'Get A Mac': Apple Ads Slam Windows 7, PCs (VIDEO)

First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 03:25 PM ET

Get A Mac

Windows 7 was just released, and Apple's already trying to take the wind out of its sails (and sales) with several ads it's just launched attacking the new OS.

There are three new "Get A Mac" commercials, each of which pair the familiar "PC and Mac" duo: the stodgy, suit-and-tie "PC" next to "Mac" in a t-shirt and jeans.

In one ad, "Broken Promises" PC is pictured in a series of flashbacks promising over and over again for each new Microsoft OS that it's "not gonna have any of the problems my last operating system had."

But as DailyTech points out, Apple actually showed Microsoft a little love, too, by announcing that it will provide support for Windows 7 in Mac OS X Snow Leopard's Boot Camp.

Responding to a deluge of comments from Apple MacBook owners pleading for official Windows 7 Boot Camp support, Apple revealed that it will be adding support for the new OS before the end of the year.

Check out the whole series on the Apple website here.

Think about this ...

If you could only run Windows on computers manufactured and sold by Microsoft I bet it would work perfectly every time.

The amazing thing is that it works at all on any computer manufactured by every Tom, Dick, and HP around the globe.

I have been using the free copy of Windows 7 beta and it is great. Really! You will like it.
Stable as XP and pretty as Vista.

I just installed the store-bought Windows 7 today.

One problem.

iTunes 9 won't run on Windows 7 as released on October 22 even though iTunes 8 ran just fine on Windows 7 beta.

Hmmm .....

It's only funny because it's true! Microsoft has made a zillion promises and claims that didn't hold up in the slightest!

Windows 7 might be brilliant but I'd never know: Whoever believes their claims is asking to get ripped-off. Again.

Dear Mac Lovers,

Are you all insane?

Seriously, I had to get my first Mac. It cost about $500 more than a PC with the same specs (or, to put it another way, I could have gotten a GREAT PC computer for $1500 instead of an anemic Macbook).

Yes, it's "carved out of a single block of aluminum". Very pretty. So what.

But the most AGGRAVATING thing is the typical anal-retentive Apple control-freakishness of their machines (and iPOD, I'm looking at you, too).

They have so few ports that I don't even need a manual to ID them. There's ethernet....2 USB ports (just two!) and a pretty useless SD port (it SHOULD have been a third USB port at least, then you could still use it for SD if needed).

But...no HDMI, no way to connect it to the TV (but you CAN use a mini-only-Mac-compatible-device if you want to see it). And....yes, they now "have a firewire" (since the last had NONE).

But is it a 6 pin? a 4 pin? In otherwords is it something STANDARD?

No, it's a 9 pin firewire!!!! Because,, when you're only going to include ONE, be sure to include the one that NOBODY USES!!!!!

I now have had to buy ANOTHER cable (a "bilingual" one )

Now I have to see if it WORKS!!! (Oh, and if you're transfering data from an old Mac G4 for example, it doesn't. You need an adapter).

Horrible!

I've had absolutely no problem with my Mac Pro. As far as the price, it was worth it. I suggest you turn it off every once in a while. Besides, Windows blows.

May I ask what you love so much about it?

Not being rude, just curious.

I understand the Mac Mystique (so cool! That design! No viruses! (just a lot of Apple bloatware)

I've had no problems with Windows and love how easy it is to look around and tweak the system as needed. And you get so much bang for your buck with a PC than with a Mac.

Now I have one, I want to feel the love, too. So far, all I feel is frustration with the control-freakishness of the design and the choices (no HDMI or VGA...a ridiculous 9 oin firewire...)that make no sense from a consumer POV.

What is it about the workings (not looks) of Mac that people think is so worth all the extra bucks and diminished user control?

"The new iMac The ultimate all-in-one. Now with the ultimate display."

Cool!! I bet my BlyRay discs will look great on that!

Oh wait ...

Apples don't have BluRay drives available ....

