Teen With Amnesia Found In Times Square Is Identified

Authorities have identified a teenager believed to be suffering from amnesia who was found on the streets of New York two weeks ago.

Police say a CNN viewer in Maryland identified the young woman, who mysteriously turned up in Manhattan two weeks ago, claiming to have no memory of her family, her home or even her own name.

There are rare medical conditions that just cause amnesia in young people even without another underlying health problem/ab­use/substa­nce abuse. Those people are functional and seem normal except they can't remember certain things. She could really have amnesia, just like on a soap opera.

That jumped out at me too. She doesn't know who she is but she knew enough to access her bank account. But how would she access her account if she didn't even know who she was? What am I missing?

Can't remember their own name, where they are from, how they got where they are... but they remember they have an ATM card (with her name on it!) and how to use it? Well the authorities should have been able to trace her whereabouts right from the get go. She certainly didn't travel from Washington to NYC without spending any money!

Why wouldn't she scan the card in the nearest bank lobby and ask the teller to write her address down for her? Or does she not realize she has amnesia?
I mean what does she say when someone asks her what her name is? She says "I don't know..." or "I can't remember..." wouldn't she realize that's not "right"?

Story sounds fishy to me. But I admit I'm a skeptic -- especially when things just don't add up.

Sounds like a teenage girl who likes to run away, have 'fun' for a few days, and return home to face tears of joy rather than repurcussions.

I was going to speculate about the possibility she may have been abducted, but that scenario wouldn't sound plausible in the state she was found in.

It is a well known fact that date-rape drugs are known to cause amnesia. Which was what I was wondering about maybe playing into this being she's 18 and female. But then there is the bank activity.

Course, what you state about this happening before could point to a mental problem. Bipolar disorder is known to cause amnesia. Also, I believe anxiety/panic attacks can induce episodes of amnesia as well.

Either way, just glad this young woman was found and in safe hands in the end, rather than being another tragic story of a young woman gone missing and a body found later.

The mere word "amnesia" makes this whole story suspect. I thought amnesia only occurred on soap operas. Nonetheless, I hope it's a good thing for this lady to be reunited with her family.

Amnesia is very real. Brain damage can cause it and so can seizures.

One of my brothers gets it. It's really really nice of the police department to help this girl. When my brother wanders off from the assisted living center (over and over and over again!) he's usually gone for 6 months, despite being reported as a missing person, having medical ID bracelets, and my parents tracking him with credit card transactions.

I'm a doc-though not a shrink. I don't know of anyone who has had amnesia without significant (nad read that word) trauma. It falls in the Oprah world of multiple personalit­ies,repres­sed memories and Dr Phil. Thankfully,I didn't read more than a quarter of the story.
