What's Your Reaction?
Jeff Dunham Show

Videogum:

Before I talk about last night's premiere of The Jeff Dunham Show on Comedy Central, I would first like to issue a couple of apologies. I'm sorry, Jay Leno, I was wrong. Your comedy is hackneyed, aggressively middlebrow, toothless, and focuses way too much on your expensive car collection, and your exit from the Tonight Show only to reclaim the 10PM slot was obnoxious. But you are the Louis C.K. of late night with the manners of Princess Grace compared to Jeff Dunham. And I'm sorry, Seth MacFarlane, I was wrong. Your TV shows are stupid, repetitive, poorly written, and insufferably scatalogical, and you yourself seem to be excessively arrogant and self-congratulatory, with terrible taste in leather jackets and hand tanning. But you are the thinking man's (pre-Soon-Yi) Woody Allen, blazing Mark Twainian paths of comedic invention compared to Jeff Dunham and his horror show of backwoods racist, homophobic, misogynistic, anti-semitic, shithead puppets.

I somehow feel vindicated in not finding his 'Achmed the Dead Terrorist' funny.

Unfortunately my kids still do.

The show is remarkably lame. I'm guessing it's a way to cash in on an audience's guilty indulgence in laughing at stuff that is genuinely bigoted, stereotyped "comedy". I think the reason we don't see more critical rants like this topic is that, unlike some other racist, prejudiced popular figures, this guy is truly weak and tacky. Why he's gotten farther than opening for someone in a seedy nightclub, is a mystery.....I mean, I see stuff regularly on low-budget non-english speaking channels with better puppets and more intelligently crafted performances. I agree having his own show lifts him to an undeserved level of visibility, but I'd be surprised if it's a hit. Sadly surprised.

Maybe not the worst thing in the world - but awful close to it. It could still be made worse, with the addition of a mime ( shudder)

I've seen Dunham a couple times and thought he was good.

I didn't think the show was THAT bad, but I don't see it going very far.

Besides, everybody knows that the official worst thing in the entire world was the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special.

Please tell me it wasn't like the 'Brady Bunch Special'.

Hmmm...either none of the commenters have ever seen Jeff's stand up (and how could you miss it because they run so regularly) or this country really is being overtaken by more-offended-than-thou PC police.

Frankly, I love the show and I know when something is satire. He is pointing out the idiocy of racial and socioeconomic stereotyping. The man insults himself (and his dogs) on a regular basis.

Why on earth would anyone be offended by this? I've always felt that if someone is offended by something, as all of you seem to be by Jeff Dunham, then you need to examine why you give him the power to offend you in the first place, because being offended by something someone else says only shows a weakness in yourself

I'm not saying The Jeff Dunham show was particularly good. It was stale and boring and little more than an expansion of his stand up routine. But at least I *get at* what he's trying to do and say

The answer to this article's headline is a resounding Yes. I watched it -- for about 15 minutes -- because my buddy thinks Dunham is funny. After a vote of 2-3, the channel was democratically changed.

Jeff Dunham should be beaten with those puppets -- he is a hack and not the least bit funny. If a Jeff Dunham Movie comes out, I will be moving overseas.

Nice post, Gabe ... or should I say, Walter. Guess you really have some issues with Jeff. I', too, would be driven to a hate-filled, obscenity-laden rant against a guy who constantly put his hand up my backside.

good article, my favorite side branch of comedy is when comedians make fun of other comedians – in part because they are taking comedy seriously. This article touches on some of this that, yes.. the show looks and is very dumb I am sure...

I don't have cable, live in Australia and they had the terrorist skeliton puppet all over TV selling its catch phrase as a dial in and down load ring tone (about a year ago).. I know this guy isn't known here (they don’t play anything he does) so Australians just liked the ring tone because it was veiled racism....

I agree with everybody here. But let's not get too upset with Comedy Central. Some of their stuff is good, especially Daily Show/Colbert. But there can never be a whole lot of good stuff to go around; I've resigned myself to the inevitable ubiquity of swill ( it must have something to do with the laws of thermodynamics, esp.. the one dealing with entropy's relentless destruction of the universe). How do you know if something is swill or the "good stuff" ? Besides actually watching it ( not recommended }, you can see how often the prospective swill is played. The more it's played and replayed, the more likely it's swill. Example : Blue collar comedy. I think this one was once called "red neck" comedy and appeared originally on CMT network. Whether I was correct or not, this is clearly rewarmed "He Haw". The same thing naturally applies for Larry the cable guy. If you were a "He Haw" devotee, then I apologize to you, I'm wrong!
