Olbermann

NEW YORK — MSNBC is much less likely to start a third prime-time news show because its executives are pleased with how well a repeat of Keith Olbermann's "Countdown" is doing at 10 p.m. ET.

MSNBC chief executive Phil Griffin talked this year of actively searching for a new 10 p.m. host. Reruns of Olbermann's 8 p.m. show have aired there since March 2008.

Yet in October, Olbermann has averaged 600,000 viewers in that later time slot, nearly on par with Anderson Cooper's 689,000 on CNN, the Nielsen Co. said. In the 25-to-54 demographic, which MSNBC most actively courts, Olbermann's rerun beat Cooper's first-run show in that hour for the first time ever. Fox News Channel's Greta Van Susteren leads with just under 2 million total viewers.

Olbermann's rerun is getting nearly 60 percent of the audience that his first-run show does earlier in the evening, Nielsen said.

"We're looking, but nothing (new) has even come close to going in there at 10," Griffin said. "We've set the bar so high we don't want to break that success."

Continuing to air a rerun at that hour would save the news network millions of dollars.

October's news network ratings were similarly a boon to Fox News, locked in a battle with the Obama administration that has seemingly energized the network's fans. There was tougher news for CNN, whose play-it-straight goal is increasingly at odds with what viewers of these networks seem to want.

It's not as if CNN is unaware of the trends: its HLN (formerly Headline News) sister network has a prime-time lineup of opinionated personalities that has become competitive in the ratings with its big sibling.

CNN's troubles even brought about the unlikely event of agreement between Olbermann and his Fox nemesis, Bill O'Reilly. They both characterized the network as behind the times.

"CNN seems to still think it is the primary source for its viewers, that they know nothing until they tune in," Olbermann told The Associated Press. "This is, ever increasingly, nonsensical. People now watch news on TV for elucidation and context and analysis. They have brought the facts with them, the way we used to bring TV dinners."

O'Reilly, during an appearance last week at his alma mater, Boston University, cited CNN's "Campbell Brown" show as an example of an approach that no longer appears to be working. Brown has averaged 648,000 viewers this month in her 8 p.m. ET time slot, compared with O'Reilly's 3.39 million and Olbermann's 1.02 million at the same time, Nielsen said.

"You have to evolve if you want to survive in the commercial world," O'Reilly said, according to BU's Daily Free Press. "If you are going to do a straight newscast in prime-time, you are going to lose."

Brown said that embracing journalism that is nonpartisan and without bias "may not always be a ratings grab in prime time, but I am a journalist, and I believe in what I do and what CNN represents."

When CNN did wall to wall coverage of "Balloon Boy" a couple of weeks ago they officially jumped the shark.

I think Campbell Brown has a point. Hard news may no longer be popular, as O'Reilly yelling, and Olbermann's witicisms, but I'm not convinced that everyone is bringing the facts to the table, as Olbermann says. Where are they getting these facts from, the new york times, or other opinion driven bloggers? In world where conspiracy theories about climate change and Obama's birth certificate flourish, I worry that may segments of the population are tuning out of factual, credible sources of information altogether. Is science an outmoded concept as well? And if your sources of information, just become partisan pundits, then you end forming your opinions along party lines, rather than based on reality. Opinion driven journalism may be fun to watch, but it does not inform the public, and it helps keep the fire lit, for America's endless culture wars.

All the American news stations are "bubblegum" with the exception of PBS , and a few others.

CNN has about 5 stories and they repeat them over and over on the primetime slot. None of these stories give any in-depth analysis. Mostly talking heads makes for cheap news. Larry King is 90% show-biz talk. By the time Anderson comes on , the news is pretty old.

FOX is a propaganda machine for the Republicans and a disgrace to the journalism profession.

HNN --- 6 months of "Where is Kaylee ? " .. gimme a break.

ABC,CBS,NBC ... all have the same stories , a little more context than CNN , and more compact ,not enough controversy.

CNBC - the bankers friend

MSNBC - Rachael and Keith keep up the good work.

PBS - this is where to go if you are really serious about what is happening. Listen, pay attention , you will learn something.

