Dean Cage

CNN:

For Jewel Mitchell, it was the worst Christmas of her life, the pain so raw she secluded herself in her bedroom to shield her two young daughters.

It was 1996, and the man she was supposed to marry - the man her girls idolized - had already been gone two years. But this Christmas, he was supposed to come home and pick up where they had left off:

This story is not even the tip of the iceberg. Let’s talk about the disproportionate number of black men and women in prison because America chooses lock up as the main tool to sweep its social ills under the rug.

I'm in favor of legislation for DNA testing on behalf of previous and current victims of all crimes, it has been proven that most witness testimonies are inaccurate

ONLY $170,000 for 14 years in prison on a wrongful conviction?

Even with conclusive evidence proven by DNA analysis the victim STILL claims that Dean Cage was her attacker?

This smells of the famous 1931 Scottsboro case where even after it was proven that the charges were false, and that one of the alleged victims (Victoria Price) admitted they had lied, Ruby Bates still maintained that the NON-existant gang rape had occured.

How comfortable do folks here feel about someone being convicted solely on the accusations of the victim?

Well, it appears from the lack of response folks here are pretty comfortable about convicting someone on the basis of the victim's accusations.

The amount of false imprisonment in this country MAKES ME SICK!

Please donate as much as you can to the Innocence Project. As a nation, we cannot stand our corrupt judicial system ANOTHER DAY!

These are good, solid Americans who got caught up in a system which aggrandizes prosecutors, who will often do anything, including convict innocents, to enhance their work aspirations (politics anyone?).

THIS HAS TO END NOW!

There is no price to put on this kind of horror, but I can tell you the$ 170,000 they gave him for spending 14 years in jail for a rape he didn't commit is nowhere near enough.

No, it's not nearly enough.

Bless you Sir. There are MANY others in prison unjustly.
That is why I am STRONGLY against the death penalty.

I am against the death penalty for this reason as well. Some of these stories just rip your heart out.

And yet we wont put rich politicians and bankers in jail for the high crimes they DO commit. This country needs to clean house with a new revolution.

Well I hope they get A LOT of money for their family from the state! I bet she is glad she stuck by him! Poor man...prison (I have heard) is a horrible place. Thankfully he got out alive and in tact! And he is right they don't take lightly to rapists. YOu can kill, steal, and all types of stuff but don't rape and you had better not touch the babies or you can forget it! Happy he made it through this horrible ordeal!

I don't understand why we still allow eye witness testimony. Especially, when it's the only evidence, the case shouldn't be brought to trial.

Both sides in every criminal trial should have the same budget. It's not fair that an innocent person is just picked out by some "eye witness" and he is put on trial and must defend himself against the incredibly deep pockets of the government prosecutor.

Electing DAs is also a system that does not work. I'm not sure what the answer is - maybe being hired by the city manager or city council?

Wow, who woke up CNN to the fact that cases like this have been turning up for 20 years now.
