SALT LAKE CITY — The latest installment of a calendar series that pokes fun at Mormon stereotypes is putting a twist on motherhood.

The "Hot Mormon Muffins: A Taste of Motherhood" calendar features 12 mothers who claim membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in vintage pinup picture poses. Each month also has a muffin recipe.

It's a companion piece to "Men on a Mission," the three-year series of calendars that featured 12 male church missionaries who doffed their signature white shirts.

Last year, a dustup over the calendar ultimately cost its creator, Las Vegas entrepreneur Chad Hardy, his membership in the church and his diploma from the church-owned Brigham Young University.

Hardy said the projects are designed to shake up stereotypes that paint Mormons in general as stuffy or hyper-conservative and mothers in particular as homemakers from another era.

"For Mormons, the most holy calling next to missionary work is motherhood," said Hardy. "But they're not all the subservient housewives that people think they are."

Church spokeswoman Kim Farah declined to comment on the calendar Monday.

On paper, Miss May and cover model Tami Roberts seems like she might fit the stereotype.

A lifetime Mormon, the 35-year-old woman from Idaho Falls, Idaho, has been married 17 years to a Mormon man and has three daughters, ages 11, 9 and 4. The family attends church, and Roberts said she's raising her kids with Mormon values.

"I also want them to be open, accepting of other people, know that everybody is not the same and that it's OK to make your own choices," said Roberts, who works as a restaurant server and confessed to having a few tattoos, generally considered taboo among Mormons.

Roberts said her turn as a calendar model was an accident. Last year, she read news reports about Hardy and his disciplinary problems with the church and BYU.

"That made me mad, I did not agree with that," said Roberts, who applied for the job on a whim after she heard a women's version of the calendar was in the works.

She said the $15.95 calendar's pinup poses and slightly revealing outfits aren't in keeping with the message of modesty promoted by the church, but she's not ashamed of the pictures.

"The pictures are tasteful, and it's fun. I don't see why people can't have a sense of humor," she said. "I just don't think it's a big deal."

The women featured in the calendar range in age from 26 to 53. Some have as many as four children. Several are stay-at-home moms, while others are students, real estate agents, cosmetologists and dance instructors. One is a former Miss Utah and another is a breast cancer survivor, according to biographies on the calendar Web site.

Hardy and a business partner created the first "Men on a Mission" calendar for 2008. The 2009 version drew the attention of the church, and Hardy was excommunicated in July 2008 after a church court.

Hardy participated in graduation ceremonies at BYU in Provo a month later, but his diploma was withheld. He lost an appeal of the decision in March.

Leaders in Las Vegas and a dean of students at BYU said the calendar was not in keeping with the values espoused by the Mormon church.

Joseph Smith was called a prophet (Dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb)

There goes that kooky Joseph Smith.

You know, he claims he spoke with God and Jesus.

Well, how do you know he didn't? (Dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb)

He found the stones and golden plates (Dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb)

Even though nobody else ever saw them (Dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb)

What's this all about, Mr. Smith?

Mr. Harris, can you keep a secret?

Well, sure I can.

I have in my possession an ancient book written on gold plates that tells of Jesus Christ's second coming, here, in America.

In America, really? That sounds kind of…(Dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb)

Yes, they're "ironically" embracing repressive 1950s Stepford Wife culture.

Promotion in the Mormon Church is a little like promotion in the military--there is a strong conservative bias. That means the leaders tend to be very conservative. The lay members vary much more. They are supposed to be very conservative socially, and many are or put on that front, but many also only pay it varying degrees of lip service. The ones who openly vary too far are considered "bad Mormons," and if they drop out of the church altogether, they are called "Jack Mormons."

So the stereotypes mostly apply to the leaders. Among the lay Mormons you find closet gays, people having affairs, girls working as strippers, premarital sex, etc. Not to mention people who secretly have a little pepsi now and then. They are more conservative than average, but it's a matter of percentage, not kind. At least that was my impression growing up among Mormons, although not raised a Mormon myself.

Federal financial aid is available at "church owned" BYU. This is just wrong, wrong, wrong.

Silly me. I thought they spent millions to fight against the rights of others and had a history of stealing land and children from Native Americans.

C'mon people, do you really want to argue about who has the best imaginary friend again? It's all BS and since these weasels tried to ruin his life, I hope this new calendar makes him loads of money that he can donate to my religion: http://www.venganza.org/

As a life long Agnostic borderline Atheist I can say that every Mormon I have ever met (2 years living in Utah) have been sincere, hard working, honest and wonderful people. I wish I could say the same for some larger religions that I deal with in daily life.

I would second that. I grew up baptist but have been an atheist for the past 30 years, since my mid-teens. I'm quite happy normally making fun any irrational religion, but some of the nicest, most open people I've ever met were in Salt Lake City. It was kinda uncomfortable, actually; if asked about my religion, I'd kinda mumble "non-denominational" instead saying I don't believe in any religious crap, cause I wanted to be extra nice in return.

I wouldn't want to live there, though. Man, the beer selection sucked ass.

Speaking of beer in Utah...I was riding back on a bus with the beer I had purchased and got the nastiest looks I've ever received in my life. Great skiing out there though.

I don't understand how either of you can compare your experiences with the clear evidence to the contrary in the history of the Mormons and their recent campaign against equal rights for homosexuals.

Criticize the religion, not the people who claim to perpetuate it?

I expect this kind of talk from the religious but not from self-proclaimed agnotics/atheists.

I grew up in Utah as a gay Mormon (have since left the Mormon church and Utah). Many of the Mormons I have met are dispicable self-righteous hypocrits. However, many of the other Mormons I've met are among the most open minded, kind people I have known. Not all of them are anti-gay or against gay marriage. Many were and still are deeply offended by the Mormon churches support and financing of Prop 8 and alot of them spoke out publicly about it. You oversimplify.

The Mormons get singled out over Prop 8, when in fact it was a coalition of Catholic, Jewish, and various Protestant religions. I just came back to the LDS church after being away from it for over thirty years. I am liberal and I support gay marriage. I came back since Mormons are extraordinarily kind and caring people. I have found a very loving community. I never found that in the some of the other churches I joined along the way. Not all LDS members agreed with Prop 8 and in fact many of them stopped going to church in protest. It seems so easy to target a church that you really don't know anything about. By the way, when you find yourself in a severe drought and famine due to global warming you might be lucky enough to be living next to a Mormon family because they will have stored a two year supply of food and water.

I guess you would be right, if at least half the people posting here weren't saying how nice mormons are. You should get out of "comedy" and try one of the sections labeled "politics" "media" "living" "style" "green" or "world" if you would like to avoid these types of stories in the future.

Mormons are alcoholics, liars, embezzlers, and adulterers like everyone else—they just say they’re better; like all organized crime/religions they need to proliferate their community.