I think the commercials are hilarious. I have an iMac and a Toshiba laptop that runs Vista and love them both, except for one thing on the Toshiba: the trackpad. PCs have never gotten that right and it forces me to use a mouse. Other than that, I have had no problems with Vista. I guess I'm just lucky.

I think the pontifications on both sides are pretty silly. If you're happy with what you have, who cares about anything else? Get a life.

"I think the commercials are hilarious. I have an iMac"

This kind of goes back to what I've been saying though. The only people who really find these ads entertaining are people who own Macs, and it's not even all of them. Having owned Macs myself up until about 6 years ago, I find these ads really smug and arrogant, in addition to misleading.

Eris23:
"Frankly, I think they just applied the right gimmick that was a natural consequence of the silly ads that Apple was running. Note that, if you look at the actual research, most people who don't own Apples have found the "I'm a Mac. I'm a PC" ads to be pretty arrogant and off putting."

Sorry, but I haven't seen the research you are referring to, so until i do I'll consider your comment FUD.

---------------------------------------------

Eris23's response:
"You wouldn't admit it if you had. The fact is, given it hasn't exactly been a secret how expensive Macs are, particularly in the early days of the "I'm a Mac" ads, the viewers were actually finding the "PC" character more likable."

Then Eris23 disappeared and never returned.

---------------------------------------------

""You wouldn't admit it if you had." That's all you got?

Beware folks. This is just an example.
Eris23 talks a lot but he just boils down to another mac hater running around spreading his hate, like a cultist. Put an end to this and back up your talk or take your wuppin like a man. LOL

Yeah... Windows is so horrible, that Apple is very literally forced to provide both boot-time and emulated support for it.

If they think Windows is so bad, why don't they stop supporting it? Starve the beast, guys. So everyone they don't need that mean ol' Windows, and that your catalogue of at least a hundred different Apple programs is more than anyone could possibly need.

And we all know OSX has never, ever, ever had any problems...

What Microsoft should have come out with is Windows XP. Yes. The same XP that worked so well for so long.

Maybe with some enhancements but with the same feel.

You see, what we really hate the most is when they change the "feel".

That's what Themes are there for. Run the "Classic" theme, it feels like XP. Vista did the same thing, too.

Total morons. Read the following and "live the life you love" by computing without looking at dirty windows:
http://web.me.com/captcct/Site/Tech_Review.html
And while you are at it spend a few bucks on something worthwhile... please also see:
http://web.me.com/captcct/Navigating_The_World/Welcome.html Per other posts posted!

That is if the moderator at The Times allows this. The NYT, WSJ and Huffington Post agreeably allow me to post links to the aforementioned websites that actually do inform and help others in their conclusions about reality. With nicety. Get an Apple Mac. It's ripe and does not byte. As mentioned elsewhere on other posts (per mentioned) Steve Jobs is not paying me for this comment. He should... but that's my opinion. We are all after all entitled to 'one's opinion.' Are we not? Shouldn't we get rewarded for it?

If people really wanted Macs, they would have already purchased them.

Now that Apple has consumed most of the Linux market, there's nobody left to "switch". Yeah, they'll get enough new users to maintain their 4% market share, but that's about it.

Most people have more things going on in their lives that they aren't going to feel passionately about an Operating System. In the grand scheme of things, it's just not that important. It's an OS, not a lifestyle.

No matter what some of the posters say, regardless of the flight back to 1984 (and the cool commercial), there is no denying that Steve Jobs vision came to fruition with Apple. Today Apple is the fastest growing computer company (and healthiest in $ terms) which pleases anyone lucky enough to have bought shares in it. I started using Mac in 1984. I created the world's first magazine all about helicopters (remote control and full-size) with Pagemaker in 1984 after doing it all by hand paste up on my dining room table. If it wasn't for Mac I would never have been able to do it thereafter for the next nine years. Today, Apple rules. Mac rules which is why byting into an Apple keeps the doctor at bay (pun intended - see why Mac has the best laptop in the world today: http://web.me.com/captcct/Site/Tech_Review.html For all the daft PC users and slaves to the Gates empire... I suggest you migrate and take a byte (boat) into a Mac and go to computer heaven. When you do, you will actually see the difference and believe why it is so rosy. No! I was not paid to say this by Mr. Jobs but he could consider it. (Nice smile).

