What's Your Reaction?
Quigley

Seniority, party loyalty and congressional etiquette don't seem to get in the way of Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.).

The freshman lawmaker is ready to break with his fellow Democrats by supporting a proposal to subpoena documents that may reveal unpleasant details about two prominent Democratic senators and their involvement in a discredited Countrywide lending program.

The first-term congressman, who won Rahm Emanuel's seat in April, backs a full-scale investigation into Countrywide, the disgraced subprime lender, that would include a Republican proposal before the House oversight committee to subpoena potentially damaging records related to preferential loans Democratic Sens. Chris Dodd (Conn.) and Kent Conrad (N.D.) received through the lender's "Friends of Angelo" program (which refers to indicted Countrywide chairman Angelo Mozilo).

"At this point in my state's history and my country's history, we've got to go out of our way to be transparent," Quigley told the Huffington Post. "Much of what took place with predatory lending is responsible for the financial crisis."

Quigley is ready to cross the aisle at a time when the issue has so deeply divided the two parties that the Democrats punished House oversight Republicans for shooting "campaign style videos" from inside the chamber by changing the lock on a door leading into the hearing room from the GOP suite of offices.

Quigley relied heavily on his reputation as a reformer to win the special election to the Fifth District seat Emanuel vacated to become President Obama's chief of staff, and vowed to take his reformist ways to Washington, D.C.

His willingness to support an investigation into the two Democratic senators could be seen as an indication of his determination to stay true to that promise and a sign of how sensitive Democrats are to charges of hypocrisy when they purport to be helping everyday people and yet are getting special treatment from banks.

"Republicans punted away control of Congress because of ethics violations," Quigley said. "I'm just here to make sure the same thing doesn't happen to my party."

Republican Rep. Darrell Issa (Calif.), who is proposing the subpoenas, offered as a concession to the Democratic-led committee to allow names to be redacted, but Quigley wants the names kept in.

"If in the course of an investigation, subpoenas are issued and members' names are included, fine. We'll send the names to the ethics committee," Quigley said. "But that shouldn't halt a broader investigation."

Committee chairman Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) has resisted calling a vote on the proposal. Towns also received mortgages from Countrywide but denies any wrongdoing.

An oversight committee hearing scheduled for Thursday was abruptly postponed on Wednesday afternoon, after Democrats said they needed more time to sift through a stack of documents from Bank of America that arrived recently.

Though Quigley said he thinks Democrats will come around to supporting an investigation, he acknowledged that the response from his side of the aisle has been uneasy. Arguing against his own party is nothing new for the former Cook County commissioner, who regularly found himself a lone opposing vote against the Democratic-controlled Board.

"This reminds me of my first three years on the county board," Quigley said, referring to his opposition to a Democratic proposal in 2000 to increase the county parking tax. "It has the same tenor, same tone, same mood. It's like deja vu."

A committee source said the hearing that was postponed could be rescheduled for early next week.

A spokeswoman for committee chairman Towns declined to say whether he would call Issa's subpoena proposal for a vote or whether he would support it.

If the Democratic Party were pure and only interested in the well-being of the American people, I doubt that the nation would be in such sad shape, or that the Republicans would have as much power as they do even now.

While I would have preferred to break the power of the Republicans - since they rather openly represent only the few and their corporations - first, the fact is we're not going to get any change that anybody can believe in until we get rid of those corrupt enough to assist the few and their corporations in their effort to overthrow our government.

Whatever Party they're in.

I can live with this. Yes, Bush and Cheney are alleged to have committed much more serious crimes, but they're also out of power. Dodd and Conrad, if they're guilty, have greater capacity to go on abusing their power than someone who no longer has any. Getting them stopped, if neccessary, makes sense as a higher priority.

Please let's first investigate Bush, Cheney et al and then let's move to the small stuff.

"Small stuff" may be defined differently, depending upon where you live.

Getting a preferential rate on a home loan is small stuff compared to tanking the economy, invading a country on false pretenses, causing the unnecessary deaths of nearly 5000 service men and women, the unnecessary maiming of thousands more, the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians, torture, the dismissal of the 4th Amendment, no bid contracts, murderous mercenaries, signing statements etc..........

