Stevens

True/Slant:

For those following the debacle of former Senator Ted Stevens' prosecution, the big news today was that the head of the unit at the Justice Department who handled the case, stepped down, moving back to Massachusetts for "family reasons."

For those that diligently followed the Stevens' investigation this is something of a catharsis. There were a lot of things that went wrong with the government's case against Stevens. To refresh: there was a huge typo in the indictment; the Justice Department withholding of evidence in discovery (which led to it being excluded) and the affair the Justice staffer supposedly had with the government's key witness. And that's not even counting the other distractions in the trial, like the juror who skipped deliberations to head to a horse race in California.

Is there no way to retry him?

And, why did it seem that all those Senators were giving him a standing ovation when he left?

He was a mean man who blocked important investigations into crimes.

Can we give Stevens a consolation prize? Like a quail hunting trip with Cheney?

The photo of Ted Stevens makes it appear that he was in dire need of a cathartic. Time wounds all heels. Newsweek & the Economist gives Republican politicians GERD.

Did Stevens have a QUARTER MILLION in work done on his home or NOT?

All evidence is he did and he returned favors!

Why should Stevens run free without Prosecution because of some Justice Mistakes - Big and Small!

Start NEW TR1AL with the facts and lets get to the bottom of this without all the DISTRACTIONS!

Stevens was in the Senate for a long time. I bet he has plenty of dirt to throw around on both sides of the aisle. He is not going to jail.

I am an Alaska resident who voted for ted stevens in the past, and who followed the trial. Ted Stevens did things that were not ethical and most likely illegal. He and many others think he is above the law for bringing so much money to Alaska. The prosecution goofed, so another Alaska lawbreaker skates. What does that teach our youth?

Hey, when you put a fox in charge of guarding the hen house this is what you get. A perfect metaphor for the Bush years.

Is there anyone who doesn't think that the Bushie "prosecutors" didn't purposely thank the Stevens case?

In my experience, federal prosecutors don't make these types of mistakes.

As with most GOP politicians convicted of wrong doing, and given jail time, I doubt very much that ANYONE will see jail time in the Ted Stevens business.

The ones who should will never see the inside of a jail cell, in effect, thumbing their noses at the judicial and at us honest people who still live by th law!!!

You must have missed it...

The case was thrown out due to prosecutorial misconduct

You must have missed it..... It was the Bush Attorney General's office that prosecuted him. Do you really think they really wanted to convict him? I think not.
