starts, lasted just three-plus innings and gave up six runs.

The teams combined to tie the record of seven homers in a postseason game. It was the fifth time that's happened.

Once considered the NL's laughingstock, the Phillies have been thinking dynasty since riding down Broad Street on flatbed trucks during the city's first championship parade in 25 years last October.

As Barry Larkin said on MLB, "The team, the team, the team. That is what the Phillies are all about, and there is no club in baseball that plays as together as them."

Fightins' in five.

I think a sports section would be great! HuffPost is as popular as most newspapers around the country. It's where a lot of people get their news. A sports page would only enhance that. I just wrote an article: (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/joan-e-dowlin/lifes-lessons-the-phillie_b_329607.html ) called "Life's Lessons the Phillies Can Teach Us." It was placed in the Entertainment section but it would be cool if sports fans could find it more easily.

Was kind of hoping we'd face Torre in the series - how weird and emotional would that be? - but as I hate the Phillies with a passion, I am looking forward to mercilessly crushing them as well.

YANKEES!!!

I'm so tired of the "Eagles Fans Boo Santa" story being trotted out by uninformed nabobs every time they want to diss Philly and its fans. Here's what really happened

On December 15, 1968 it was the last game of a pitiful season for the Eagles. At this point they were 2 -11, and they were set to play Minnesota, and snow had been falling steady since the night before. Wind gust were up to 30 mph and the temp was about 22 degrees.

A Christmas pageant was scheduled for halftime, the Eagles cheerleaders were dressed in elf costumes and a 50 piece band was to play carols while Santa paraded around the field in a sleigh. There were a few problems however, after 15 hours of snow it turned out that the guy hired to play Santa at the Stadium couldn't make it through the snow, the powers that be had to find a stand in.

Enter 5'6", 170 lb. Frank Olivo, he was sitting in the stands wearing a corduroy Santa suit. When Olivo took the field the fans got their first glimpse of a disheveled looking Santa , who also appeared to be drunk, so they started booing him. Olivo, a true Philadelphia fan, egged the booers on asking for more.

Howard Cosell's sports show on on ABC weekend report picked up the story and showed it nationwide. giving Philly the reputation it still holds to this day.

Can we agree that since 2001 Joe torre is the most over rated indiivdual in baseball, if not in all sports?

Despite Steinbrener opening up the checkbook and having the highest payrol in MLB, since 2001 Torre has always been the bridesmaid.

After watching this series with the Phils it seems like Torre may have lost the ability to keep players disciplined and focused.

I never understood what the guy did in NY. Every time you saw a picture of him, up by ten runs or down by ten runs, same gum chewing stone face.

I think in NY he became a sentimental favorite because of being in the WS right after 9/11 and having cancer.
But after the way the Dbacks in 2001 then the Red Sox in 2004 embarressed him, I was glad to see him go and glad to see he still can't close the deal.

And I say sports section for Huffpo YES!

Some wag on the radio this morning said:

Media wise Joe Torre's worse day as a Dodger manager is still better than his best day as a Yankee manager in Spring Training.

It is said about Phillies fans that they are the worst in baseball perhaps in all of sports. They booed Mike Jack Schmidt from time to time but I heard that they also booed Santa Claus once. . .

But here's the truth folks: The Yankees Win. Thuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuh Yankeeeees wiiiin!

They booed a drunk guy dressed up like Santa Claus who was being a complete mor.on.

The Phillies fans are among the most knowledgeable in baseball and we LOVE our team.

I think the record this year in Yankees stadium was 2 wins for the Phils and 1 for the Yankees. Interesting, huh?

History in baseball is like ice in a frying pan. What are you going to do walk DJ and A-Rod every time they get up??? Even the milkman is tearing it up. They're on fire my friend and Yankee pitching I think combined ERA is around 2. . . CC vs Blanton? Mariano vs Lidge? pffffft. Rollins strike 3. Victorino Strike 3 Utley strike 3. Next inning: Howard strike 3 looking . . . Bye bye. Thuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuh Yankeeeeees wiiiiin!
