Matt Taibbi

True/Slant:

We're coming up on the one- year anniversary of Barack Obama's election. I think it's maybe time that we asked ourselves how he's doing.

He didn't close Guantanamo Bay, and not only didn't reject the idea of pre-emptive detention but added spice to his own new version of pre-crime prosecution, "prolonged detention." He promised health care reform and campaigned on a public option, and we all know how that is going to turn out

I'm probably going to vote third party in 2012. I hope Kucinich moves to be an Independent.

I would love to see Kucinich/Kaptur or a ticket with Grayson.

Forget the broken promises. Campaign promises are always broken.

How about those promises he is keeping.
Obama showed his true colors the minute he did the 180 on FISA and retroactive telecom immunity and then told his liberal base he didn't care if it was a deal breaker for them. In effect, that meant he embraced and expanded Bush's illegal data mining on American citizens without cause.

He supported expanding NAFTA into South America in spite of its massive failures for working people.
He said he embraced all of the free/fair trade agreements that have adversely affected the job market in the US.
He said he was going to grow the war in Afghanistan.
He told Wall Street he was their friend and he said it in public and on the record. He voted to support the bailout and helped push it through, no questions asked.
He said he embraced and would expand Bush's faith based initiative.

Nope I won't help him or another Democrat.

matt is a failed journalist (do a little research on his time in russia) and now he wants to hand the republicans the white house in 2012

he is definitely part of the problem (a lack of understanding of what is going on, an excess level of hysteria and populism and a steady stream of misinformation) than part of the cure

That Obama has betrayed his base is a given:rendition, military tribunals, intercepts, predator drune attacks, release of interrogation photos, wiretaps and of course prolonged detention! Everywhere else pathetic compromise:gay rights, healthcare, the environment,Wall Street, ect. Hope is not a policy and is increasingly becoming a national joke.

If Elizabeth Warren should be president, Matt should be head of the SEC. After reading his latest article in Rolling Stone, I'm convinced he's the only person who actually understands what has gone on and continues to evolve.

But what happens when he is approached with "whatever his heart desires"? Is he a mere mortal, or will he stick to his obligations? He is, after all, "only a writer". No matter how dedicated someone is, it is the very rare exception that does not cave to self-serving greed and rationalization.

Reading these comments and also in other blogs, I wonder what you _detractors of our President were expecting? That he'd ride into Washington DC, wave a magic wand, and immediately undo decades of trickle down economics in 6 months? Do you know how many _enemies he has?

Do any of you really know how things work inside the Beltway? Carter tried to go out of his way not to work with the power brokers and look what happened to him, when he had a Democratic majority in both Houses of Congress. The President cannot use Executive powers of decree to undo laws, why that would be _dictatorship, and I don't think you want that, do you?

What's the matter with you? Get off your _fat _asses and DO something instead of _whining. Besides, you have three choices: 1. sit out the next election; 2. vote Republican.Libertarian (they're both the same-Ron Paul and Bob Barr are or were Republican); or 3. vote Independent.

And if you choose to do #2 or #3, WHO, praytell, is there to vote for?

We have really become a _pathetic society of immediate gratification without working for anything anymore.

Listen carefully to the lyrics of this song, it applies to all you _whiners, especially YOU, Taibbi.

Seeing that three of his "enemies" to undoing three decades of trickle down economics are Geithner, Summers, and Rubin, and the fact that they just happen to be his hand picked economic advisers, really doesn't speak all that well to your apparent point that the president is fighting a unwinnable battle. And then to add a fourth enemy to trickle down economics, Bernanke, a person that he has endorsed for another term as Fed Chairman, really doesn't bode all that well to your point, either. Those were the president's choices, and he blew it.

We all voted for change. And it really doesn't look like we got it. I voted for Main Street over Wall Street, and that hasn't happened - at least not yet. I didn't vote for "Oh, there's a Democrat in charge now, cool". That doesn't make me a detractor, or a whiner. It makes me someone who will look else where in 2012, though, should this nonsense continue out of that administration.

My point is, this is a winnable battle, and it has to be won. Thank goodness for this country that presidents such as FDR, TR, and others, didn't have the attitude of "It's too hard to do", when it came to dealing with Wall Street. It's about whose in charge.

Enjoy your day...

How about Elizabeth Warren For President in 2012 bumper stickers and yard signs just for the fun of it.

I bet very few Americans know who she is or what she is saying. A little name recognition couldn't hurt.

I'll vote for her.

Obama has proven, so far, to be extremely corporatist.

I'd rather have a President that is a representative of the average Taxpayer / Citizen instead of a POTUS that works so hard for executives of the biggest corporations.

Taibbi is a phony spoiled poster child for nepotism. His rants are very similar to those tactics used during the sixties and seventies. They throw in a mouthpiece and have him sow rifts. Unfortunately people still fall for the same tactics. The truth is he a product of a system that has now become as entrenched and corrupt as the one he claims to be against. The media is controlled by corporations and the staff is loaded with people married to or related in some way to many of the very rich. Taibbi is a descendant of the country club journalism class that has for decades helped dumb down the news media. He is just carrying on the family tradition.

Rolling Stone magazine is still one of the few remaining magazines that is independently owned. Taibbi does his research and has a style that appeals to a lot of rational people that are fed up with the gridlock in Washington that is beholden to lobbyists.

I like Taibbi's articles, your ad hominem attacks not withstanding. Having said that, I think he expects too much from Obama. Obama is the President of the US, he's not Elizabeth Mongtomery.

Thanks for all the links, reporting and facts. Maybe, if you'd drop the petty resentment and produce a story with evidence that can be verified you could have some cheese with your whine.

She is very good at what she does. and very knowledgable. Was she critisizing as much when she was working with Bush.

The problem with some of you guys. your decision making is for the moment. you don't understand patience and long term thinking. for the moment only works for the moment.

she is good at what she does. but presidential - not so much. its not a 1 ring circus (as in just the economy) but i would love for her to take over treasury and send timmy and his posse running for their mamas.
