WSJ:

Capping a tumultuous year for business magazines, Fortune is planning to publish about one-quarter fewer issues annually and make other changes, joining the ranks of publications scrambling to reinvent themselves in the advertising downturn.

Fortune's new publishing schedule is part of a remodeling at the magazine that is expected to result in staff cuts and a sharper focus on the long stories that have been its trademark.

You would think a magazine named fortune wouldn't need to cut staff. They must not be living up to their title. Wouldn't MisFortune be a better name for this rag?

"staff cuts and a sharper focus", translation, we are going to lay off enough staff to balance the books, and if that fails, we will starting cutting the number of pages in the mag until we can balance the books...
bottom line, death spiral time....

WSJ went from 5 to 6 days per week long ago. Murdoch is turning WSJ into a general interest sheet. Time Warner is cutting the # of issues for Fortune. Will the Time-Life people combine Fortune with Life in yet another attempt to re-launch the much folded Life, maybe include Time & People to create a synergy? Time-Life will have to fold Fortune soon regardless of cutting Fortune's frequency & possibly combining Fortune with other Time-Life magazine titles. Adding Life to Fortune will kill Fortune & all other T-L titels T-L combines with Fortune in 2 months. T-W can cut the price of T-L or fold all of T-L's titles when T-W spins off T-L.. T-W will save a lot of scarce money by spinning off T-L. T-W will save an immense amount of money if it folds itself out of existance too. US isn't likely to even talk of absorbing People. The same thing goes for T-W's T-L periodical print media; nobody will want any part of it. What's with T-W cable? How about T-W's recording & T-L books operations? T-W could disappear well before 2012. 9/15/08 is still, brutally, changing American business & it wil be much worse.

Mark Zuckerberg on the cover of (the FORTUNE) that he stole, I wonder how he can sleep at night, knowing he isn't the genius that others make him out to be.

His parents must be so proud.
