7 Stories That Prove You Don't Need A Car To Get A DUI

Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 10/03/11 03:28 PM ET

People do a lot of stupid crap when drunk, and if we as a society are lucky, they get caught. Here are seven examples of folks dumb enough to get arrested for drunk driving in "vehicles" that were not cars--not even close.

Note: The two incident in the slideshow from outside the U.S. didn't result in "DUIs" but the drivers of the "vehicles" in each case were punished.

Actually, it just proves that America has become a police state where the police have too much time on their hands.

Hell, I know a guy who got three DUIs - all on the same day. Number three was committed on his lawn tractor. He was cutting the grass to mollify his very POed wife, when he suddenly got thirsty and decided to make a break for the beer store. This was in a small town and he might have got away with it, except he was too tanked to remember to raise the blade and all the way to the store he was pinging gravel off every parked car he passed.

Well, at least you are joining in on the discussions where your name is appropriate, then proving it.

I have to admit, I love the motorized stool. I once had a dream that I was riding a motorized dining room table chair down a 6 lane highway, nude. I don't know what that means, but it sure was interesting.

I agree those are some morons. But I have a beef with people losing their motor vehicle drivers license for operating something other than a motor vehicle. It makes no sense. There should be some logic involved. I frequently read about people losing their license for driving a riding mower down the street drunk, for example. If you are not illegally operating the vehicle you have the license for, they shouldn't be able to take it. Well, you don't need any sort of license for riding a mower, so you shouldn't be able to take an automobile license for this. Charge them with endandering the public, public drunkenness, or whatever. There has to be a relationship between the offense and the punishment. Otherwise it's just the courts/cops making sheet up as they go.

I completely agree. But its getting more common to react to stupidity with stupidity. A tricycle? A horse? How does a horse ram into a car? I think the author of this article probably doesn't drink, and has an axe to grind against those who do. Just reading the first sentence sums it up.
10:12 AM on 10/26/2009
Exactly. Horses don't "ram" cars. Cars impose themselves where a horse was walking because the person in the car is on a crusade against a) people riding horses b) people drinking c) people not like them.

Seriously, you do not own a horse and live in the middle of the city. You own a horse and live out in the sticks. Someone was probably angry at the person riding the horse, and of course, she got arrested after getting harassed by a cop. Being female in rural areas and having a beer amounts to being "blitzed" if a male gets angry and picks up the phone.

I went to college at UC Davis and the town of Davis has very little crime but it many many bicycles (more per capita than anywhere else in the US). This means that "Biking Under the Influence" tickets were rather common. But so as to up the ante, my friend Mathew was an avid Unicyclist and he once received a citation while he was unicycling "under the influence." I say unicycling is a sobriety test in its own right but the breathalyzer said something else.

If you are capable of riding a unicycle without falling, I'd say you are sober enough to operate one.

Getting a ticket for operating a unicycle while intoxicated demonstrates that law is often used to bludgeon those that make us jealous. I guess if I were a fat, uncoordinated cop, I'd arrest a person that was perfectly capable of drinking a beer and riding a unicycle. In that way, we encourage sitting around doing nothing, or driving around eating doughnuts.

When I lived in Florida, I heard of a person getting a DUI on rollerblades. Not for speeding around insanely, but for having the gall to have a beer with lunch at an outdoor cafe, then calmly blade away from the table.

Booze is worse than do p e. Around here you cannot pick up the daily newspaper and not see a story about some drunken fo o l who got behind the wheel of a car and drove the wrong way up some parkway or ran down a family of four that was crossing the street or something like that. A couple of weeks ago there was a story about a drunken guy whose car went airborne after hitting a berm and crashed into the 2d story of some house.

I have yet to read of a similar tragedy cause by do p e users.

Booze is so pernicious that if it just came out it would be a controlled substance in 6 months.

Years ago, a popular Canadian band, Spirit of the West, had a song called "The Crawl" about a booze cruise through Vancouver. The first verse notes that they left the cars at home and carried taxi fare.

In the last verse they realize they've drunk the taxi money and get set to walk 8 miles home.

My husband's band used to practice the song so often that our middle kid thought it was a lullaby.

I've stopped viewing this type of list. In the lottery of pageviews and clickthroughs, these are the cheesy scratchers, usually with little or no payoff.

I remember when Bar-stool racing was a craze going around the country. One of the large car publications had an article about a millionaire who had a full racing team for his leopard seat covered racing barstool. A whole 54 tractor trailer rig to haul around a couple barstools, parts, and tools.
And to my surprise, this is still a big enough sport that it has an association!
