WASHINGTON — The Florida Democrat who said Republicans want sick people to "die quickly" is apologizing again for his inflammatory rhetoric, this time for insulting a senior Federal Reserve adviser using a derogatory term for women.

Amid growing criticism from across the political spectrum, Rep. Alan Grayson said late Tuesday it was inappropriate for him to call Fed adviser Linda Robertson a "K Street whore" during an interview last month on the "Alex Jones Show," a syndicated talk radio program.

Robertson is a former top Enron lobbyist and Clinton administration adviser who was hired by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke this summer to help with congressional relations as lawmakers are seeking more oversight of the agency. Washington's K Street is where many lobbyists have their offices.

"I offer my sincere apology," Grayson said in a statement, just hours after his spokesman defended his comments. "I did not intend to use a term that is often, and correctly, seen as disrespectful of women."

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), in turn, apologized for calling Grayson "one fry short of a Happy Meal."

"Alan Grayson is a friend and an extraordinary member of Congress. No obviously playful comment from me should distract from the important role Rep. Grayson has played in focusing on the true and tragic costs of our broken health care system," he said in a statement. "He is a leader and a patriot."

In the radio interview, Grayson took exception to Robertson's role, saying she was not qualified to criticize such efforts.

"Here I am the only member of Congress who actually worked as an economist, and this lobbyist, this K Street whore, is trying to teach me about economics," he said.

Erin Matson, a vice president at the National Organization for Women, called the slur "absolutely inappropriate."

"Would he have singled out a male lobbyist and said the same thing?" she said in an interview Tuesday.

Republican National Committee Co-Chairman Jan Larimer called on Grayson to apologize, saying the insult was "disgraceful" and "disrespectful to women."

But Grayson's spokesman, Todd Jurkowski, initially defended it, saying Robertson was a career lobbyist who "advocates for whatever she gets paid to promote."

A spokeswoman for the Federal Reserve declined to comment.

Grayson drew strong criticism last month for saying the GOP's health care plan amounted to wanting people to "die quickly" when they get sick.

He stood by the comments, leveraging the attention into a series of national television appearances in which he ridiculed Republicans as "knuckle-dragging Neanderthals." He boasted that the controversy has helped fill his campaign coffers.

Grayson did apologize for later likening the deaths of Americans without health coverage to a "holocaust." He then set up a Web site called "Names of the Dead," inviting people to list the names of loved ones who have died for lack of health care.

Oh, like we've all never thought that about lobbyists for the huge, wealthy corporations?

Of course not. No. Never. Who would ever think such a thing? Lobbyists are the Mother Teresas of representative government.

Mother Teresa was a cunning lobbyist, by the way. But her cause was for the most part good.

I like this guy but I fear he may have jumped the shark when when on Hardballl and described Cheney as a Vampire...I hope he can reign it in - he's good at getting the message out, he doesn't need all the theatrics.

Reletively benign name-calling is small potatos compared to the real danger to real folks Republicans and many Democrats infect on people everyday due to obedience to their corporate masters. So sometimes Grayson engages in a bit of politically incorrect verbage. Good for him. He's on the right side and he's a hero.

It is about time someone in Congress spoke truth to power.

Maybe he should have used the term to describe Bernanke.

Ms. Robertson, I've heard that prostitutes don't allow clients to kiss them. Have you ever been kissed by a client?

That's not true. It just costs more. Additional fees for additional services. Does make one wonder who would want to though.

Just because this guy's a Democrat does not mean that everything he does is forgivable. I can't believe he couldn't foresee the fallout from this well before the words left his mouth. To use that word when referring to a woman in a public interview just shows his lack of decorum. You can be outspoken and strong without having to apologize every other day. Example: Barney Frank. The drama surrounding Grayson is starting to get old.

To refer to women that way in any context is disrespectful and sexist.

If a woman is doing something evil and destructive to our nation, do we really need to worry about possibly sexist terminology?

He should have used the gender-neutral term of "prostitute".

Funny how sexual politics works - if the functionary had been male, no apology would have been necessary. Being that she was a she - it was deemed appropriate. I have no problem with girls wanting to mix it up with the boys - but I do have a problem when they want to have it both ways...

Ah, you must be an old-fashioned feminist: one who believes women should be given every possible opportunity to succeed. Those are the women I went to college with.

Today, groups like NOW exist to promote white, upper middle class women as victims who need protection. You've never heard a word from them about the women in many low-paid fields that actually have to have sex to keep their jobs. Maybe they can't afford the membership.

What do you think Bernanke, Geithner, and Summers are themselves? What type of service do they provide to the Financial Gangsters (Banksters, Stocksters, and Insurance Scammers)?

You are so correct

Why label the low-level former lobbyist, when you can label the real w*ores.

Grayson is guilty of one thing only which I don't see as a error but rather an attribute. He calls 'em the way he sees 'em. Wow, an honest politician with cajones! He doesn't need to apologize for anything.

I love this guy. Wish we had more like him.

If more guys told the truth about Republicans, and called them out on their un-American behavior and lies, the GOP would have a yard sale.

the rest of the democrats have battered partner syndrome.

The conservatives brow beat them democrats in to apologize anytime they speak up, and to show respect for the Conservative heroes, all the while vilifying liberal heroes.

it's sickening to watch.

"As an indie, I see Grayson as a radical. He says things I thought I would only hear out of Beck's mouth, just different talking points"

Apparently, you aren't paying much attention to either one of them...either that or you have difficulty with logic.

Beck is not just an irrational wing-nut. He's very clearly mentally unstable. Alan Grayson is neither of those things, and he's not at all radical. I'm a radical. Alan Grayson is a moderate who is simply fed up with the wing-nuts who are determined to destroy Americans to save America...for themselves.

Of course, if you don't understand that capitalism is as dead as communism because both were foolish religions designed to ruin people's lives for the benefit of a few, and if you believe that social and political moderation in American politics actually exists in some approximate middle ground between Democrats (moderate Progressives) and Republicans (rabid corporate ideologues) then I can understand why you would say that.

Well said,

Here's hoping the two party system would just own up that they are the Corporate Party with slightly differing social agenda wings. No difference that they both feed at the tough of big cash from big donors with small minds.