Where I live graft is a petty crime compared to larceny, murder and torture......

Investigating the conservative's subprime fiasco is hardly small stuff.

I agree: Do it. Investigate.

Frankly, I think Dodd will likely be shown to have benefitted only very modestly and most likely was unaware of the benefit being a special perk. We already know how much he got off - I've forgotten - but it was only a couple of points and some waved fees. It's nothing like the half million Stevens got when they remodeled his house for free. And, it is true that sometimes lenders do things like this for non senatorial clients.

So, I think that Dodd is most likely at low risk and therefore I think we should continue forward - it won't be nearly as bad as the Rs would have us believe. So, let the disinfectant of sunshine do its thing - the full light of day is awaiting the debacle that is Countrywide.

Investigate away, If Dodd and Conrad are guilty of actual crimes, lower the boom on them! If they are merely guilty of using their status for preferred treatment, well almost everyone of privilege and rank are guilty of it.

I hope they don't find any wrongdoing - but I am SO happy to see someone in Congress that is putting the people above politics!

Does this really mean that any person who got a loan from Countrywide is guilty of its wrongdoing?? This guilt by association is really nuts!

Dodd was outed on this up front when the story broke...10 months ago??? Quigley, Quigley, Quigley, NOT now, not to a Democrat - when YOU are a democrat, NOT now...you will be given far more serious crimes in the Senate and House that have backbone and NEED to be cleaned up yesterday...so much more to choose from..I hope you are big enough to handle the REALLY big stuff.

He will have to be seen as non-partisan to get anything done. People will have to start lining up for justice or be seen as having something to hide. This is one of the first truly bi-partisan agendas that I could get behind.

Don't pin any medals on Quigley just yet. I doubt there's a representative or senator who hasn't received preferential treatment from one lender or another. This may all be just a tempest in a teapot that the GOP is trying to use for distraction purposes.

No medals, I just appreciate his ruckus raising. imho, it's never a bad time to shine the spotlight on yourselves. There may be big, important things going on, but if the people in charge aren't playing fair, how can we expect them to do anything correctly? Too many pols playing fast and loose with rules and laws for their own personal gain. It's never a bad time to get a little soap on that dirty laundry. Goes for both major parties.

I like Mike!

I knew he was going to start raising a ruckus soon after he got to DC. If things remind him of Cook County Board Politics, the situation in DC is wayyy worse than people think.

He's got my vote next year.

What happened to the torture investigation? What happened to the billions that were lost in Iraq? If we get these investigations going, then we ought to do them in order!

Can we say one term.

I think it's a good idea to clean out all the garbage in Congress Dem or Repub....but

Before you get all gung-ho about siding with the GOP, you need to look at what's in their closets and back yards because the grass ain't always greener on the other side.

They will not side with the Dems to investigate anyone in their party but will most likely continue to employ stall tactics as they've done in the past.

Where is Quigleyon on investigating important matters.

For instance - 911

According to a 2007 New York Times/CBS News poll, only 16% of Americans think the government is telling the truth about 9/11 and the intelligence prior to the attacks:

"Do you think members of the Bush Administration are telling the truth, are mostly telling the truth but hiding something, or are they mostly lying?

Telling the truth 16%

Hiding something 53%

Mostly lying 28%

Not sure 3%"

If we are going to investigate real crimes how about we start with the biggest crime in US history?

After all it appears nobody buys into the 19 cavedwellers with box-cutters learning how to fly airliners into buildings in the most heavily defended airspace in the world story.

Too many coincidences, too many holes in the time line, far too many unanswered questions and way to many safety measures the 9/11 Commission proposed have not been implemented yet.

But try to take a standard sized bottle of shampoo onto an airplane........

I support Quigley.

Seeing the FOA portion of "Capitalism: A Love Story" made me rage. I don't care what party people are in. This kind of backscratching needs to see the light of day.

It's only been about a year since the bailouts. Let's wait another year so Wall Street can use our money to finish buying up the remaining congresscritters they don't already own.
