The Obamas were vigilant about date night before they moved to Washington, and thankfully they haven't let the tradition slip since moving to Washington. Whether they're flying to New York to take in a Broadway show or stepping out in D.C. to toast 17 years of marriage, this first couple clearly knows how to keep the fire alive. See the photos below and scroll down to see Michelle speak about date nights.

August, 2008

The couple stepped out for a dinner date in Honolulu in August, 2008.

Read the Obama PDA Big News Page.

In January Michelle spoke with CNN's Roland Martin about date night as "part of the reminder that this family is not just two folks raising kids, but it's two people building a life together." She then put a message out to "All the parents out there, have your date nights. It's important for kids to know that their parents are connecting."

Great to see they are still intact after all the crap that is thrown at President Obama.
I'm dissappointed in his political decisons, not all, but a few key ones. THey still set a great example to the country, it can't be easy being Michelle Obama in spite of all they have going for them.

maybe the president should date a couple of the senators to try and get this public option done. it can be obama's legacy and change the face of america

No wonder he has no time to meet with General McChrystal.

Yeah, they both turned out just to want to be famous--don't care for politics, or public works, or governing--just fame, please, and lots of admirers! They're going to photo-op and sound byte and overexpose themselves into history as the biggest con job in the history of the presidency.

really, this was not true of the Bushes. Some people are stuck in the last 8 years and have not been paying attention to what the Obamas have done or, simply, are happier is Fox land.

LOL! What's the matter, doesn't Mr Fonebone take you out anymore?

This is called FAMILY VALUES.

The best way to "PROTECT MARRIAGE" is to make time for your spouse.

Obama is taking care of business - for the most part. The parts he is avoiding are mainly because he has too much on his plate (thank you Bush) and a lot of opposition.

He is entitled to his private time with his wife and family. Not his problem that the media hounds him and makes a cover story out of every dress his wife wears or every time he walks out of the White House. They can get the pictures of him taking Michelle to dinner or walking the dog. They don't get the pictures of him in meetings and at his desk working from early morning to late at night.

Were I a betting man I'd wager Obama puts in more hours of real work each day than Bush did in a week.

Clearly, some people spend too much time in the style section and need to check out the politics and home page. Of course, they may be too busy listening to the naysayers and, out right, l i a r s about what Obama has and is doing.

Like you can get a General to come out on a Saturday night. Yeesh. Besides, three's a crowd. Do your head and body reside in the same area code?

After you posted that comment, I am sure you looked at it and thought how cr-aaa-zy it sounded and looked. If the few date nights that the Obamas have had have interferred with communications with Gen McCrystal, then theres something terribly wrong with the military and our nation. This complaint is not logical.

He wants the outcome to reflect some sort of moderation, and therefore allow for an easier road with upcoming ground breaking legislation.

If Laura and George Bush did this date night thing, you people would be going out of your minds. As it stands now, this gushing over the president's social life is over the top. Not to mention a total bore and waste of time.

then why are you here? If George and Laura had gone out on "dates," we would have enjoyed that as well but some people are in Fox land where they believe that all liberals are evil.

Oh stop your whining, and come up with something of substance to complain about !

Better yet...save your BS for your own party.

You should be more concerned with the GOP's inability to be relevant these days. The only thing preventing Dems from totally rolling you guys over are the Blue Dogs....and THE PRESIDENT ! He has insisted on NOT pushing personally for a public option (even though the votes are available in both chambers) , purely because he wants the outcome to reflect some sort of moderation, and therefore allow for an easier road with upcoming ground breaking legislation.

Imagine that - moderation without the input of redumbicans.

GOP - IRRELEVANT !!

***He has insisted on NOT pushing personally for a public option (even though the votes are available in both chambers*** Of course not, his political career will be toast!!!! That's why I marched on 9/12 in DC....what a great event. Oh, and the responses I got to this thread were totally predictable....give your collective liberal self a big hand for marching lockstep to the messiah!!

Laura and George don't have a passionate relationship (yuk). They're cold and stiff and I wouldn't be interested in their date night. You obviously are interested in the Obama's date nights or you wouldn't be here leaving comments. Jealousy and Envy if you ask me.

Well, based on this post it is at least clear why you are desperately searching for SOME relationship to be interested in. You can have one of your own, you know.

It's okay by me if all y'all who are writing in to express negative opinions about the first couple's date night tradition (!) emerge briefly from the mythical world of Rush-Fox in order to participate in this discussion because those of us who identify as progressives, and who are more than a little bit disappointed in the president's performance so far, are able to bond with each other in our contempt for y'all.

IT IS A TRULY BEAUTIFUL THING TO SEE...

A young Black couple, who clearly love one another, and share and support each other as the Obamas obviously do. Watching the First family really makes me proud, and they should be an example to all couples; (whatever race or color), to know that when you've been blessed to find someone as they apparently have to share life with, you must do all that you can to stand ready and willing to support one another, and always keep your love alive !

THEY ARE FOR REAL,............. NO PRETENCE ABOUT THEM !...... GOD BLESS THEM BOTH, BECAUSE THEY ARE WHAT OUR YOUNG PEOPLE NEED TO SEE, UNDERSTAND THE STRENGTH OF LOVE AND MARRIAGE, AND TAKE THEIR LEAD FROM !

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:55 AM on 10/25/2009

I agree with this "beautiful thing," but the right continues to use this against the President as a negative. While the left was too stupid, or wussy to not call out George Bush for taking nearly a third of his presidency "on vacation," the right considers Obama's date nights as evidence he is not serious in his presidency. Date nights are fine, but really, shouldn't this have stopped being news after the first two or three date nights? Are you going to jump up and down about date nights in the third year of Obama's presidency? Besides giving the right another item that they can misconstrue, is it really any of our business anymore?

Obama having date nights is meaningless, and certainly does not compromise his ability to govern (his philosophy does)...the real question and, I think, the thing that drives conservatives nuts is the creepy worship this site and others have with these people. The fact that they go out on dates should not be a news story and should not arouse interest in readers like it was TMZ.

Now, if you will excuse me, I am going to take a moment to think of something to say when someone asks me what i am doing here commenting on this...

Maybe not. Looking at all the damage Bush did in a bit under 7 years, if he'd been on the job all the time it might have been worse.

No one is saying the Obamas invented date night. The point is that they're an attractive and personable couple, and many of us can relate to date night, or a lot of other things they do.

For the record, no one's claiming Michelle invented the hoolahoop, or was the first person to garden, or the president is the first man to carry his daughters. Not the point.
