Both my parents worked until they died, in their 80s. Dad finished up a project an hour earlier. Mom worked a short shift on something she loved, stopped by the hair dresser, then had a glass of wine on the patio. Staying active kept them healthy and mentally alert until the end.

For myself, in my 60s, I can not see a time in my life when I won't work. Sitting around a house trying to fill the time seems very boring.

If one works after retiring, then they are not retired.

After working 50 yrs, I enjoy not working, although I could use a PT job to bring in more income. I don't miss the aches and pains acquired while working up until I decided to stop entirely, and which left me drained at the end of the work day. There are many occupations that don't accommodate aging and actually exacerbate the process. For someone with deteriorating faculties, those occupations can be dangerous.

I think what many of the elderly term their love of work is actually their love of remaining a social animal. The fear of isolation is a real one as you age, but in many cases, we bring it upon ourselves when we remain locked into what we have been doing all our lives and fear change.

I couldn't imagine not working after retirement. I wish I could find something more lucrative, but I am happy with my retirement job because it gives me a pressure-less work environment and is flexible enough to permit me time for my recovery activities....Oh yeah, and I get in lots of motorcycling and bicycling...

There are plenty of older employees that would love to continue working but really do not want to work the 12 hour days that younger workers are sometimes required to put in. A smart business would find a way to incorporate all ages of workers. There are many things that younger workers can learn from older workers and older workers can benefit from the enthusiasm that younger workers bring to the job. As a worker in my early 50's, I can see that my years of experience make me smarter about many things, but also sometimes prevent me from looking at issues with a fresh perspective. We need both kinds of thinking to stay ahead in our businesses.

Also, it seems to me if we had universal health care then hiring older workers would not be a health care burden on a business.

We need to broaden our ideas of how to run businesses so that we can stay competitive in the world.