Welcome to the 90s, where there were GUI related desktop publishing apps that did exactly what you needed for multiple platforms by multiple companies. There's probably a good reason why Apple isn' paying you and is just happy to take your money instead. :)
03:46 PM on 10/23/2009
I first saw the Ad last night and thought "Holy krap they really are scared of the switchers and upgraders not coming to Apple or sticking with them" As a Mac owner I'm tired of the same old slanted bashing krap being trotted out all the time. some of the ads were really funny but the comments just as easily applied to Mac as they do Windows.
This latest ad smacks of rampant desperation ... and fear. Fear that Snow leopard didn't take off like Apple thought it would and Windows 7 will! Fear that lots of early adopters on the Intel Mac Platform now have a solid reason to switch back to Windows and a means to do so, and fear that a lot of the reasons that caused users to switch applied to Windows Vista, don't apply to windows 7 but more importantly, just as equally apply to Macs now. As has been said in earlier posts Apple would do well to prove to me how and why OSX is so much better than Windows 7 and spend less time bashing what they perceive as their opposition.

Finally in the interests of full disclosure... I run a Mac Book Pro 17" (an excellent laptop) with Snow leopard and Windows 7. I spend 99% of my time in windows these days, because IMO it is that much better and easier than OSX. YMMV more power to you if it does.

This is pretty ridiculous. These are light hearted ads ribbing windows 7. There's is nothing fearful or desperate about them. Apple is the most successful computer company in the industry. They could buy Dell and pay cash and still have billions left over. And Snow Leopard was never meant to "take off", it's mainly an update to Leopard. Mac sales are growing quarter after quarter, while the rest of the PC industry flounders.
03:32 PM on 10/23/2009
The Mac ads are insulting. I didn't realize Jobs was a Republican.
12:10 PM on 10/23/2009
So Apple, how easy is it for PowerPC Mac owners to upgrade to Snow Leopard?... oh wait.

Seems kind of desperate that the only Mac commercials for the past 5 years have been Windows attack ads.
02:04 PM on 10/23/2009
Is that really the best you can do? Hint: Snow Leopard offers no advantages to users of PPC processors. It's designed to take advantage of the capabilities of current hardware and offers few GUI features not found in Leopard.

His point just goes to show how silly the Mac Cultists' talking point about Microsoft "forcing people to upgrade" is. It's been part of the equation for Apple since Panther. But, you knew that, right? :)
11:15 AM on 10/23/2009
I very much dislike this new attack ad. At this point Apple is more or less saying you are stupid to have a Windows based computer which is insulting. Sure I have had my issues over the years with Windows but the fun of putting together your own machine and tweaking it for beasty gaming performance is something that Apple user's will never know. The fact is Apple has been the solution for people who are not as tech savvy and can live with less performance for more money.

It's why Apple has largely been no threat to Microsoft. Their ads are meant to woo over Microsoft users and yet, in the end, they just don't really do that. Apple's strength/bread and butter as a company has come down to iPods and iPhones. If they truly want to woo over common Microsoft users, many of who simply aren't disgruntled, Apple really needs to demonstrate what it is that makes their machine so great for common users and why it's worth the higher price. The "I'm a Mac" ads simply don't do that. It comes off as nothing more than mockery of a brand, which most people won't be swayed by or care about, especially when the brand being pitched costs so much more.

I just pirated Windows 7 and VMWare Fusion and it's much better than all the old Windows versions, but still just alright. I haven't found anything to do with it yet. Maybe play SWTOR when it comes out.

It's just an OS. Everyone talks about operating systems like they are going to change your life or something... but deep down, they are both pretty boring, and pretty much the same.