The web , Blogs -- the only true free press in America . All the rest , except for PBS , get most of their Ad revenue from drug companies , which is why Swine Flu is 24/7 .

.

Olby's been let go by CNN, ESPN, FOX Sports, and MSNBC (first time around).

He has a personal enemies list. He's just trying to settle old scores. His viewers (both of you) should know better.

The headline and the story are completely different.

Olbermann did not compare CNN to TV dinners. The quote was - ''They (viewers) have brought the facts with them, the way we used to bring TV dinners."

There was a time, maybe still, when people brought their tv dinner to the tv and watched the evening news. He is saying the viewers bring the facts with them when they watch TV news - his quote was - "People now watch news on TV for elucidation and context and analysis"

Hard to judge Fox when HP won't even try to keep the facts straight.

That said, he is absolutely correct about the content format. People are not tuning in for the pure news, they know the news....they are tuning in for comment and entertainment. Fox is entertainment, so is Olbermann.

Keith takes himself so seriously, which, of course, is the entertainment part of his show....his elitist superiority complex, despite his obvious self loathing, is matched only by Lawrence O'Donnell. It's like riding a speeding train headed for gorge knowing that the bridge is out. You know this will not end well, but rather than shout warnings, you tell the engineer to push it up.

Nothing. Do you know what happened to people showing any SIGNS critical of Bush or daring to step outside the "free speech Zone" 2 miles away from Bush? Course all the charges were eventually dropped-he judges still reconginizing the Constitution even if the then president didnt, but they did NOT enjoy the jail time or the very real legal costs.

And lets see what happened to the people who showed up with GUNS at teabagger rallies sent by preachers who say they want Obama killed? Zero, zilch, -no interrogations. In short. YOU LIE!

UNLVGOP: Joy was right in what she said. Bush managed to get us into an illegal war and leave office with a huge debt....He just about destroyed this nation. So yea, you're talking apples and oranges. The Bush crime family should relocate to Saudi Arabia where they would be very welcomed.

CNN's format is boring! Why do most of the liberals folks they put on have to be soooo dry no charisma. Their morning news is awful so dull even the local news anchors make the morning news a lil more fun. I do feel that MSNBC sometimes give a lil too much satire, but CNN does not give nearly enough. Campbell Brown needs to be cut off.

The jokes on you if you're taking prime time news seriously. Sadly enough, there's more truth on the internet than you'll find on your tv.

While it's true that CNNs programming is schizophrenic, CNN is failing in the industry it created mainly because of Lou Dobbs. His show, at 7pm Eastern, sets the stage for the evening, but because he's such a snide, hateful bigot, it sours viewers like me on the whole network. I'd love to watch the news after I get home, feed the kids and oversee homework, but just cannot abide Dobbs' sneerings after a long day. Campbell Brown, wife of a Bush admin warmonger, isn't much better, and only comes across as reasonable because of her juxtaposition with Lou Dobb's denture-smacking, bad dye job nastiness.

If CNN really wanted to fill the objective news vacuum (and there IS a vacuum), not to mention drawing away scads of viewers who are choosing between the two other POV news networks, it would dump Lou post-haste, and either move Anderson Cooper in there or find a real, objective journalist to take his place. How hard can it be to find a smart, unbiased reporter to do an hour a day?

I do aggree, Ched. I also think that CNN should drop Brown and that they should do more in depth, investigative reports using real investigative journalists similar to what PBS's News Hour and 60 Minutes does.

They should also stop drawing false equivalences between opposing views when one side is obviously offering distortions and lies to push a political agenda.

Then they would actually have to know what they are talking about and really be experts and critical thinkers rather than script readers. Their "pundits" comments are predictable, their slant is repeated all day long and seldom do they have intelligent, thoughtful people on.

It's ok to have an opinion backed by facts, because the facts tend to lead the opinion. That's what smart people do, they come to opinions/conclusions based on facts. Keith often stretches his logic to ridiculous places for effect, but there is at least a logic to his conclusions, based on real and proven information, not rumors or fleeting conjecture.
