Carol Bartz

PC World:

Bartz, known for her no-nonsense demeanor and spicy vocabulary, spoke with more vehemence than usual, labeling her company's 6 percent operating margin as "pathetic" and acknowledging Yahoo "somehow got boring" and confused users, clients and analysts about its mission.

Isn't she getting the big bucks to change that? She's bitching out loud because she failed? If I were in that situation, I think I'd probably just keep my mouth shut and tighten the straps on my golden parachute.

The beginning of the end was when Yahoo moved away from being a directory to being a "myStart page" model. All of a sudden it was following the herd of dozen competitors doing exactly the same thing. Every company website and personal webpage wants to be found. Yahoo should have been the leader and made that service better and more affordable. But, that is when they jumped the stark.

There's a fundamental question every business should be able to answer easily:

"How do we make money?"

I couldn't answer that question with regard to Yahoo! to save my life.

I went to the news page for the last time today.

Ads were all over the place. I dislike the format.

I stopped using Yahoo for anything but email a long time ago, and I wouldn't even use it for email except so many people know my Yahoo account, Gmail is much cleaner and better to use. For me part of it was how heavy the Yahoo portal became, it took a long time to load, it was over designed, not at all the nice clean light UI that the Google portal has. Also, a few times I tried using Yahoo's help for an account problem and i was constantly bounced back and forth between their help pages and the Pac Bell help pages. Neither one could answer my question.
